Well that sucks. Since we have so few companions this time, you'd think they'd step up the customization. Can we even issue attack/power orders during combat anymore? Sort of. There's no power wheel, like before, but using the directional buttons you can get your companions to hit specific enemies and they're smart enough to know what power is appropriate for combos and the like. For example, if you throw a Singularity and command Cora to attack someone in there, she'll charge in to detonate a Biotic combo. As for the outfits...that sucks, though hopefully we can cause enough of a stink to have them add new outfits in a patch -- same thing happened with Inquisition a few times. Worst case? Maybe a 5 dollar DLC. The no gun thing is a bit baffling. Like, why make such an extensive system to use only for you? I could understand them limiting what guns they can have (like maybe Cora only takes shotguns, or Liam assault rifles), but nothing at all? So weird.

I think you mean day one DLC pack. $7.99 I'm betting at least $10 Nah, EA's messed up but not that messed up. If anything, I would wager that it would be the same price as the Spoils DLC for Inquisition at $5.

I approve of that choice. Customizing your player character should be enough for scratching that itch and expressing yourself. Squadmates should be their own characters, not dolls to play dress up with. And at some point all the customization in conjunction with crafting just gets too much. I don't think "expressing yourself" is the issue for a lot of us. DAI's crafting system offered a lot of the game's strategic depth. You needed to decide what to optimize, who to optimize it on, and how to employ the limited supply of certain crafting mats. Most of the depth comes from outfitting the squadmates ; obviously the PC gets the best of everything since she's guaranteed to be in every fight.

Well that sucks. Not even being able to change weapons within the type they use? Weird that we have so many options to customize Ryder, but such a historical few for squadmates.
Being pestered by environmental hazards on a frozen planet in full battle armor while Peebee prances around in her midriff-baring outfit is going to feel a bit stupid for sure.

The fact that squadmates are seen with a fixed weapon in cutscene instead of their own is a lot worse now given this choice. I'm concerned on how they'd scale compared to yours and the level up.

I'll admit this is a little disappointing.
I didn't expect to have my whole team in ME1 Phoenix armor, but I had at least assumed they would stick with the ME2-ME3 system of 2 or 3 pre-made outfits to choose from and the inevitable DLC outfit pack with really bad visors you can't take off.
As much as I might want to take PeeBee with me to most places, I think I'd let her stay on the ship when I get to the ice planet...she won't do me any good if she gets hypothermia because she can't dress in layers.
The weapon thing is a bit of a mystery to me unless it really is about showing them using the right weapons...which as others pointed out hasn't actually happened a lot in most of the cutscenes we've seen. I would like to believe that's earlier builds without the day one patching, but that's quite a lot to expect to get added in at launch. Though I do remember the DA:I team showed a lot of videos of archers without their quivers for like a year or more and didn't see any until close to launch. Sometimes this is what happens...*fingers crossed*

Since you can heavily customize your weapons, AI wouldn't know how to use them anymore. Also gameplaywise, in a shooter you want the player do the shooting and AI is there for show and performing player initiated combos.
There'll probably be DLC for alternative outfits, there isn't really any reason not to have it from technical standpoint.

I thought it'd be like that. What a great move. It is a feature where they certainly, without a doubt, managed to get the worst result of the IP so far. Actually, it's the worse situation of all recent Bioware games, since in DA2 you could change weapons. And the fact that they said many times in the last months that the system would work similar to ME2 and ME3 means they were, for some reason, cut from the game. If they're free the move might gain a more positive vibe, but I'm doubtful.

Not that I used this feature much in previous ME games. The outfit thing doesn't bother me at all, but honestly why can't we change weapons. That seems just silly.

So they'll become stronger as Ryder level up. I still don't like it, but I guess it should avoid making them becoming useless.

Well that sucks. Since we have so few companions this time, you'd think they'd step up the customization. Can we even issue attack/power orders during combat anymore? My thoughts exactly. Weird. Being given such an intimate number of squad mates, I thought we'd have a hefty load of content with them.

Well, this is dissapointing. I have been bracing myself for this possibility for a while but it is a bit weird and dissapinting all the same. If they would change on their own, I would have no problems, I would even prefer, taking care of their own lives. But expect to see an Avenger and predator in all missions. Its pretty clear by now that each squad mate has their own favorite preffered weapon. We have seen them in the bio. The 'Razad' Shotgun, the Outlaw Pistol, I think Liam likes a Cyclone AR. So each sqaudmate won't be running around with the same weapon, whatever that weapon is. Yeah they made this pretty clear in one of their trailers. Each squad mate is unique in some way.

Which might be the reason for doing this honestly. I mean the more options you give the player the more bland everything sometimes feels and the more...thinly spread...everything is...if you can have fewer options you can have a much more defined experience which helps your characters feel more like characters. Theoretically anyways.

From the footage I've seen the infamous avenger is back. I'd be (sort of) fine with the choice of weapons being unchangeable for the squad if they managed to put their own weapons in cutscenes. With how the system works, the Avenger being always present is worse then before.

I approve of that choice. Customizing your player character should be enough for scratching that itch and expressing yourself. Squadmates should be their own characters, not dolls to play dress up with. And at some point all the customization in conjunction with crafting just gets too much. This is my feelings on the matter. I thought DAI was an elegant solution to those who weren't happy about DA2's limited companion customization while appeasing those like me, who enjoyed each companion having their own distinct flavor of gear. However, obsessively crafting upgraded armor for the 6 companions I kept in rotation probably added about five hours to every playthrough. I mean, at least. As for weapons, eh. I feel like weapons were a weird afterthought in ME2, where you can't even directly compare stats, and the upgrade mechanism in ME and ME3 was great for Shepard but got tedious for companions. If they would have added a way to upgrade weapons and mods IN the loadout UI in ME3, it might have worked for me, but getting rid of it completely does, too! Of course, this is coming from the perspective of someone who doesn't consider promises of customization to include companions. It's fine if it does, and I'll add my DAI squads as being just the freshest and most pattern-coordinated in Thedas, but the PC is all I really care about and I'm just as comfortable letting companions have their own thing as I am pretending like I'm forcing them to look like my backup band.

My opinion on EA isn't exactly high, but I'd prefer to not blame them for every problem. Expecially because we'll still be stuck with the same weapons for the squad. It's a design choice first, even if maybe EA then took advantage of it.
