The Remnant were wiped out trying to solve the 'problem' of the thing in the center of the galaxy which may or may not go through their own cycles...I actually like the idea that the thing goes through cycles it fits into my theory rather nicely. So the Remnant dissapeared but the left behind their technological construct (similar to the Catalyst) to solve the problem when it again starts becoming an issue. The Remant AIs only mandate is to solve the problem of the 'black hole' at the center because that black hole has the potential to wipe out all life within the Heleus Cluster, and maybe even beyond. So to do that it strip mines all the planets in the region or as many as it feels neccessary looking for a solution, and trying to gather enough resources to execute the solution.

One guy on youtube(Hotnotmeh) had this nice theory. What if the remnant were originally a species from a planet that is hostile to most life, like a volcanic world or something, and they made and programmed this technology to terraform planets in the galaxy to their liking, but then something happened to them, and now their machines just continue doing it mindlessly after theyve gone, hence we have the "Scourge" seemingly changing planets. The story might involve us finding the source of stopping the scourge in this part of the galaxy, thus saving the planets were about to colonize.

Kinda hard to discuss theories without a certain specific spoiler that's already been outed in previews

Well then, I say it's possible they may originate from Milky Way (or their creators) considering the... details of that 1 spoiler

This would actually give the kett a motive too. What if they named the phenomenon the "scourge", and the reason they are invading is the same reason we are, looking for new worlds, because the scourge is taking out their already established worlds, In effect they are running away from it.
Actually given that we have a Halo 4 writer for the game, there could be several things we have already seen in that game, unfortunately repeated here a little differently (halo 4 spoilers ahead):
- the kett are a highly religious (like the covenant), they are lead by archon (the prophet of truth) - the kett think the remnant(forerunner) tech is sacred, but they dont know its actual purpose, in this games case that it is actually whats causing the scourge. - the kett are running away from the scourge, like ancient humans were escaping from the flood and invaded forerunner space(in our case its Heleus cluster)
I mean Halo 5 already kinda used the ME3 control ending like stuff, with huge machines forcing peace in the galaxy with a seemingly benevolent AI in charge, and the created rebelling against their creators that whole shebang.
Could it really be we get these similar plots again, this time reversely?

So we see another ancient race in Andromeda, the remnants, or at least whats left of them maybe, their robots. So put up theories here about the remnant, who were they, what did they do, where did they go? I have some theories of my own 1. The remnant left the galaxy, leaving behind their guardians to watch over species. Maybe their vaults is a test of sorts, prize for a species in technological gifts, that proves their worth by beating their guardians/puzzles. Or their robots are new way of keeping "balance" in the galaxy, ie reapers that are different reapers. 2. The remnants were wiped out by their synthetic creations, what we see is all that is left. 3. The remnants became those synthetic creations, ascending flesh. 4. The true remnants are hiding somewhere, maybe observing and supervising, wizard behind the curtain, that sort of stuff. 5. They're protheans who escaped the Milky Way 50,000 years ago and their intergalactic spacecraft technology, the designs for which were left behind in the Milky Way for primitives to find on a certain red planet, serves as the basis for the technology used by the Andromeda Initiative to reach Andromeda.

take a seat.
the black hole, or mass eezo structure, at the center of Helius Cluster is actually a cloak and shield for the 'ascended'. the ascended had previously relied on synthetics, powered by the eezo black hole, to build solar systems which sustain complex life (terraforming a solar system vs a planet), and when they evolved passed that reliance, they left them where they were. these are the remnants and the scourge (the scourge is the solar-system terraforming remnant technology corrupted to produce chaotic solar systems/planets instead of habitable ones). the ascended retreated into their blackhole structure, untouchable to any species incapable of travel within a ****ing black hole *****, to sustain their massive, possibly near-limitless and immortal, civilization.
edit: what was the spoiler Petroshenko was talking about?
