They lay 1000 eggs every year. 1 successful birth every year is still comparable to a busy human couple. Yeah, they're so doomed. Except it does not affect the number of egg, but if a pregnancy comes to term. So no it is absolutly not 1 successful birth every year, but most likely a miscariage every year. They give birth to dead krogan again and again until it became too hard, that is the horror the genophage, Eve explained that. Just imagine a woman who had to go throuh 3,5,10 miscariages to have one sane child and that you have to go through it several times to have a stable population (and remember that even without war, krogan inhabit dangerous planet so 2 children/woman is not a solution to a stable population. In regards to the not wanting to have kids due to miscarriages and krogan having clutches of eggs, what I'm curious about is how they give birth. Do they lay eggs like say, chickens, and wait for them to hatch in a nest or something, or are they ovoviviparous (they store the eggs internally and they hatch inside of the mother, you see this in some sharks, amphibians, and a few others)? It seems to me like a miscarriage would be more traumatic if it was the second case

I think by egg they mean the usual female reproductive cell, meaning they are no different than human on that part
Eve do talk about giving birth, if it was not an internal process it would be a weird way to phrase it.

I think by egg they mean the usual female reproductive cell, meaning they are no different than human on that part Eve do talk about giving birth, if it was not an internal process it would be a weird way to phrase it. The term clutch of eggs which I've seen in reference to the Krogan is specific to eggs where the embryo is sustained by the yolk such as those made by amphibians, reptiles or birds, rather than just the normal female reproductive cells. The Krogan could have eggs like this and still "give birth" as Eve put it if they hatched internally like they do in certain species of sharks and snakes.

So the Initiative launched before Shepard cures the genophage (or didn't), meaning the Krogan that go to Andromeda are presumably still suffering from the 1 in a 1000 pregnancies being viable. Since there will only be a few thousand Krogan arriving in Andromeda, it seems to me like they are sort of screwed, what with low birthrate, small gene pool etc. Anyone have thoughts on this? The genophage wasn't designed to make them go extinct. If they would just stop killing each other and implement some strict breeding programs, they'd be fine. They can live for up to 2000 years, possibly even longer. Their fertile years are probably longer than the average human lifespan. In the trilogy I was really hoping that the Krogan would just grow as a species and develop some sense of responsibility. Wrex uniting the clans, protecting the female clans and enforcing breeding programs was the right way to go. Once they had demonstrated that they can handle the responsibility of moderating their own population growth (like the Salarians), the genophage could have been lifted. Instead after you cure the genophage, they start breeding like rabbits again. I'm really hoping that Andromeda will handle this in a way that doesn't leave the Krogans as a species of savage r-strategists. I really dont get the genophage, isnt the galaxy big enough for everyone? The galaxy is big, but there's a limited number of habitable worlds. The Krogans were taking them whenever they needed another one, even kicking colonists from other council races off of them. Imagine the killer bunny from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Now imagine lots of them breeding like actual bunnies. That's the Krogan pre-genophage.

I think a total cure in Andromeda would dilute the importance of the two instances of a cure that happened in the original trilogy.
The second miraculous cure in Mass Effect 3 already messed with the novelty of the first cure....

Depends on how the Krogan treat the issue of reproduction in Andromeda.
Krogans live for thousands of years if they manage to stay alive that long, aside from the horror and psychological impact of stillbirth it were never the genophage killing the krogan with the reproduction rates they do have, but the warlike and ultra violent culture of their species.

The Krogan will not be doomed because of their altered birth rate. The Genophage was meant to slow their reproduction not eliminate it. Still cruel tho. The Krogan will be doomed because of their violent tendencies and horrible choices. The game hasn't even been released yet and we already know the Krogan are screwing themselves.
We already know that the Krogan have chosen a hostile desert planet low on natural resources to settle on. Um, maybe it would be better to choose a planet where any young Krogan would have a better chance at survival?
We already know that the Krogan have, upon almost immediately arriving to Andromeda, a hostile and unknown frontier, isolated themselves from The Initiative and other Milky Way species. So if the Krogan, through their predictably violent and irrational behavior, piss off the Kett, Angara or another advanced Andromeda species why would the other Milky Way species, who have problems of their own, come to their aid?
If the Krogan go extinct in Andromeda it will be of their own doing, not because of the Genophage.

My guess is that there will be some sort of compromise. I wouldn't be surprised if clan Nakmor(sp?) worked out some sort of deal with the Andromeda Inititative pre launch and we get a quest to fill the AI's part of that bargain.

Well we know that it is possible to make a cure, without maleon's data that would be difficult but not impossible.
