So i wanted to go back on the tutorial, to its writting to be more specific.
Now be aware it spoils alot the first hour of the game. Leave now if you wanna keep this slice of the game spoilerfree.
I do feel like the opening and the tutorial mission on Habitat 7 is more clever than i was expecting. I can't stop thinking that Alec Ryder is used as a living metaphor for both returning players from ME 1-2-3 and the dev team itself. And somehow that's clever.
1) Alec Ryder and returning players:
Alec Ryder is veteran, with N7 ranking that had sacrifiedd alot for the alliance. He is good at everything: Combat, strategy, diplomacy, engineering, a potent biotic, software programing, etc. He had to take difficult decisions and broke the galatic laws many times.
Shepard is a veteran, with N7 ranking that had sacrifed alot for the alliance. He is good at everything: Combat (obviously), diplomacy (ME2&3), engineering (that's even one of his class), a potent biotic (ditto), etc. He had to take difficult decisions (oh ya!) and worked around the law too. Except he was somehow allowed to (specter status).
I think you see where i am going. Alec Ryder is "a Shepard" that never been played by us. The fact he is perfect in everything -like our shepard was- is an other point in commun they have the both of them.
Alec dies and Shepard is gone. This is for us to let Shepard go and this is a reminder than now we ain't playing a living perfection anymore. The legendary hero is gone. Time for us to move on and step up.
2:) Alec Ryder and the dev team:
Alec is the father of the main protagonist. He is perfect in everythiing he does mimic Shepard the previous acclaimed hero. He dies after failling to protect his Arch. He skipped protocol and outrank his officier in second to give the pathfinder responsability for somebody who wasn't ready for it nor was second in line.
I feel they are telling us their personal story. When Casey Hudson left (whatever the reason) somebody had to step up. The legendary creator of Mass Effect and the man responsable for all these good games ain't here anymore. A person not ready for the original task has to step up and play the role of creative director here.
A tiny bit later, Ryder is doubted and treaten badly by people of the Nexus simply because he/she isn't Alec Ryder and hadn't his legendary record nor his ablities. That too makes me think about the new team that has to prove us and prove EA that they can do it.
I may be mistaken here but i find this interesting and that's how i felt after the prologue. And that's clever. Shepard and Casey Hudson are gone... Fine, move on and let's do it people.
Do you agree? Do you come down to the same conclusion?
