Germany prob got the biggest dub industry in the world though, not that rare for dub VAs to be better (if the original were simply good-tier without standout quality) Thanks to dubbing, I can speak German. Quite a few years ago, the only way to watch Star Trek in my country was over satellite on German SAT1 TV channel. Sure enough it was dubbed. Teenage me wouldn't take no for an answer where Star Trek was concerned, so I watched every episode with the remote in one hand and dictionary in another. Safe to say it paid off! Oh, TV and movie dubbing is far better then games dubbing for sure... just not when it comes to accents. I, for instance can't - for the life of me - watch Lucifer in German TV, since the character looses all charm without the British accent.

Kinda balanced out by EA's habit of striking special deals with reviewers and trying to influence scores before hand... gut sure, there was at least some descent behavior there. @the Elder King: Well, they didn't really critique the writing, which others did, they actually thought the UI is good, which most others pointed out as a negative,.. stuff like that. Read it again, they say something about Romance Writing and compare early dialogue to B-Movie-Sci-Fi. EDIT: Also how bad some people think the writing is depends at least partially on personal preference. ... If you hadn't noticed mass effect since its origin had always been written like a B sci fi movie and that is one its main charm. Unless that is you think that resurrected foot soldier going against space ships is a hallmark of high level writing. What matters is whether the writing is fun and the game is fun.

Most of the reviews that I have read are in line with my expectations based on the 10 hour access. I'm generally happy, but see some flaws (and the game should have been more polished for the amount of time taken.
Pre-order not cancelled.

The reviews I've read have been very inconsistent.
Half of them say that the combat and gameplay is great but the characters/writing are weak.
The other half say that the gameplay is dull and boring but the characters and writing are strong...

I read through the Eurogamer review and one thing really irked me - the comment about the crew not being as likable as the Normandy one.
Am I alone in saying that if I was to review ME1 as a standalone then I wouldn't have praised your crew? I couldn't hack Ashley. Kaiden was bland. Garrus was annoying. Liara waffled too much. Wrex didn't waffle enough and Tali was kinda just there.
By ME3 I loved these characters and always will. But it sure didn't happen overnight. I feel like it's a bit of an unfair comparison.
If I'm honest it often takes me a couple of playthroughs to warm to some characters. I hated everyone in DA2 when I first ran through it. But they all grew on me in a second run.

I think fans expect the story and characters to be as deep as the whole trilogy combined, forgetting that it's MEA and not ME4, making the game more comparative to ME1 than the whole trilogy in my opinion, and some people are obviously still upset about ME3's ending. Which is also the cause in my opinion to people inflating the issues with the bugs and animations quality.
Some things i don't like but they won't really make my personal experience with the game less fun. - No Weapons on Nomad/Tempest. - No Squad customization. - Somewhat limiting character creator, in comparison to DAI.
The objectively bad things. - DRM. - Microtransactions. - P2P MP. - Lots of Exclusive/Promo content and Preorder content. - Bugs.
The questionable. - Animations quality. - Performance. (DX11, seriously? lol) - NVIDIA GameWorks. :srs:

True... that's the reason why I read, watched and played most of my entertainment in the original language (mostly English) for decades now, although the dubbing has become better in places. Up to the 80'ies and 90'ies, German dubbed movies regularly had falsely translated or outright made up dialogue in them... ...but yea, back to MEA, I guess.

And interesting, though, because it exposes how relative reviews are.

I kinda disagree? Imo, most movies are just as good in german, and for some reason Disney movies are often better. Same with TV shows, though cartoons are often worse (Steven Universe and Gravity Falls, anyone?). In contrast, shows like Dexter and most of all Scrubs are much, MUCH better in german. Videogames are mostly rubbish though. Bioware especially has a lousy dub track record. I tried playing Inquisition in german and wanted to rip my ears off. And german FemShep is terrible. Also, german FemHawke is in every german dub for anything ever, which is really really distracting. ^^

The objectively bad things. - DRM. - Microtransactions. - P2P MP. - Lots of Exclusive/Promo content and Preorder content. - Bugs. DRM and Microtransactions are absolutely not objectively bad features. MP is nothing like P2P. Exclusive promo content are non-existent and there's far less pre-order content in ME:A when compared to ME2 and ME3.

I knew gamespot was going to rate it low. I watched their content on it, and aside from clearly knowing very little about the original trilogy, they also didn't seem to be the least bit interested in this new installment. In fact, I find Gamespot's staff highly annoying and shitty reviewers all-around.
It doesn't help that what they like in games I don't care for, and what I like in games they don't seem to care for. So I ignore their reviews all the time.
IGN is a much better reviewer with more knowledgeable staff. A 7.7 from Dan Stapleton (who knows what's he doing) is definitely painful for a series accustomed to high 80's and 90's. But I can totally understand that score, even if I'd rate it a little higher.

MEA reviews tell me just one things: many reviewers didn't want another BioWare Mass Effect game (with better combat and more content). They wanted something else.
That's like not helpful at all...

Huh... no, I doubt that. What they wanted was a Mass Effect on par with - or better then - the trilogy that also fulfills the latest industry AAA standards, which have considerable spiked in the last couple of months, I might add. While I personally don't care for HZD or Zelda, one has to acknowledge this console generations quality standards are climbing profoundly right now...

The Meltdown would be on a scale not seen since ME3's ending. Not a chance, this is nowhere near on ME3 endings debacle level. Maybe not. Maybe. Who really knows? We're you there? That fateful day when Bioware Social Network went full crazy? It was Brilliant.

^ It sounds just as bad as standards with looks. "If you don't look a certain way, you're not wanted." I'm personally not like that. It doesn't matter, as long as I enjoy playing the game/story. If a game looks better than another game, then I'll say it, but I won't condemn the game over it, because it still looks good. For example, I hate what The Division has become, but it still looks great, though not as good as others.

I prefer regional server-based multiplayer, the connection will be more consistent compared to P2P MP. The downside; the devs will need to deploy and maintain the more servers.. which means additional cost maybe?

As for Ubisoft, pretty much all their games are so crap that you don't need reviews to know they will be medicore at best. I disagree. Ubisoft is one of the rare big studios that tries new things and succeeds. Latest example, For Honor. They make interesting, sometimes unconventinal stuff, like Far Cry with cavemen. I also like them for that.
