Hi all, I'm currently in the process of gathering research for a personal project based on Mass Effect 1, 2 & 3 and wanted some insight on the designated roles/jobs of the crew members and what they do day-to-day when not out on missions. I'm merging the crew so it's everyone from the trilogy. So far I've got this but I would love some more detail: - Chief Helmsman/Pilot - Joker (Bridge)
- Commander - Shepard
- Executive Officer (XO) - Miranda Lawson (Office)
- Chief Medical Officer/Doctor - Dr. Chakwas (Medical Bay)
- Gunnery Chief/Armorer - Ashley Williams and Jacob (Armory)
- Chief Scientific Officer/Research - Mordin (Research Lab)
- Archaeological & Galactic History Consultant - Liara (???)
- Chief Engineering Officer - Tali (Engineering Deck)
There are other key members of the crew, such as Garrus, Kaiden, Wrex, Grunt, Thane, Samara, Jack, Zaeed, and Legion. I'm sure Garrus and Kaiden have specific roles, but what about the others, do they just hang around the ship and do nothing? Roles such as Firefighter, Communications Officer, Cook, Janitor, Maintenance, Navigation and someone who scans planets are important too. Who would do these? Thanks so much in advance!

In ME1 and ME3, Adams is the chief engineer; in ME2, I'd say that Ken and Gabby split the role between them. I don't think Tali ever gets the job in any official capacity, she ends up helping out in engineering unofficially because she's very good at it. Perhaps it might be more accurate to call her an engineering consultant rather than chief engineer?
Based on ME3, a case could be made for Liara being an intelligence officer. Miranda has shades of that in ME2.
If Mass Effect used Star Trek terminology, "chief tactical officer" might suit Garrus in ME2 and ME3.

Comms is Samantha Traynor ME3 Cook/janitor/maintenance is the awesome Mess Sergeant Rupert Gardner ME2 Navigation/XO is Pressly. In ME1 anyways and at the very beginning of ME2 Shuttle pilot is Steve Cortez ME3 Chief engineer would be Greg Adams, ME1/3, not Tali. Engineer Ken Donnelly and Gabriella Daniels for ME2 and in ME3 help as well bodyguard is space hamster ME2/3

The ranks and duties of many of the characters change over the course of the Trilogy. The Wiki has profiles for every key character that will help you fill in a lot of the details you're seeking: masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_WikiFor example: The cook on Normandy SR-1 is never introduced (although there is probably one); in ME2, the cook aboard the SR-2 is Rupert Gardner; in ME3, there is again no official cook introduced to us; at one point, James is shown using the kitchen to cook himself some eggs, but he is clearly not the ship's cook As a further example: The Chief Engineer on Normandy SR-1 is Greg Adams; in ME2, engineering duties are divided between Ken Donnelly and Gabriele Daniels. To the best of my knowledge, Tali is never appointed "Chief Engineering Officer" of either Normandy SR-1 or Normandy SR-2. In ME3, she may be serving as an Admiral for the Quarian Migrant Fleet. Even Shepard's position changes - Initially, he/she serves as X0 of Normandy SR-1 under the Command of Captain David Anderson (he become Councillor Anderson or wind up serving as Ambassador/Councillor Udina's assistant) In ME3, Anderson is an Admiral with the Alliance serving a leader of the resistance on Earth. It is not until after Shepard becomes as Spectre that he/she is installed as Commanding Officer of Normandy SR-1. Shepard's initial rank is Lieutenant Commander. It is believed that, at some point in the Trilogy, he/she is promoted to Staff Commander (but it is unclear). In ME2, Shepard has no official rank in the Alliance. He/she serves as the person in charge of Normandy SR-2 and everyone still calls him/her "Commander" but his/her official designation within the Cerberus ranking system is never revealed... and since Shepard never really joins Cerberus, it is unlikely that he/she has a truly official position. The XO and Navigator of Normandy SR-1 is Charles Pressly.

Just to add to the above, the XO in ME3 is probably the Virmire survivor. None of the aliens can be the ship's executive officer as they aren't part of the Alliance. When the VS is in the hospital (or dead or sent to Hackett) Adams likely wears two hats, and is the XO as well as head of engineering. Chakwas outranks him, but in real world armies & navies medical officers have such a specialized and technical skillset that they aren't given duties outside the medical field. Joker lacks maturity and appears to have less time in service than Adams, and as ship's pilot probably wouldn't be able to perform the duties of the XO. Ashley was likely the platoon sergeant for the Normandy's marine detachment in ME1. Kaidan, the platoon commander. While the Alliance combines the functions of an army, navy, and marine corps into a single military service, not all Alliance personnel are marines. Marines are solely those Alliance Navy personnel who have military occupational specialties in the ground combat field. (infantry, artillery, armor, ect) Shepard, Ash, and Kaidan are marines, Joker, Adams, and Pressly aren't. In ME3 the role of platoon commander for the marine detachment is likely filled by Vega. There aren't any named enlisted marine NCOs, so the platoon sergeant would be unknown. Traynor is enlisted, but she's purely navy like Joker or Adams.
