Not sure if this is old news ur-late-mate but I was watching RPG Site's video impressions on YouTube and it's the first time I hear confirmation that Alec is fighting alongside Ryders and uses some of Shepard's classic powers during combat:
Wonder if perhaps he laters appears in the squad again for some time or even rejoins permanently, would deffo fit under super secret 7th squadmate they wouldn't reveal before release

I severely doubt Alec would work under his inexperienced son/daughter.
What is possible that Alec will be an allied NPC fighting along side you. And if he is a temporarily squadmate, he'll remain temporarily.

Didn't feel weird since he was the one constantly issuing tips, orders and tutorial dialogue. |

I think it's less that temporary squadmates die and more that because they die they can't continue to be squadmates. Kaidan/Ashley could potentially be "temporary" squadmates in ME3. Depends on your choices. Nyreen Kantros does die but Aria T'Loak doesn't.

Anderson didn't die during the prologue so it's not set in stone that they have to die right away, but you know it's coming.
I think regarding Alec it's possible that he and his team lead their own scientific mission to investigate the scourge and they end-up getting captured by the Kett who they find out are responsible for spreading it. The Kett hold them hostage to interrogate / perform experiments on them to find out more about us.
The Kett storyline starts out as a rescue-mission to give it more of a personal element and of course it goes badly because according to the logic of the story Alec must die in order for Scott/Sarah to maintain their position as the Pathfinder. Simple and predictable but this is BioWare we're talking about here.

They changed the formula in ME3 where the character don't die at the beginning, but the end.
I don't see why they wouldn't bother to change again.
