Someone finally started a thread about this? I've been posting off and on about this since around December.
They certainly bear some striking similarities. I'd not be surprised, either way.

To me this is like asking if Asari and Humans are the same species, or if one is a sub-species of the other. After all, Asari have a striking resemblance to Human females.
We'll know in a few weeks, but as the incredibly cliché saying goes, you can't always judge a book by it's cover.

They look the same in the sense they're humanoid aliens built to fit on the same rig of the other humanoid aliens and modified to not look so human.
I don't think they're related.

Asari were intentionally designed to be blue space babes. Why design kett and angara to look alike, though? Was it unintentional? Coincidental? Or, are they related? We'll know pretty damn soon. Its hard to believe this game is weeks away, given the non-existent marketing campaign. It's been a strange ride.

Maybe, but I think it's more that their body shape is just a common evolutionary theme in Andromeda, like how many of the MW species have three fingers and digitigrade legs.

A lot of that had to do with development costs though.... Like I remember watching a Dev video about garrus's creation in the OT as a whole. At some point there was a remark made about how the artists were limited to doing something that fits on a human structure rig (comment wasn't garrus specific if I remember right) due to combat gameplay reasons.

Well, yes. I'm guessing the new alien species probably share the same animation rig to save on time and memory, but it's so much more fun to invent in-story rationalizations for their similar appearances.

We'll know in a few weeks, but as the incredibly cliché saying goes, you can't always judge a book by it's cover. But the asari were specifically designed to be basically blue humans females. When creating the kett and angara, two brand new alien races, why would they try to make them look similar and not completely different? Answer is either laziness or they're related.

Who knows, for all we know they could be related to the protheans as well. I mean seriously, when i look the kett design it seems like if someone simply took Javik, plastered some concrete all over him, removed the other pair of eyes, and voila, you get kett. Talk about lazy design. Look at the head shape, the body shape.

Your imagination isn't running wild. They're not the same species even though they look almost identical. The people who made the game are lazy, useless and completely incompetent because they don't know how to create a brand new race from scratch. That takes creativity and talent and the people who made this game do not possess either of those qualities. That's what you're seeing in this game - lazy, shoddy work, re-skinned versions of previous races. Very little thought has gone into it. As you can see, they've made all the aliens look humanoid apart from just three species, and those humanoid races all look almost identical with very minor differences. They're all re-skinned versions modelled on humans. So no, your imagination isn't wild. The visuals in this game are simply horrible, created with no creativity and no originality.

I really hope there is something story wise that justifies we only have humanoid sentient species in Andromeda (either coming from the MW or from Andromeda). The art book explained it.

The art book explained it. I read "we want humanoid faces and shapes for the players to empathize with the new species" or something like that. I liked that moment in ME1 when I try to empathize with the Rachni, despite my first impression of the species. I hoped for moments like that in MEA. Instead, we have remnants that look like drones or metal gears, varrens/dogs and big gorillas. And one of the sentient species have a cat face and two have the usual Mass Effect leg shapes. I really hope the writing is stellar for the two new species, because so far it's uninspired and uninspiring. What was the point of going in Andromeda if it's to experience how everything look the same, and how small the universe is? It's not the size of our galaxy, so they are most likely planning to expand it with each new game. They called MEA a saga, and implied we might not even play as Ryder again. So it's more like DA now possibly.

I think this game is sort of a test after the trilogy ended 5 years. ME1 was an introduction, but MEA is sort of a callback with new things added. Making it too big and then having it suddenly fail would be pretty bad.

From what I know, even from the artbook scans, it's pretty bland so far. Looks apart, writing need to be very, very good then, or to evolve in a very surprising way, especially angaran and khet cultures. They don't have to make it "big". But going to Andromeda to see, well, "familiar" faces and facial expressions, that's not what I expected nor wanted. Definitely a big missed opportunity for me, considering they have two new species to deal with. It seems that's the plan, so we'll have to play the game to find out, but I am feeling pretty confident from the many things I've read so far about the story, relationships and quests. Also culture is going to be talked about a lot it seems.
