I wont lie to you guys. I always go Renegade, just because it contains an assault rifle upgrade.
Yes, I value that 10% more damage over those worker's lives.

I've gone through ME2 using an assault weapon without upgrading it with no problem when facing enemies

Does that mean I fire one more shot than you? If I get through the game without having the upgrades, why would I waste the effort to get them? If someone is having a hard time getting through the game, maybe if playing on insanity.

I always play on insanity but don't have trouble getting through the game with or without the upgrade. I just like having all the damage upgrades. More so than the heavy weapon one I get for doing the paragon route. It's also worth noting that I don't really RP much in Mass Effect, because I feel the game was too restrictive in that area.

Lair of the Shadow Broker at least helps off-set that cost even if you went the other route. Link: masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Upgrade_Guide#Assault_Rifle_Upgrades

I always go the paragon route on this mission. The way I see it is that Vido is really just a run-of-the-mill gang leader who Zaeed has been pursuing for 20 years. In addition, Zaeed sucks Shepard into agreeing to do the mission by saying that the mission is about liberating the refinery workers from being used as slave labor. So, there is no way even my most renegade Shepard is able to justify allowing those workers to burn just to catch Vido immediately for Zaeed. Zaeed will likely get other opportunities to catch Vido.
Shepard also needs to send the message to Zaeed that Shepard is the one who is in command, not Zaeed. Letting Zaeed pursue his own revenge over his own stated purpose for the mission would undermine Shepard's authority regardless of Zaeed's ultimate "loyalty." The commander must be the one in command.
In addition, I'm rue to forfeit the 30,000 credits of Elfell Ashland funding that one loses by going the renegade route.

If Shepard chooses to save the workers and gains Zaeed's loyalty, he will mention getting Vido when talking with him at the refugee camp after dealing with the Volus Ambassador in ME3

While I do not like being passive about Zaeed going off and doing his own thing under my command, I can put it aside for the moment and address it more seriously later. And, I have to admit, it was pretty brilliant. Gotta fight fire with fire sometimes, even literally. So I stuck with our primary objective.
Also, there are a dearth of Renegade actions in ME2 that are actually pragmatic in nature like this one. I'm usually going Paragon by default in this game because of that. I did want Shepard to take that sort of action a few times rather than finishing uber-Paragon.

Vido Santiago may be a CEO of a major galactic PMC, but compared to Reapers, Geth, and Collectors; all of whom have made it personal for Shepard, Vido's just a small fish swimming in a sea of giants.

I just finished this a little while ago. I did it early this time and I couldn't get the Paragon check. First time that's happened. I guess I went pretty heavy renegade for this part of the game so far (I plan to end up fairly neutral).
I'm leaving like this though. I guess he'll die in ME3.

Lots of the renegade are very much not me and therefore a challenge to actually play. I wanted to play a full trilogy renegade of ME but never pulled it of. In a way I understand myself but I have a opportunitity to actually "roleplay" and am sad I can't muster the courage to do so. However I did both the Zaeed options with multiple minor change outcomes.
I have played the whole trilogy but as far as I understand it all, the people that just play ME3 have a totaly different game due to not having made previous choises.
In a way I find it sad by playing ME trilogy countless times (+10) I mostly play the same way and actually miss a lot of the game posabilities.
On the other hand you can read it on the forum because there are defenitilely people who are not shy of exploring every nook and cranny paragon/renegade included. And yes, I envy them a bit because life is not about being a hero/rescue fantasist only.
I think being a "observer" of oposite personality can be grand to do, but that is the rub isn't it! How many times on or of stage am I an observer?

You might end up liking it At the very beginning I was reluctant to do many Renegade things. I started my 3rd Shepard to specifically try out things I hadn't done before. Best run so far for me. Ever since I try to still do different things to get different dialogues and it's really worth it!

Either Zaeed's convo is bugged in ME3, or was cut. Watch this vid to see what he really had to say about his time after ME2, it's all restored. There is a version on youtube that was linked on BSN, I saw it ages ago, where he mentions tracking Vito down. Every one I've looked at however has a world state with Vito dead, so I'm not finding it...

Having those various cut dialogues and a revamp of Priority Earth would be great for a remaster.

Zaeed's cut dialogue from ME3 They really should make footage of our crew fighting at the end of ME3. Ehhh what a missed opportunity.
