I don't really mind the facial animation as much as... Well everything else really. Why do the armors look like cartoons? Why is the environment so lacking in detail? I hope it's just someone playing on low settings, because that looks awful.
honestly I'm wondering how much of an issue is down to the lighting.
For all of its faults, ME2 was perhaps the most gorgeously (and actually captured that elusive cinematic feel) of any game BioWare has released.
There's a number of lightning issues in game. Like Ryder has some blue lines under their eyes, mouth like there are some blue light beneath their faces but you're out outside in the middle of the desert. Also some rooms are very dark and the cutscenes as well but if you angle the camera properly you get lightning after a while.
The game lacks polish, last night I had the Ryder male voice trigger during a main quest scene playing female Ryder. Still fun so far though.
It is shocking how far this game has been downgraded.
I'd love to know what went on behind the scenes, because the leaked footage has much more detailed character models, better animation, and better lighting. The game on the right is the one I'd want to play. What happened to it?

It is a bit weird...I think in general from a performance standpoint, some games use darker settings overall to help the game perform better in terms of framerates. Hard to say what happened, because even the Krogan model suffered a downgrade in terms of visuals. Maybe that build on the right which had lighting and shader effects caused some performance issues in that overall build and the final build (while good) lacks the lighting and character details from the 1st build, but it it allows the game the run more smoothly?....who knows...
Knowledge, wisdom and understanding. These are the basic fundamentals of life.
If you can't amaze them with brilliance, baffle them with bulls**t.

I haven't gotten to this scene in the game so can't really say for certain, but low settings seem plausible. Based on my 15 hours in the game so far (PC, everything at highest settings) the textures and lighting have been way better than what is seen on the left.
yes, compare the lighting in Sloane Kellys place in the december video we got to the place when you actually get there, its like they downgraded it and so the textures look like they dotn belong. Wtf?
Oh god.. I watched that video last year and I remember thinking how good it looked (the lighting and the face animation especially). And after I saw the final gameplay footage from ME:A I had completely written that video of as a aprils fools joke thinking it must have been fake. And now when you put it up here side by side it makes me sad. It was from the actual game? What happened?? Did the face animators get treated like shit within the company and decided to leave and take all their work with them leaving BioWare to try to desperately animate them from scratch a few months before release on top of needing to remake the faces too? Did the same thing happen with the lighting/shadows/vfx/plume people and left bioware without any proper lighting? Did the same happen to the armor artists leaving BioWare with clown costume level krogans? Perhaps someone accidentally deleted half the game a few months before release and they had to try to build everything up again from the resources that still remained but the time wasn't there anymore. It looked so beautiful.. really like a true dark Mass Effect setting. I have just finished playing the game for 12 hours straight and I'm enjoying it. But now I genuinely need to know what the hell happened within BioWare for something to look so good in 2014 to becoming a completely different visually unpolished game like this in 2017.
Did the animations get patched? Even Addison looks better than previews from last week. Everything I've played so far looks great. The details look great in 4k and I haven't had any poor performance issues using boost mode on the PS4 pro.
I pleasantly surprised how all the issues stated in the reviews are not really present or at least bothering me

can you post a picture maybe or a video.
It's not a significant difference. Maybe I just don't notice the bad animations because it looks clear and smooth. I'm streaming if you want to check it out. projectpat06

Same thing that always happens? That would never run on a console (nor probably the average pc); people have unrealistic expectations of their hardware.

I'm in the same boat. Addison looks fine on my PC and not like in the videos/gifs on the internet. Hell, I kept saying that the reasons the eyes popped out in the gifs is because they didn't have eyeliner (and eyelashes), well everyone has eyeliner and eyelashes in my game.
For those mentioning the difference in textures and lighting... It is more than obvious that the footage on the left is from a pc with the lowest graphic settings enabled.
The difference in facial animations though...

Remember the footage on the left? It leaked on the date embedded in the video but the footage is actually from 2014 according to a NeoGAF poster the same time as the leak dropped. It's a portfolio from a VFX artist (who was maybe fired or laid off from Montreal and thus had an axe to grind: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1354014&page=1)
The significance is the facial animation on the guy in the old footage. That is clearly using the same kind of face-capture performance tech they used in the infamous "Ugly Sara" TGA trailer but it looks rather good compared to the emotionless guy in the final game. What could've happened? I have no idea.
My wild guess is that it's linked to the "lead facial animator" that left in feb 2016. I don't know about how these kinds of things work in the industry (let alone EA/BioWare) but in a former company I was part of we had contracts where each of us had to sign that our contributions and assets to the project was entitled to the project or ourselves, which was decided in our own little democracy. I re-emphasize this is a loose guess but what if BioWare had to forcibly take out almot all facial animations and redo them from scratch at some point? (they'd have to when they iterate the dialogue regardless, but without the facial animation lead...)
Thoughts?
Preview footage hasn't used actual gameplay since Spore, and possibly even earlier
This is not that type of "preview" footage.

Way too much of a stretch.
Like... there's a significant difference not between the animations, but with the framing - the face of the guy here is either obscured or far away compared to direct closeup on Sara.
This has nothing to do with quality of facial animations. This has everything to do with scene direction.
And I'm not saying that MEA facial animations don't have their problems - but the issue with many of scenes in MEA is not animation per se but camera and scene direction. Many games - which includes Witcher 3 and DAI - hide deficiencies in animations by pulling camera away, changing angle or obscuring faces. And in many scenes where camera *could* be pulled away in MEA, it lands squarely on the face or is just way too close to it.

A lot of truth in this, ME2 was truly the king of good scene direction. Although I wouldn't say it's "everything" to do with scene direction. I'm 25 hours in and there are some truly horrific Ryder animations that no elegant shadows or smart framing could hide. Would've been nice to see them try though. Even some static poses look daft.
It's a mix of problems for sure. Another is that the face textures are hyper realistic and the eye textures are cartoonish. The two just don't work together. Not to mention that a lot of the cinematics are just badly written, with confusing tone and failed comedy. Think of the cringe that was that game of cards with the whole squad from DA:I.
It's a truly bizarre result. Great game besides that though.
