I'm right, your wrong primitive. Can you really be so obtuse? How dare the unwashed masses not receive the revelation of my wisdom and enlightenment. Come forth humble peasant and bathe in the dazzling aura of my intellect. Drink from the fountain of reason, my reason for only I speak the truth. Kneel before the superior intellect accept my infallibility.
Human nature: communication, ego and motivation
Whatever forum it may be we see the same types of threads and posts, the endless circular arguments, sometimes heated, passionate, earnest, angry and angst-ridden. What I find particularly depressing is the intolerance of other people's opinion especially those who view a contrary opinion as a personal attack on them. Have people lost the capacity to stand outside of themselves and play the devils advocate using empathy and logic or can we now only view a topic emotionally and from our own pov?
Sometimes I'm lucky and I stop myself going down this path but sometimes my own self indulgence leads an intellectual marching band with ill-deserved confidence up and down Condescension Avenue. Human nature being what it is we are all guilty of this at some point. We can all be overly precious navel gazers at times. Do you, as I do struggle to keep this big mouth in check and keep Commander Arrogant from breaking out from your mental brig?
Fortunately my deep insecurity and paranoia does somewhat temper the excesses of my ego.
Additional: Ironically I have amended the above title as it occured to me that it might be a bit supercilious of me to call this thread "The Supercilious Thread". As well as the above real world issues, this thread also covers characterization and the depiction of the personality, ego, dilemma's/conflicts etc. in popular fiction.

Human nature is barely human.
Good post. If we had more genuine interaction in real life, this stuff wouldn't happen nearly as much.
The season 3 opening episode of Black Mirror nailed this thing... The "like" desires outdo the desire to do actual likeable things. It is a hard episode to watch, but it hammers a point.

You could call it Javik Syndrome, "primitive".
Also their is a tendancy to dehumanize people by categorizing and attaching labels to them. It's easy to dismiss, insult and attack a faceless group but it's harder to do this to an actual living breathing person standing in front of you.
This is the age of the label: liberal/conservative, progressive, neo-liberal, neo-con, hater/fanboy....ad nauseam.....There's so many it's hard to keep up with them.
Personally I hate labels and refuse to use them. I'm not a number or a thing and I dislike being filed and categorized, my indiviuality is extremely important to me. The only label I wish attached to me is human being.

For real though, I do admit I'm guilty of being biased towards confirming opinions and almost everyone does it sometime or the other. It is even more apparent in something more subjective like your favorite game, movies or even food. I try not to be a colossal douche about it but it is tempting though!

I find that doing this helps............... But seriously, it is hard to keep the red mist at bay sometimes. I suppose having an ironic attitude/philosophy does help control things a bit and I've always enjoyed gallows humor, and do like to poke fun at myself. Life's too short. The egocentric have always amused me. I'm amazed that some people can squeeze their massive head out their front door given their inflated opinion of themselves. The ones with the messianic zeal (any opinion/issue) are particulary bizarre i.imgur.com/7Buds08.gif

As the Good Book says: Proverbs 26 (ISV)On Fools26:1 Like snowfall in summer or rain at harvest time, so honor is inappropriate for a fool. 2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a swallow in flight, a curse without cause will not alight. 3 A whip is for the horses, a bridle is for the donkey, a rod is for the back of fools. 4 Don’t answer a fool according to his foolishness, or you will be just like him. 5 Answer a fool according to his foolishness, or he will think himself to be wise. 6 Whoever sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off his own feet and drinks violence. 7 Useless legs to the lame— that’s what a proverb quoted by a fool is. 8 Tying a stone to a sling— that’s what giving honor to a fool is. 9 A thorn in the hand of a drunkard— that’s what a proverb quoted by a fool is. 10 An archer who shoots at anyone— is like someone who hires a fool or anyone who passes by. 11 A dog that returns to its vomit is like a fool who reverts to his folly. 12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own opinion? There’s more hope for a fool than for him. On Laziness 13 The lazy person claims, “There is a lion in the road! There’s a lion in the streets!” 14 The door turns on its hinges— as does the lazy person on his bed. 15 The lazy person buries his hand in the dish, but he’s too tired to bring it to his mouth again. 16 The lazy person is wiser in his own opinion than seven men who can give an appropriate response. 17 Picking up a dog by the ears— that’s what someone is like who meddles in another’s fight. 18 Like the maniac who shoots fiery darts and deadly arrows— 19 that’s what someone is like who lies to his neighbor and then says, “I was joking, wasn’t I?” On Gossip and Backbiting 20 Without wood, the fire goes out. Without a gossip, contention stops. 21 Charcoal is to hot coals as wood is to fire; so also a quarrelsome man fuels strife. 22 The words of a gossip are like delicate morsels; they sink down deep within. 23 A clay vessel plated with a thin veneer of silver— that’s what smooth lips with a wicked heart are. 24 Someone who hates hides behind his words, harboring deceit within himself. 25 Though he speaks graciously, don’t believe him, for there are seven detestable things in his heart. 26 Though malice disguises itself with deception, its evil will be exposed publicly. 27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and the stone will come back on whoever starts it rolling. 28 A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth causes ruin. www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+26&version=ISV

I find it helps to bear these simple rules in mind when communicating with others:
Rules Of Aquisition
7. Always keep you ears open
30. Talk is cheap; synthehol costs money
36. Too many Ferengi can't laugh at themselves anymore
39. Praise is cheap. Heap it generously on all customers
43. Caressing an ear is often more forceful than pointing a weapon
47. Never trust a man wearing a better suit than your own
48. The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife
51. Never admit a mistake if there's someone else to blame
76. Every once in a while, declare peace. It confuses the hell out of your enemies
83. Revenge is profitless
105. Wise men don't lie, they just bend the truth
125. A lie isn't a lie until someone else knows the truth
126. A lie isn't a lie, it's just the truth seen from a different point of view
143. The family of Fools is ancient
160. Respect is good, Latinum is better
225. Pride comes before a loss
229. Beware the man who doesn't make time for oo-mox
251. Satisfaction is not guaranteed
259. A lie is a way to tell the truth to someone who doesn't know
271. There's many witty men whose brains can't line their pockets

Rationalizing and coming to terms with the duality of Man in oneself. That scene succinctly expresses that struggle beautifully.

BTW, I don't consider any of this to be off topic. This thread's probably more about human nature than anything else. It all comes under relationships, communication, motivations, psychology, ego and our own opinion of ourselves and others. It also examines how far any individual is prepared to go to achieve their aims. Good well written sci fi can really explore, analyse and illustrate these areas.
Oh, here's the extended scene, more context:
I love the whole Machiavellian aspect of DS9. It seems that every character at one point or another indulges in some sort of plotting, scheming and positioning. Also it's not restricted to the obvious "usual suspect" rogue/renegade/villain characters such as Quark, Garak and Dukat but necessity often requires the noble paragon characters to get their hands dirty.
Dramatically this strengthens the paragon characters by making them more nuanced and realistic. This makes it easier for an audience to bond and empathise with a character as it creates the impression of a real flawed human being, dealing with difficult circumstances and often finding themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are not unbelievable fantastical saints.
" And thank you, Captain. Thank you for restoring my faith in the ninety eighth Rule of Acquisition. Every man has his price. "

Rationalizing and coming to terms with the duality of Man in oneself. That scene succinctly expresses that struggle beautifully. This is quite an interesting video on the classic cult tv show The Prisoner. Mr McGoohans honesty and lack of ego and vanity in admitting to the shows financier that he was struggling to find an ending to the show is admirable. His enlightened view of criticism and mature response to the anger that his ending provoked is particularly fascinating when viewed in comparison to similar decisions, reactions and real life events in the Mass Effect series. It's interesting to note in the longer version of the same interview that Patrick McGoohan describes the threats made against him and his family after the hysterical reaction to the conclusion of The Prisoner and how he had to go into hiding. It just shows that obsessive over-reacting fans, thuggery and intimidation are not an exclusively modern phenomenon. The only difference is that modern technology makes it much easier and quicker for the reprobate and hothead to harass/stalk their victims and invade their lives.

Sneering is global in it's technological reach and is capable of forming mobbing villagers, in this communicative borderless state, who are only limited by their knowledge and self-interest. Yet, in this is hope revealed in the understanding that the village is now larger than the monolith. That to preach a return to thoughts of isolationatism is to prune one's own branch from the tree of life. Relevant clip: 1:08:37 - 1:15:05
