I certainly think that's part of it. Bioware Montreal was in an impossible position. I said it in another thread but Mass Effect means a lot of different things to everyone, it'd be very hard for them to meet that. Another part of it though I think has to do with Open World games. The scope of the game was too large and aspects of the game suffered for it. Maybe its time for them to return to a more "intimate" type of game rather than going after that Skyrim money (that they never were going to get in the first place). Regardless of the reviews, I'm still looking forward to it. I just can't stand those people who are in the irrational part of the hate trend towards BioWare. No matter what BioWare does, they will hate and hate some more. BioWare is unfairly in a No Win Scenario. As opposed to those people who are the irrational part of the love trend towards BioWare and will defend them no matter they do? Each game they release is arguably worse than the previous one yet people will still defend them. No wonder the gaming industry is in such a shitty state right now if developers and publishers can do virtually anything they please and as long as they have a big name behind them people will still buy their games in millions. People have no respect for themselves these days it seems. You go ahead and buy it, just don't be surprised if next BioWare game is even more shit than this one. After all, why would they try if you will buy the game regardless.

"We learned from The Witcher, guys! Please buy our game now" -75 metacritic I think it's safe to say BioWare cut their losses about releasing this thing now. It wasn't worth it to polish it up further if its core concepts were that far from greatness. Anyone else canceling their pre-orders? Because of some reviews? Nope, which in fact weren't as bad as I thought they would be. The most important review for me is my own. And I already know what I think of the game based on the 10 hour trial.
I'm too old to follow the sheep. Instead I'm thinking for myself and decide for myself, not letting others do that for me.

They totally glossed over some of the problems all other reviews mentioned, though... I've been a subscriber to them for as long as they exists, but this isn't one of their best reviews. Also, as an aside, the VA in this game is actually better in German then it is English in places, which was quite shocking to me, TBH.

So what about some credit for BioWare having a policy of sharing review copies and where the embargo dropped before launch?
If the game was made by Ubisoft or Bethesda, you'd know nothing for days as the Reviewers would be battling through to play the game.
At least this way, we can read the conflicting opinions and add those to our own personal choices.

I think it's safe to say a lot is riding on Bioware's new IP at this point.

I figured it would be arounder 75 to 80.
Andromeda was always going to play it safe, seems like for some playing it safe is the problem in the end, outside of other issues.

Germany prob got the biggest dub industry in the world though, not that rare for dub VAs to be better (if the original were simply good-tier without standout quality) True, still, there are only a handful of really good video game VAs that pop up very often in most new AAA games... there also aren't many movie/TV celebrities doing voices for games, since those industries are very separate. Still - while I usually play games with original voices - MEA has quite a good dub, which even manages to make SOME of the writing work better in German... judging from the little I tried it/saw.

If the game was made by Ubisoft or Bethesda, you'd know nothing for days as the Reviewers would be battling through to play the game. At least this way, we can read the conflicting opinions and add those to our own personal choices. Fallout 4's reviews embargo was lifted day before release, so just like Andromeda. Doom had review embargo imposed until release, but the game turned out amazing (at least the single player part, but it's no wonder MP sucked since the game doesn't belong to consoles). As for Ubisoft, pretty much all their games are so crap that you don't need reviews to know they will be medicore at best. Siege is the only exception, but it only got better after many patches and strong competitive play focus (which means it was possible to fix the problems, unlike in story-driven single player games where you can't fix narrative and writing problems), and there are still many issues with the game to this day (and each patch that fixes something breaks something else). I mean, with the amount of controversy behind the game for quite some time already, putting release embargo would be a death blow to them. They took a gamble and imo it payed off, since despite some realistic low-score reviews, most sites gave them high score anyway. I wonder what the sales will be though.

I'll admit that thought briefly flitted across my mind earlier. I wonder how things would be on BSN Prime now if we were still 'official BSN'? The Meltdown would be on a scale not seen since ME3's ending. Not a chance, this is nowhere near on ME3 endings debacle level.

EDIT: Also how bad some people think the writing is depends at least partially on personal preference.

At some point, writing is just objectively bad from a literary standpoint.

If ME going under means DA comes out faster than fine let it burn. ME should've been shelved after ME3 anyway. What if it means EA cancelling Bioware games completly

Jesus christ, heads are going to roll. May I press the button on the guillotine? (you guys get the pleasure of catching them and holding them down!) I hope it's better than that (I liked the trial, sure some moments were cringe worthy (like the A.I. guys at the start more or less telling you what a pathfinder-team is and what it does (I think most of us know that by heart already!)...sure the woman with the "...make it somewhere tropical..." was ok, but the guy? Damned!) and some stuff looked forced (why the hell is Alec not using N7 armor? I mean armor is probably fitted to the person, especially if it's N7-Grade stuff (stuff for normal grunts probably not so much, but special forces guys get their own stuff and even adjust and modify their own guns (want a different grip-handle? Sure go for it! Want a larger (or smaller!) magazine? Sure! Want a shorter or more durable barrel? Go for it! etc. etc.), so why is he using Initiative armor?)...but other than that? It wasn't bad and let's face it: ME1, 2 and 3 had equally bad starts (it's always a few minutes (or none in ME2's case!) of giving you directions and then BAM (!) action! No great world building etc. at the start (that comes later, in ME1 when you reach the citadel, in ME2 when you reach the second Cerberus base and get your ship and in ME3 after Mars (again on the Citadel)), no real tutorial mission (it's learn on the fly!) etc...as long as it's not as bad as 3 I am half ways satisfied already (not that I will not complain about stuff I notice during the game that I don't like!)...same if it's not immitating Dragon Age: Inquisition (empty areas with tons of MMO-Style fetch quests!)) greetings LAX

I'm always puzzled by bioware apparently having great writing credentials. They are fine, but it has never been as amazing as people make out. most of their games have plot holes you can drive a bus through, and for every ME3 Garrus there's a ME1 Kaidan.

Oh, sure, which has to be expected with different writers... but the more apparent the differences in quality are, the worse the overall narrative quality and cohesion becomes. Even an Ernest Hemingway novel would drop in quality if half the characters had been written by an E.L. James (Fifty Shades of Grey).

Germany prob got the biggest dub industry in the world though, not that rare for dub VAs to be better (if the original were simply good-tier without standout quality) Thanks to dubbing, I can speak German. Quite a few years ago, the only way to watch Star Trek in my country was over satellite on German SAT1 TV channel. Sure enough it was dubbed. Teenage me wouldn't take no for an answer where Star Trek was concerned, so I watched every episode with the remote in one hand and dictionary in another. Safe to say it paid off!

I must be getting old. In my younger years, I had gamer subscriptions to help decide if and when to buy a game. Learned the hard way that 9+ or the 6- from any reviewer doesn't mean anything. The games I play over and over mean a lot to me personally but I honestly could not see that adequately reflected by any "reviewers score".
The most saddening thing today is that "doing your own thing, your way" like making your own opinion count, is mostly overruled by the "majority" of the outside world. With what I have read about this "review ratings" is that most people suck this up as if this is their personal review without actually having played the game themselves.
So many opinions but no reality check, welcome to the new world! I will formulate my opinion after playing the full game.

Regardless of Gamestar, the writing have been praised and criticized by reviews. It's not something everyone said it's negative, overall. I wonder the context. Is it an actual quality issue, or a tonal issue? Were people expecting the darker shades of the trilogy and dissapointed? Is the writing really banal and too whedonesque? I feel like that should be conveyed in these reviews, most do not do so.
