I just finished up my ten hour preview and I have been trying to see what people have been saying both positive and negative about Andromeda including people here and some of the reviews and I wonder if the problem lies at the feet of what BioWare was trying to do. I remember them saying "exploration of Mass Effect 1, characters of Mass Effect 2, and combat of Mass Effect 3" and that does feel like it was accomplished in the game, but I wonder if other areas wound up being sacrificed intentionally or unintentionally to try and meet those pillars in the game.
Going back and replaying the older BioWare games including Jade Empire it always feels like the focus of those games is the story element and the other aspects of the game fall into place during the development of the story. With Andromeda it seems to be an important part as well, but they were also trying to incorporate what people were saying were their favorite parts of the first three games so instead of having a story and including elements that were part of the narrative they were trying to fit elements into the narrative.
Now does that mean maybe BioWare should try and not listen as much to what people are saying about the games and go back to the older development processes they had instead of trying to improve upon prior games with what is being said as feedback to them? I know right now I am a little nervous that the feedback is going to cause them to try and make changes based on what people are saying and not the root cause of the issue.
What do you folks think?
