Recently, IGN released the very first 13 minutes of Mass Effect Andromeda. I didn't watch all of it so that the whole thing doesn't get spoiled, but what I did notice is how conversations will work. We've had reports, but now we officially see it in action.
As you may know, Paragon and Renegade are now gone. In Andromeda, conversations are now based on agreeing and disagreeing with people, as well as four main emotions.
- Emotional [Heart] - Logical [Gear] - Casual [round swirl] - Professional [square swirl]
You'll of course still have an arrow pattern to symbolize moving the conversation forward, and question marks for investigation, and I'm assuming that flirting doesn't have a symbol itself like DA:I, so either the game will use a SWTOR method by labeling a conversation piece as a flirt (for example: [flirt] insert phrase here) or they won't be a "flirt" option and romances will build based entirely on what you say, agree with, and tones you use.
Judging from the main tones, I'm probably going to refrain from using Professional, because I want my Ryder to be more excitable, young, fresh, curious, and excited to explore a new galaxy.
Also, after hearing the male Ryder and female Ryder side by side, I'm probably changing my mind about playing as a guy for Andromeda. I might instead play as Sara Ryder instead, which I guess makes a bit of sense seeing as I usually play male Shepard in the original trilogy because I felt that story fit male Shepard a bit better.
Let me put it this way, the original trilogy is like an homage to classic sci-fi epics and famous war films. Andromeda is a fresh new start with an emphasis on discovery and exploration. I personally found Sara's voice actor fits the whole younger, eager explorer vibe more than the male version.
That's just my opinion though. What do you guys think? Which Ryder would you play as, and how do you envision his or her personality?

If I'm not mistaken there was a tweet that was like you can romance using the different tones. So like logical flirt, professional flirt, etc.
As for me, I am definitely going Casual (Might I suggest having a poll?)! Casual is just too cheeky! I love it! I considered emotional, but based on the 13 minute vid...eeh, a little too whiny for me. So for the top half, I'm going Logical, bottom half Casual

My general response to everything that moves, and even most things that don't move: Actually I haven't decided how I'll play things out. I might just roll with the more inexperienced young recruit thing and do a more excitable and casual character.

The game will be new and shiney.....with no idea of how my character will evolve, I'll just roll with it. On a side note. May I just say that, everytime I see you post, I read it in Kasumi's voice.

Im loving the male Ryder voice, Tom Taylorson was a great fit. Not to mention he's an awesome guy in general. I'll probably play him as a mostly casual guy outside of serious situations, then I'll likely go for the more professional route.
That all being said, I might change my mind entirely depending on the situation.

First off, that 13 min video was finally something reassuring as was the exploration video. It was such a relief to see the dialogue system in play and I love how it has more of an ME1 feel with choices being aligned on the left and right whenever there's only two.
I'll play however I want. My first playthrough is never roleplay. Male Ryder also looked good enough that I'll play as him and create my own face. Can't wait to see what Sara and Daddy end up looking like when I've tweaked both Ryders.

I'm not sure yet. I'll probably mix it up a bit.
But rather than winging it completely in RPGs, I quite like defining a little backstory for likes and dislikes. Tricky with ME, as the characters' history is largely defined, but can be done in ways to not mess with story too much.
If I go with FemRyder, I might decide that my brother really winds me up. So I can be super polite and professional with most other crew but totally go off on one with him for no good reason. The more stressful the circumstance, the more likely I am to treat him like crap.
I'll certainly decide on some personality types and political leanings I'm more inclined to help or oppose.
Always fancied playing a total racist too. ie. Pick out one I really hate and give them crap. But can't quite bring myself to do it even in a game.

If "professional" voice is anything like Bounty Hunter in SWTOR, I'd prefer that.

If "professional" voice is anything like Bounty Hunter in SWTOR, I'd prefer that. Going by my tendencies in the trilogy professionalism or "neutral" was my most often used tone. I love playing as a Shepard who keeps a clear head and stays impartial until it becomes too personal for him or it is the smart thing to do. I do wonder since it seems a lot of wheels will not have all 4 tones available, if we're sometimes forced into being emotional about something we aren't though. Obviously we have to be if it has to do with Daddy or our sister or a lover so that would make sense because we are still playing as Ryder and not 100% outselves, but I hope the tone system won't lead to any "Kai Leng" moments.

I'll have to say i'll have to see what the tones mean in practice. I have no problem with Paragon/Renegade/Neutral being gone just as long as there's real sense of breadth to the choices. On paper logical/professional seem to be tripping over eachother in my head which isn't a good thing. Hopefully one of them will be colder/darker pragmatism that we sometimes saw with Renegade will be closer to neutral.

I got the feeling I'll play Scott as casual and emotional with friends and peers in a casual setting, mixed with professional while on a mission; professional with NPCs that outrank him (like the captain); professional and cold with hard-ass military dad (because it just reeks of that kind of upbringing). In reality it'll take at least one playthrough to get a real hang of who I eventually want my personal canon character to be. But I like how you can seemingly be multi-faceted to different people more than Shepard in her trilogy (and not unlike Hawke in DA2).

Do you guys know if there is just one voice for the Ryder, as in actual voice, or if they have a couple of pitch up/down versions depending on which guy/gal you chose?

I'm going to assume it's just one voice like the ME trilogy as BioWare has not spoken on this topic at all, to my knowledge. DAI was a special exception to the rule due to having multiple races.

As always it depends on situation and character.
My bro is going to be a military man with a chip on his shoulder yet one who gets along well with his crew. So a mix of professional logical and casual.
White my fem is going to be an alenkoesque starry eyed dreamer. So emotional casual.

Although, I think the pitch of the voice was tied to body type in SWTOR? There wasn't an actual slider to change your voice. The obvious issue with having two male voices and two female voices is it's a lot of extra development cost. BioWare generally does a good job of picking quality voices, so I'm not too worried about it.

I did not expect one per class, but I was really happy to see two choices per gender in DA:I, so I hoped to see the same in ME:A. Ah, I see. As I said, that only happened in DAI because it would have been incredibly awkward to have one voice for human, elf, dwarf, and qunari. It's nice having multiple voices, but at the same time it shrinks BioWare's budget and limits them from doing other things in the game. I think a better compromise would be some sort of pitch bar, to slightly alter the tone of the voice. It certainly seems far more feasible than just paying multiple actors to voice thousands of lines of dialogue. I don't believe that's happening in this game though.
