So, in the last week or so someone posted this rather interesting piece of news in the twitter thread:
www.businessinsider.com/nasa-telescope-detects-evidence-dark-matter-andromeda-galaxy-2017-2
And the devs reacted to it.
Now way back a couple of months ago when the first Andromeda Iniative briefings were being released I posited some skepiticism over us being able to detect anything in the Andromeda Galaxy. After all it is a really long way away from where I am sitting right now that the idea of detecting planets seemed....a bit absurd. But others pointed out that we can detect things from a great deal of distance away. And this article confirms it. If we can already detect anything in Andromeda roughly two hundred years before ME happens then it should be possible to detect planets in a certain amounts by the time we get to the events of the trilogy. At least enough to speculate onto their distance.
Now onto the theory.
As some people may or may not know back during the trilogy an idea was put out there the the end of Mass Effect 3 was supposed to be different and involve the use of dark energy. Now I know that there is some difference between Dark energy/ matter, but its still gotten me thinking about the implications for Andromeda. That, they could be bringing the dark energy plot back for Andromeda in some way shape or form. So the question is how? Well we know there is something in the Heleus Cluster which looks rather dark, and large, and rather ominious looking.
So this leads us back to the Andromeda Iniative, that they have detected a dark energy event somewhere in the Heleus Cluster of the Andromeda Galaxy and begin devising a way of getting there with the intention of investigating the anomoly as a possible solution from the Milky Ways Dark Energy problems. And we know from Tali's loyalty mission that dark energy was having a negative effect on the Milky Way Galaxy. It was making the Haestrom sun age faster then it should have. It was a cause for conern of both the Admiralty Board, and the corporations on Noveria, as per the side quest in ME 2 involving Parisini. So, with all this in mind the Andromeda Iniative is mounting an expedition. To try and solve their own problems by looking into the incident in Andromeda.
Knowing though that such an event, even though it is concerning to certain groups within the Milkyway, it is not an immediete concern...yet. Given the galactic time lines involved and given that this is only an issue for one star...so far...the AI probably figures they have time. For the timeline we are talking about a 600 year trip to the Andromeda Galaxy, or even a 1200 year round trip would be nothing. Bonus points for the AI might not have detected a similar anomoly within the Milky Way Galaxy. Hence Andromeda may be the only answer for them. They probably figure, with a large enough expedition, that they could go to Andromeda, investigate, come up with a solution, and return long before the issue becomes serious.
And they would want to keep this a secret from their own membership, given, that if they told them and if news got out it could start a panic. Seriously, tell some people our star will explode in a few billion years and people get nervous. So, they had to make up some bull shit reason for them to go there...ie gathering resources.
So this brings us to the actual events of the game. They get to the Andromeda Galaxy and they find the Kett, and the Remnant.
The Remnant dissapeared because of this event in the first place. Whatever this dark energy event in the center of the Cluster is the Remnant were either studying it, or trying to stop it from destroying the Heleus Cluster....and they failed...and hence all they have is AI. An AI which is programmed to stop this event from expanding at any cost. Fastforward thousands of years and this AI has woken up, now with the mandate of stopping this threat. It does so by stip mining planets to either look fro a solution, or as it gathers resources to try and build something which will contain the menace.
The Kett, unaware of the threat that Dark Energy Event poses, are nevertheless quite put out that something has recently started strip mining their planets. They know it has something to do with the Remnant, and then we show up, and are partially blamed by them. Which is what brings us into conflict, they think we are partially responsible for this event, while both sides are fighting each other, they are also similtaneously trying to work on a solution to their mutual problem.
And that is pretty much all I got...for now.
