The limited number is understandable. Not many person would leave everything forever just for the unknown. Also the AI need as many manpower as possible they must have been pretty cool on their candidate background. For the 14 month thing. It is 14 month without the arks or planets suited for life and both of these reason ended up screwing the entire Nexus from basic life-sustain. So yeah in 14 months I guess some people were pissed to be stranded without hope for survivability, loved one still in cryo or missing and with rationing. Imagine to live in a country for a year in those conditions.
also you might want to add spoiler tag. For a Salarian, sure, it is a big deal, but an Asari or Krogan? A year is (should be) NOTHING to them. I would expect Salarians to get pissed. But we fight rebel Krogans and Asari too. 14 months of hardships is perfectly understandable to begin some anxiety (not in Krogan or Asari, it should be just a minor annoyance for them when you look at the bigger picture), but killing one another? Did the leadership of AI never heard of some standard cliche`s like "we're in this together" or "no matter what happens, we need to support each other"? Remember the not enough food part ? Leaving your previous life and discover you were sent to a death trap with no hope of long term survivability is no good.
Asari and Krogan need to eat too, and yes 14 months of attrition is a lot. But the mutinery is not led by asari but humans.

Without going into spoilers, this is explained early on in the game. Suffice to say the Initiative did not live up to all its promises and a lot of people were angry.

If you know what happens on the Nexus, it's understandable.

Or make destroy the only ending to ME3. For the next 10 years, the Andromeda project uses the destroyed reapers to build the ships and Nexus. People volunteer to join since they lost everything, family and friends, to the reaper war. They want a fresh start. No canon ending. Deal with it. Such a helpful post.

So, I jumped into ME:A MP Gamespot stream and saw that there's a Milky Way faction you fight in MP. That makes Andromeda Initiative even more nonsensical. If we ignore the aspect of not really needing to search for a new Earth/Palaven/Thessia/Sur'Kesh with multiple colonizable planets in the Milky Way left to be discovered, it should at least take people who want to build that new home, not stir up shit and kill each other. 20 000 people per ark is VERY limited. Why Andromeda Initiative goes to shit after mere 14 months? Was there another Ark filled with criminals and their mechs? Here's hoping it will be plausibly explained in the game. The Nexus went into " The Scourge", kills off much of the leadership including Jien Garson.
So they are stuck there, with no leadership, limited supply, no habitable golden world and tons of hostile Kett
Mutiny started, authority make a deal with the Krogan, Krogan put down the mutiny
Then the Krogan was also screwed over and they left too.
No leaderships so everything falls apart, now the Pathfinder is there to fix everything. Take note that Jien Garson was very charismatic like Shephard, she convinced everyone to come along. When she died there was no replacement to keep everyone together.
