So I found this interesting article through reddit that looks through 30 of the preview articles or videos released on the 23rd and lists some criticisms that seem to be shared among previewers. The article itself has a few (very light) spoilers. I just feel like this gives a pretty good idea of the overall feelings among previewers about what they played and saw.Edit: The table I had up before doesn't really accurately represent what the article says about these previews, so I removed it. I'd still recommend that people take a look at the article anyway as i think it's pretty interesting. I suppose I might be in the minority, but I think it's cool to see what some criticisms were and check the actual articles to see what people specifically felt about it. One thing to note is that virtually no criticism of the game was actually universal, in fact even the most widely talked about criticism (The facial animations) is mentioned by fewer than half of the previews. For pretty much anything here, you can find another article that feels differently, so take it all with a grain of salt. The article also mentions in a few cases that some of the criticisms mentioned were because of misunderstanding or misinformation on the part of reviewers.

A thread that takes numerous preview articles, most of which were very positive, and you only note criticisms—which you "feel like this gives a pretty good idea of the overall feelings among previewers about what they played and saw."
That makes perfect sense if you desperately need to convince yourself that other people hate something. For the rest of it, it's laughably inane.

Yeah what were the good aspects of the game? Well, the thread is only about the criticisms... which are not the whole picture, though.

Lets just forget that all the preview articles loved the game (apart from one article) and just focus on the small part of them which prove my point.

I'm sensing a lot of 8s and 9s across the board, maybe a few 10s here and there. I'm guessing 84-86 on Metacritic based on these previews, which is very good these days. It's not gonna beat out Horizon or especially Zelda, but it does sound to be shaping up to be one of the better games to come out this year.

half of that is bs and the OP left out the positives. Still believe the game is going to be great! I care about my own opinion. They played a freaking early build!

You are very correct, and I apologize for that wording. That said, my initial feeling was basically that the things noted were really the only issues that were consistently present. I was sort of taking it for granted (and the article says this) that anything not noted in that list was pretty much indicated to be good, or excellent in nearly every article.

Interestingly, none of those reviewers mentioned terrible AI. All my other criticism (cover system = wildlands cover system = garbage, empty/dull/static planets) seem to apply.

I would like to see more info about point 4 story/character. This is he only crucial point to make or fail MEA for me. The animation thing has blown way out of proportion.

The problem I have with this is that some of the criticisms mentioned are refuted by other groups that played the game. I know some people have stated how much they enjoyed the characters and that you can tell you are in for a fantastic Bioware story. A number of people have stated that they loved the combat and thought it was very enjoyable, as well as some who have stated that the worlds feel very full and assuredly not devoid of content. I could try to go through all of the reviews I have read in the last two days and find the specific reviewers who stated this, but I'm not going to at this point because I assume other people have also read through them as well. The point is, taking these as for sure issues with the game is silly. They are opinions. A lot stated issues with facial animations, so that's probably an actual issue, but for the others I think they are mostly just opinion, which is fine, but since we don't have a list of praises this just seems to paint the game in a negative way when from what I read it was almost universal praised as a game with the issues not detracting from the reviewer's fun.

In terms of story, the previews only got to sample the into of the game, and some dialogue with the crew on the Tempest. But in terms of main story beats that's it. So I think that's worth mentioning.

I feel like a lot of the criticisms are simply the symptom of the limited time they had to play the game. I expect the animations to be garbage, so all the complaints about that aren't a surprise to me. Hopefully most of the bugs are gone from the final release. There was a lot of conflicting statements about the characters and about the quality of the open worlds, so that's something we'll have to see when the game actually comes out I guess.

I guess this is helpful, but still...
About as useful as a collection of only positive opinions about the game. Useful if you want to make yourself feel good about that pre-order, useless for everyone else.
Edit: I take that back. I actually looked at the accompanying article, which was thoughtfully written. I'm guessing the people here boo-hooing it didn't bother.

The list is useful if you keep in mind it is what it is; that being a list of exclusively negative opinions.
The only one that really concerns me is the unremarkable story/characters which apparently five outlets mentioned. This is bread and butter for a Bioware game, and why I'm a fan. And I think it's the most important aspect for them to nail.
Regardless, this game could score in the 70s on metacritic and I'd still get it no question. I've yet to be disappointed overall with a Bioware game, so they haven't even used up their mulligan yet!

Much depends on your view of the world. The proportion of the previewers ('reviewer' implies too much) that raised specific concerns were: - 47% - Facial Animation problems
- 23% - Cover problems
- 17% - Buggy
- 17% - Story/characters unremarkable
- 13% - Open world too empty
- 10% - Combat unremarkable
- 3% - Unremarkable graphics
- 3% - The Tempest is unremarkable
- 3% - Lack of innovation
If the biggest issue is that Sara looks derpy 10% of the time, I can deal with that.

All the previews tell me in their average impression is that this is going to be an average game unless the context of the story takes it beyond that.
Considering the "more lighthearted tone" though and BioWare's recent efforts I don't think anyone should expect this to be some kind of return to form of the series as they used to like it. Not for ME1 fans at least despite the game harkening back a lot. It'll probably be a better "game" than ME3 because it allows more player-control but aside from that I'm not expecting anything that makes me drop my jaw like how ME1 and ME2 could make me. BioWare's games have gotten too friendly and casual.

What is wrong with casual Well, let's see, the only one thing wrong with casual is that they are forcing me to be one, which was not the case with ME1-2 and DAO-DA2 and older BW games. Nothing against it personally, still this is not why I play BioWare games... I still hope that second part of the game and main story will be much better than what those ''prewievers'' have seen

So /shrug Also I really think you're just seeing what you want to see. Impressions have ranged from moderately positive to very positive, some have been glowing. I don't know what you're talking about calling them "average" impressions.

Clickbait article. If the journalist made those claims about the Secret IP , yes that article would work because it's more or less what is happening. The new IP is about "experience" and doing something brand new with your friends. MEA is still marketed as a story heavy RPGs , call back to ME1 (a game where you talked and talked and talked) , comparison to Witcher 3 and DAI , also romances, companions and all of that.
