Hope you are right and I am wrong. Can't say I am happy with where the combat is leading too. Far to fast paced for my liking and no more pause! Don't get me wrong Andromeda is getting a new paint job and I'm unimpressed. One French review said it looks and sounds like a cleaner, younger Mass Effect , with lots of witty one liners that will make you cringe. They are catering to a younger audience for sure, but the article is all about ME going Destiny or whatever , and I don't think this is what is happening there at all. This is what Bioware say they are going to do with their new IP though.

A thread that takes numerous preview articles, most of which were very positive, and you only note criticisms—which you "feel like this gives a pretty good idea of the overall feelings among previewers about what they played and saw." That makes perfect sense if you desperately need to convince yourself that other people hate something. For the rest of it, it's laughably inane. >complains about ME:A critics acting like toxic sociopaths >acts like a toxic sociopath defending ME:A from criticism

I'm not gonna lie and say I don't have concerns or reservations (still preordering, so suck it ), but how much stock can you really put into these reviews when they spent a mere couple hours on an older build of the game (not really sure I understand why Bio would give them an old version to play.) I was on the fence until seeing the latest two combat trailers. Worst case for me I play through the SP once for the story and follow that up with a few hundred hours in MP.

I'm sensing a lot of 8s and 9s across the board, maybe a few 10s here and there. I'm guessing 84-86 on Metacritic based on these previews, which is very good these days. It's not gonna beat out Horizon or especially Zelda, but it does sound to be shaping up to be one of the better games to come out this year. I don't think Horizon's character development will be better than Andromeda but graphically wise Horizon is better obviously.

All the previews tell me in their average impression is that this is going to be an average game unless the context of the story takes it beyond that. Considering the "more lighthearted tone" though and BioWare's recent efforts I don't think anyone should expect this to be some kind of return to form of the series as they used to like it. Not for ME1 fans at least despite the game harkening back a lot. It'll probably be a better "game" than ME3 because it allows more player-control but aside from that I'm not expecting anything that makes me drop my jaw like how ME1 and ME2 could make me. BioWare's games have gotten too friendly and casual. ME1 is my 2nd favorite game of all time and I really enjoyed DA:I, and I love what I see from ME:A. So /shrug Also I really think you're just seeing what you want to see. Impressions have ranged from moderately positive to very positive, some have been glowing. I don't know what you're talking about calling them "average" impressions. In video game reviews, "glowing" is "average" i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/417/486/0e0.gif

Good, positive, negative; critical preview from a PC-oriented outlet. Only thing that sucks is that the guy who played it is ignorant of DA:I - he hasn't played it so he doesn't get the comparison because he assumes ME:A's "open-world" elements is compared to a game that's similar to DA:O.
I'm pretty bummed about the story-details. It has the same trappings as DA:I where combat supercedes everything. Too many encounters that would've been multiple-choice in a game like KOTOR default to "Let's just shoot things". The plot has the "you're the special hero" like we never saw that coming, but still. I thought BioWare wanted to tell the story of "a new guy becoming the hero" but if they start off the story by branding us as "special" they're already making destiny play its part and decide where the hero... just because. The cause & effect is cheapened right away. It's as if BioWare has some top-level rules they apply to every game that always involve this element. They really need to go away from this and they shouldn't be afraid to end up with another Hawke.
Good thing is that side-quests sound good.

Yeah what were the good aspects of the game? Well, the thread is only about the criticisms... which are not the whole picture, though. I wrote the piece--my interest was simply to look at what was criticized (finding positivity doesn't require any work)--I had no idea people would take that as some sort of attack *by me* on the game. I was curious if there were commonalities in what was criticized (most of which, as I point out in the article, was on the technical side). Regardless, I've included a header to make the intent as clear as possible--obviously no one *should* read it if they don't want to see this kind of content.

BioWare's games have gotten too friendly and casual. I know what you mean by "casual" but I don't think that is really the word that describes it best. I think "vanilla" maybe says it. Or at least with combat, "mindless", "rote". I don't know but something about the frostbite engine, I can't place my finger on, it seems to take the soul out of the game. Yes, the engine, I know what people are thinking, but the universe and combat has to exist within frostbite and, I don't know I just haven't been able to pin it down. I see the engine as limiting not expanding. Weird, I know.

I would like to see more info about point 4 story/character. This is he only crucial point to make or fail MEA for me. The animation thing has blown way out of proportion. Its like that for every BW game...

Well I have faith that the character stories will be great. The main story on the other hand has always been more about the moments than some glorious overarching narrative.

I will never understand the mindset that believes ME1 to be the pinnacle of the series. A great opening sure, but one that showed it's age even when it's sequel was in development.
I can see this game blowing Zero Dawn away or I can see it being considered a comparable experience. The problem is the games are two vastly different narratives with two different sorts of gameplay experience. The only thing they share in common is an "open-world" of which MEA seems the superior of the two.

Much depends on your view of the world. The proportion of the previewers ('reviewer' implies too much) that raised specific concerns were: - 47% - Facial Animation problems
- 23% - Cover problems
- 17% - Buggy
- 17% - Story/characters unremarkable
- 13% - Open world too empty
- 10% - Combat unremarkable
- 3% - Unremarkable graphics
- 3% - The Tempest is unremarkable
- 3% - Lack of innovation
If the biggest issue is that Sara looks derpy 10% of the time, I can deal with that.
It wouldn't be a Mass Effect game without a derpy protagonist anyways.
