As long as I'm not attacked by trash mobs every three meters and have another one spawn right on top of me I'll call that an improvement. That was my favorite part of Inquisition!

ME1 looks bland because it's an old game. The just didn't have the tech back than to make vast worlds look really interesting. There are RPGs older than ME that manage to have vegetation and moving grass. Hell, the Jak & Daxter games near the turn of the millennium had large seamless open areas with much more visual interest. The technology existed to have more than textured ground. The technology also did not force them to make the worlds boring to play in, with almost nothing of interest gameplay-wise. It's fine, the joy in ME1 came from all the other things. EDIT: Also, I keep seeing people say "Empty spaces make sense" as if believability and logic equate to fun game design. They do not. Yes, it would make sense for uncharted worlds to be largely empty. That doesn't mean it will be fun, or a better design choice than smaller areas with denser points of interest. Not saying that it can't be large, sparsely populated, and fun, just that people should not use "logic" as a justification for boring game design if it does in fact turn out to be boring. A game should be fun first, and logical second. Or third or whatever. The problem wasn't the tech, it was money and time. Mass Effects production was a mess (they rehauled the entire combat system a couple of months before launch) and very inefficient. The devs made a presentation on their refined production cycle for ME2 during a GDC (not sure which). (ME2 didn't feature vehicle exploration due to money/time constraints). I'm also not opposed to ME1 style vehicle exploration but in good. Because even then they did some (very few) nice things. The nomad certainly looks like it handles better than the Mako ever did. Also I think this is a thing where they can't make everyone happy. Because you have people complaining either way: "too big", "not enough interesting stuff to do" on the one side and "unrealistically dense", "immersion breaking", etc. on the other. I personally think having relatively large patches of nice to look at, but empty space, you have to traverse is better than having that same area littered with stupid collectibles nobody cares about (Ubisoft style).

Bioware takes his concerns seriously. When DAI released the FC map where you could fight dragons. Wavebend got carried hard by his promotionscrub friends for a good 12 hrs straight. Then posts that getting the new gear was way to easy. A couple of days later they nerf the drop rate so hard that even after playing hundreds of rounds. You might never see that last gear piece drop. I hope and pray that Wavebend never actually plays this game let alone comment any more than he has. Yes, yes he is. "Oh a desert planet that has huge wide open spaces with nothing in it. That doesnt fit with how the real world actually works." - wavebend's train of thought. Go to any desert here on earth and you will see hardly anything there. Especially in the Middle East. Nothing but sand dunes as far as the eye can see. Yet Wavebend wants bioware to create something totally unrealistic.

I will be sad if there are no Shai-hulud to be found on any desert planets.

Game about establishing new colonies on new uninhabited worlds.
OP bitches about it being an uninhabited world.
U serious bro? You've been able to explore only one planet in the trial....
EDIT: Note to self, ignore all of wavebend's posts

Alright here's a video of an MMO who make fucking gorgeous environments.
As you can see deserts tend to be vast and empty but that doesn't mean they're bad. The funny thing is that desert is still better than the entire planet Hoth from SWTOR. From what I've seen of Eos they nailed it.

Ok so they go to a distant galaxy with the goal of not triggering the locals. They pick their golden worlds like due to their LACK of locals. My guess, it is highly logical that they would be inhabited and would be kind of barren aside from nature.
However, it would be cool if some of the planets we visited had civilization of some sort, some kind of advanced civilization or cultures.
But yeah, prerequisite would seem to be empty worlds else you might piss of them locals. Rule number 1. Don't piss off locals when possible.

EDIT: Note to self, ignore all of wavebend's posts that is no excuse, the worlds could have something, rivers, waterfalls, wild life, little or big animals, birds, plants insects, etc, there must be some echosystem, environment to set up sustainable colonies, besides, it's a game, it should be fun and/or interesting to see/play
