Emotional just sounds kind of childish to me. I don't see my Ryder as being an "emo". I see myself using a decent amount of every dialogue choice except that one.

I wonder if there will be people uploading full length 'let's plays', in which they demonstrate exclusive usage of just one type of response through the whole game.

Depends on the VA for the main character. If s/he can deliver the charged lines well, i would use it when talking to the characters I care about. If it's cheesy, I won't.

Can't afford to have emotions when you have to massacre a truckload of sentient lifeforms every day.
That's what my Ryder would tell Dr. Lexi

I was gonna use it, TBH, but based on the 13 minute IGN into it seems too whiny for me.

I tend to find attempts to distance oneself from emotion to be the more childlike impulse. Surely you can see the irony of this statement? Well actual irony would be intentional, I think, and there wasn't any intentional irony involved. If you're using irony as a gentler term for hypocrisy, then ouch, but still no. When people look down on emotion it reminds me of school children mocking one another on the playground for being crybabies. I see it as a relatively primal defense mechanism, one that we learn really early and can eventually grow out of when we become confident enough to feel vulnerable. What is the irony?

Well actual irony would be intentional, I think, and there wasn't any intentional irony involved. If you're using irony as a gentler term for hypocrisy, then ouch, but still no. When people look down on emotion it reminds me of school children mocking one another on the playground for being crybabies. I see it as a relatively primal defense mechanism, one that we learn really early and can eventually grow out of when we become confident enough to feel vulnerable. What is the irony? I guess it's not as obvious as I thought. What I meant is that usually, most children don't have the mental capacity to distance themselves from their emotions.
Understanding that - yes I may feel emotional right now, but I don't have to let my emotions control me - seems to me like something that takes a lot more maturity and mental discipline.
Seeing a grown man acting in an infantile fashion and throwing an emotional tantrum, is not something to be cherished as a man "connected to his emotions" or a sign of maturity...
Therefore, saying that the ability to distance oneself from one's emotions is a childish impulse, is rather ironic...
We're each talking about different actions..and probably different ages of children as well. When I say distance, I don't mean recognizing an emotion and refusing to let it control you, I mean stigmatizing emotion itself as weakness. The way a twelve year old starts to harden on the outside and berate anyone else for letting their feelings show. It entails trying to ignore emotion as an aspect of who they are, and lying to themselves. The act you describe, or identifying oneself as being emotional and then controlling that emotion, actually embodies the opposite of what I was talking about. I agree that's it's usually a marker of maturity.

I'm using all dialog options at least once to see what kind of tempo they have, then I'll use whatever I feel like using at any given point in time during play run based on my current mood, random slide of the mouse, or coin flip. Same thing I do in all dialog choice games.

I tend to find attempts to distance oneself from emotion to be the more childlike impulse. It depends on the role you are expected to play in the moment. As a leader and adjudicator, it's important to be able to emotionally distance yourself from matters and keep a level head. On the other hand, if one of your squad mates turns to you as a friend for support and empathy, then you should try to engaging with how they're feeling.
I'll admit that in these games, I almost always lean towards stoicism unless it's particularly inappropriate. Even if I think the character would be feeling emotional, it just plays better to me to have a strong, heroic figure not wanting to show that in front of his men.

I definitely enjoy playing the aloof, stoic pragmatist sometime around my third playthrough. Usually I think of Batman as I do, but maybe this time I'll think of you instead.
