In a lot of the 'bad' reviews I've read, there's a bit too much mention of Shepard. I've even read one that mentioned the story wasn't as 'big' as in the trilogy.
I don't see how you could have missed that Bioware didn't want to make such a 'big' story again. Or that this wasn't going to be Mass Effect 4.

^ Not surprising, its the long-awaited followup to one of the most beloved series in recent memory, if not ever. It was pretty much inevitable that ME:A was going to suffer from the weight of expectation. One reason why I'm not sweating the early reviews.

I spent nearly all of my time with the trial in Multiplayer, but I'll say that after 1,500+ hrs of multiplayer in ME3, what I've played here is much better than 3.
As for single player, can't say much since I wanted to save that for my purchase, but I'm not too worried about what the pre-release buzz is or what reviewers are saying so far. I know I'll enjoy the hell out of the multiplayer, and I'm sure I'll still find enjoyment with the single player. Even if it is DA:I in space, DA:I wasn't the disastrous experience that some people claim it was, IMO. Even though it had problems, it was still a good game and enjoyable--I think that people just have higher expectations when it comes to Bioware. They're "B-Game" is still better than most developers "A-Game."

Yes, I'm about 5 hours into it after having done the full access trial... instead of me just hammering on about my experiences... if you'd like ask me any question that is about as non-spoilery as you could attempt. And I'll do my best to answer... I was a huge ME1 fan. I still remember RENTING the hardcopy of the game from blockbuster back in the old days... and I was blown away by it. ME1 still remains my favorite in the series. Also I probably have about 8 or 9 full playthroughs that include all the DLCS for all 3 of the OT games.

I love it and I'm a ME1 hardcore fan.
I suppose it depends to what do you consider the best ME of the original trilogy. For me ME1 was always the best. I never liked too much ME2 and was ok-ish with ME3. People complain about the open-world but that's precisely why I liked ME1 in the first place. Sure it's not perfect but I would NEVER go back to ME2 and ME3 shooting galleries and close environments. Open world also revitalized the combat adding verticality and making sniping remotely interesting. I'd suggest to buy the game and see it for yourself. If you liked ME1 you'll love ME:A.
I'm confident ME:A is a good fundation to which BW can build on.

Yup despite its flaws mass 1 is my favorite as well as this new one. I'm a big fan of huge open worlds and don't mind fetch quests honestly

It's a total dissapointment when it comes to story, dialogue, characters and combat.
Not a single character is memorable. There is simply no characters that you click with, there is no conflict, personal issues to solve, their own goals, everything is perfect and everyone gets together minus the Asari and then again even that isn't serious. There's no Garrus chasing Dr. Heart, Tali looking to find something to bring back to the Flotilla, Liara trying to prove herself an adult, Wrex and his people, no issue of similar severity is raised.
Dialogue is changed as if to copy Fallout 4's ridiculous 4 ways to say yes. With their attempt to not make choices binary, they made them unary, Ryder is bland a character as it gets. Whereas Elder Scrolls have rich and deep lore to cover for and explain away a blank slate character Bioware doesn't have that and didn't put effort into that. Why is this teen now in charge of 100 000 people and colonization of a new Galaxy and not Cora or someone else? Well because blood relations, your dad did all this things, surely knowledge and skills are genetical.
The classes lost their meaning. The ability to switch classes out mid game and just change them whole, becoming all classes in one character is ridiculous, lore and immersion breaking. The game devolves to simple number crunching instead of playing a class. There's this high armor enemy that would be hard for addepts to deal with, ah well, just change into engineer, blast him with incinerate and cryo then change to soldier for some damage extra and then switch back to adept once it's done to be cool. Stupid, senseless and further prevents attachment to a character you're playing.
It's as if Bioware tried to create Skyrim in a singleplayer MMO world with MMO quests and questline and then served it to us with no explanation on what and why aside from "Welp" and a shrug

I played 1 & 2 many many times and 3 twice and I was really enjoying the trial, and expect that I'll continue to enjoy it when it is released in Scotland on Thursday. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned by all the negativity, but not enough to put me off playing. I do puzzle a bit about the game being called out for cringeworthy dialogue because as far as I can tell that's been there from ME1. Maybe the absence of the massive threat from the reapers from the story makes these things more glaring?? After ME3 I was not at all happy, and had seriously considered not buying this game. I still completely disagree with some of the decisions they made with ME3, but that was because it was a conclusion to a series. At the time I could see that it was objectively a good game in itself, but judged it to be and abysmal conclusion to the series (imho) and a total let down. Andromeda is a new start and should be judged as that, and I do get the impression that OT baggage is unhelpfully permeating many reviews, I hope I'm not wrong.
