Looking back at the trilogy, I had a preference for my team composition. I used those characters over 60% of the game and the remaining percent used other squad member for variety.
Leaving romance options and loyalty missions aside, is it possible to start and end the game with only Cora, the Krogan and the new Helius alien?
In other words can we use the same 3-4 chars (plus Ryder) to play and finish this game?
Note: I'm also assuming there is no game imperative that forces me to use the other characters.

I played ME-1 (in one of my play-throughs) as a FemShep soldier with only Ashley and Tali as my companions everywhere I went. We kicked butt everywhere, plus I never missed out on cracking every bypass. I just wanted to see what an all-girl team could do. I enjoyed it very much. In my current ME-2 play-through, my FemShep soldier takes Miranda (love her Overload and Warp!) and Kasumi nearly everywhere, and we smash through battles very quickly. I haven't played ME-3 yet. It's on my 'September to October' bucket list. Not sure yet on my go-to squadmates. Looking forward to it.

You can in ME3.
James, Liara and edi. Even though the game starts with Ashley/Kaidan, they miss out on about half of it and can be sent to Hackett or die during the coup mission.
I wouldn't have a problem if the starting squadmates are the only ones to finish with.

Ok, I misunderstood the purpose of this thread... I was expecting a discussion about our squadmates' preferred artistic styles... So, not this kind of minimalist?

Yeah... I did the same thing with DA:O and DA:2. I could take Morrigan and Leliana everywhere, But I really missed the banter between Morrigan and Alistair. So, Leliana was out just because of the banter.
With new companions in ME:A, I'm hoping for engaging banter between characters that will be tough to choose which one to drop. This means multiple playthroughs... just for the banter.

They also have some cool unique dialogue on certain missions (talking about their respective military families, killing robots together etc). In ME3, you should make a beeline through the "Priority" missions to Citadel:II/ Perseus Veil and ignore most others at first, so you can get them within a few hours instead of halfway through the goddamn game.

I do have a bad habit of defaulting to Tali and Garrus.
I try to shake it up, but I tend to pick a smaller team of regulars for each game... Having the option to pull it off with the bare minimum could be cool, I guess.

You know that was easily one of my favorite things about the original Mass Effect. You could get your full squad pretty damn immediately. You got the initial stint on the Citadel getting you all but Liara then do Liara mission and boom, you got everyone. Meaning like your saying you could be like 'ok this play through its Wrex and Liara' and you can do that for the bulk of the game.
That's something I prefer doing, honestly, making a character and picking 2 squadies they'll use the bulk of the time as the main group. ME2/3 put a bit of a wrench in that with having some of the squadies showing up in the later half of the game. Really REALLY didn't enjoy that part about them. I know that was pretty much exclusively due to both pacing and having to split it up due to 360 DVD limitation.
So, anyway, here's hoping? I'd definitely prefer it if the bulk of the squadies, if not all of them, are available early on so I can do near full playthroughs with my preferred members for certain playthroughs. Getting Tali late game was just a bummer in ME2/3 hoping for not a repeat on that.

I also like small teams.
Liara and Wrex in ME1 occasionally Garrus and Tali Garrus and Tali in ME2 pretty much everywhere. I don't like ME2 squadmates Liara and Garrus in ME3 occasionally Tali (when Geths are around) and Javik (for Protehean related stuff).
My best team is Liara and Wrex the biotics of the Asari and the brute force of the Krogan.

The more devastating combos for me was Liara+Javik and Javik+James.
Its great but i miss the banter as stated above.

It really depends if I feel a squadmate has a very important reason to be on the mission then yes banter is important. Javik is a must be for me on Thessia. I bring up Garrus always on Turians related missions or Tali on Geths ones. If the mission feels neutral then I bring the squadmembers I like the most. If I don't like a squadmember I don't even have any interest in hearing their stories. Pretty much all ME2 guys are a big meh for me.
