Kaidan has lackluster gameplay utility in ME1. In ME3, he's a Miranda clone. Ashley is useful in ME1 for her tankiness, and in ME3, is only worth having for Marksman (at least, for my Soldier-based play style.) Funny thing here. I remember one PT where I was on Pinnacle Station. I did a lot of mixing and matching of squadmates. I had ONE squadmate who NEVER went down during Pinnacle. It was Kaidan. Individual experiences will vary - Kaidan tended to be squishy, and his skill set in ME1 was pretty useless for me.

People use squadmate abilities?? jk of course, but I tended to try to make the most military/soldier type squads that I could. So in ME1, it'd be Ashley and Garrus/Wrex for the majority of the game. (I did roll with A/K a lot before virmire as well) In ME2, it kinda sucked because I didn't get the solider type vibe from anyone really (up until I get Garrus/Zaeed) so... my squad was basically just whoever until I could get those 2. And in ME3, it was Garrus and Javik/Ashley/Rotating carousel. Never really worried about their powers as if I couldn't take it down with my own abilities, I would just pull a liam and keep shooting it in the face. So that didn't even factor in to my vote. Probably should have lol

Miranda would have more votes,if she wasn't weighed down by Jacob. True, but if you measure the hate against squadmates on forums, Kaidan, Jacob and Liam (the 3 human males) come first (especially Kaidan I guess, or at least a lot people were glad to kill him in ME1). So every human duo is penalized by the males. I'm certain the Miranda/Jack (or Miranda with any human DLC character) would get more votes.

Between option given I guess Ashley/Kaiden. I always liked Kaiden even if he never makes it past Virmire for me. He gets story killed each time. I send him with the salarians because communication between them and us seems too be a more leadership role, and then keeping the bomb safe seems more important so I always go back for Ashley who I dislike in ME1 and dislike more in ME2-3. But for 3/4th the game I got someone I actually like.
Miranda/Jacob im meh on both of them.
Cora/Liam dislike cora, irritated with Liam.

I like Ashley. People get too strung up on the whole pro-human side of Ashley, which any experienced ME'er will tell you she overcomes throughout the series - it's part of her angle. Hey, not every companion can be perfect and not every companion is meant to be immediately warmed to. Kaiden is inoffensively bland, but undoubtedly one of the few somewhat unquestioningly loyal and 'nice' companions, even despite the Cerberus ties. He always died in my playthroughs, which is a shame - he doesn't really thaw until the third, though even then there's not a whole lot of fire to him as they seem to just drop the ball on his biotic story. Overall they're a solid duo - soldier and bio, stubborn/driven hothead and level-headed/calm. Their downfall is that they're humans in a game favouring the unknown/unexplored - you know, 'aliens'. Perfectly fine with Miranda - like Ashley, you're not exactly meant to warm to her immediately. Trust is earned, after all - but Jacob I couldn't give a damn about. Put any other human with her and I'm cool with that. Zaeed, Jack, hell even the ME3 crew. Unfortunately, their downfall is that they're humans. I like Cora for reasons expressed in her mega-thread. Liam, on the other-hand, is intolerable. Really don't get why the game makes it like there are two different Liam's - the do-good-nice-guy on the Tempest, and the one that joins you on missions that spends most of his time spewing toxic banter at almost everyone else other than the Pathfinder. Ultimately it doesn't matter - they're both humans. If I had to pick, I'd go with Ash and Kai for nostalgia sake and for being pioneers in the franchise, even if it is designed to rob of us one pretty early. Ashley gets bonus points as I favour Soldier playstyles in all games - she happens to be a competant AI partner in that regard as well. It is also more interesting to have character flaws. You're meant to be taken back by (or maybe even agree with) her early mentality, and some of it was actually justified. The council ride our ass for the entirety of ME1 and humans overall were looked down upon. It is no surprise some humans distrusted the 'aliens' or were sick of their attitude from a political standpoint, especially soldiers who the politicians themselves would piss around with.
Ashley, Cora and even Miranda have relatable issues they had to overcome before they really thawed, whereas people like Liam and Jacob don't really have that - and Kaiden feels like his story was cut halfway through. Hmph, probably because they were humans. Bah, filthy aliens.

I voted for Kaiden and Ashley. I know it is unpopular to think so, but Kaiden is one of my favorite companions from the trilogy. Ashley generally becomes my Virmire sacrifice, but I thought she was well written, and she pairs really well with a straight, Paragon male Shepard story.
My favorite human is Kasumi Goto.

Ashley and Kaidan (I really wish I could safe Ashley on Virmire, she's really starting to grow on me during my current playthrough...but I just can't bring myself to kill Kaidan because he's my Shep's LI ) though I also like Miranda and Jacob (though imo he's a bit meh at times), Zaeed and Kasumi though if I have to choose my favorite humans, it's a tie between Kaidan(obviously ) and Kasumi (she's so funny (kinda wish she'd been a romance option for Male Shepard)
I've yet to play Andromeda, so I can't form an opinion on Liam and Cora yet

Yeah I do remember on one of my first playthrough's of ME3 when Tali committed suicide as I chose to save the Geth over the Quarians, that she was sad Tali died and kind of considered her like a little sister. But this was before I discovered how to save both. Generally now though especially when playing Paragon I do save both.

I actually voted for Miranda and Jacob, since I have played ME2 on Insanity with a soldier Shepard using just the two of them (except for specific loyalty missions with the others) and ME2 is arguably the toughest combat-wise of the three games represented (James and VS not being listed and ME3 not really having an opportunity to play through the main story with just the two squad mates). Jacob's skill set is on the weak side, but it is certainly possible to use his skills effectively alongside Miranda (pull and warp combo mostly). In ME3, I do find James and Kaidan a very effective team.

Given the wording, I voted Miranda and Jacob.
Their combined skillset covers everything. Warp Overload Pull Incendiary Ammo
You have all defenses covered, the biotic combo of ME2, and an ammo power that covers the toughest defense and a bonus against the most common enemy type.
Add in their weapons, bonus powers, and passives; you get more crowd-control, tanking, and a squad-wide boost to health and weapon damage.
It really shines with an Infiltrator. Stick Jacob in the front, Miranda on the flank, and you with a sniper rifle, and all ranges are covered.
But for depth, I'd say Ashley and Kaiden. You get 1 game with both, and 2.5 with one of them.
Cora and Liam are an interesting bunch, because Cora has a perma-spot in my squad, and Liam I find to be a good addition to any squad.
He's got a decent close/mid-range weapon, Overload for shields and mechs, Frag Grenades for burst damage and AOE, plus Havoc Strike for melee and off-tanking.
He's not particularly exceptional in any one area, but he fits well in a variety of areas.
I like Liam. He refuses to give up, and is optimistic in spite of everything. Naive? Yes, but his loyalty mission addresses that in a great way. His character growth shows him maturing, WITHOUT becoming bitter.
I know that's always going to be a matter of opinion, so I'm not saying anyone who disagrees is fundamentally wrong or anything like that.
It's still a good poll question though.
