Have they said anything about Pax West? I'll have to check the ME Twitter again. They've said a number of times now that they're not going to show anything more before the fall, so I wouldn't expect anything from Pax (that wasn't, say... a demo behind closed doors). If there's a demo behind closed doors. Let' hope for a leak then.

I can't see it taking five years 'til the next DA. I know they've got the Secret IP, but come on! DAI was their most successful game, right? Why would you wait that long for a sequel? DAI came out three years after DA2.

So my gut tells me that's too ambitious a date to meet, especially since it looks like it's going to be some months yet before they can even ramp up the team. I would be very surprised to see the game out before late 2018 and can easily see it taking longer depending on how ambitious they are with it.

Add to the fact that they're now two things they're not doing - converting to Frostbite and developing the game on 5 platforms. In fact with both MEA and new IP using Frostbite, even with new title being put between DA and MEA I expect for things to be more streamlined and therefore faster.

You are right, they built a lot of additions into Frostbite for DAI. And those additions will undoubtedly be helpful down the line, but I don't see updates to the engine as something that ever ends. It's like, "Okay... we built these 10 things into Frostbite for DAI, now we can build the next 10 things for DA4."

The next gen consoles are coming out next year (PS Neo: likely early next year / XB Scorpio: late next year). Will the New IP be built to take advantage of them...? Likely the Neo, but who knows for Scorpio (which is a very big upgrade) as it may come out right around the New IP's release. With DA4's time-frame, it will definitely take advantage of them and my guess is that will be the game to feature the next "big jump up" in features/quality. I also think, regardless of the features they add or don't, they will likely spend more time fleshing out secondary quests and the like as that seems to be one of the biggest requests. So I believe whatever time they have saved with the move to (and familiarity with) Frostbite, will just be eaten up in other ways (coupled with the fact it's going to be a while yet before they even get a full studio up and running on it).

Oh, I agree that the improvements arebn't going to suddenly stop with MEA and new IP. But improving something is different from building it from the scratch or learning new engine, like in case of DAI. I also assume that improvements on, say, secondary quests or explorations also didn't stop with DAI and continues with each title. All in all their franchises aren't that different between one another. You can even tell, with limited information we have, that MEA in many respects will resemble DAI, or at least they seem to have built upon what they've learned when working on DA - and later I expect them to build on what they've learned through MEA and new IP. So while there's no doubt that there will be new things to have time and resources eaten up, I don't think it'd realistically take as much time as it did before. Especially if you count into that the fact that they seem to have tightened the cooperation between different BW studios. After all Descent hasn't been worked on in Edmonton - it was developed in Austin, which included writing for it.

Also, they did have postings for over 20 positions in various aspects of game development earlier this year (March or April, I think?) That's a lot of people to hire in one fell swoop. I feel that it's likely they did that to decrease production time and/or be able to work on three games at once. I'm speculating heavily here, obviously - but that's a lot of people to hire within a very short time frame.

Once DAI was concluded, they let all their contract people go, so I'm sure they had plenty of vacancies to fill.

For comparison, my company has about 150 employees, and we currently have 12 openings posted. So no, in my opinion, 20 postings is not unusually high for a company their size.

Developing a new IP takes a lot more time than making the next game in an established series. The first time I heard about DA was 2004, and then it was 5 years after that until DAO came out. I'd say what comes first is completely in the air at the moment. They have a plan of course, but we have no way to see it. There appears to be a significant lull in game production though. If I look at the games they made in the past since ME1, that would be ME1 in 2007, DAO in 2009, ME2 in 2010, DA2 in 2011, ME3 in 2012 and DAI in 2014, more than two years between games, as it will be between DAI (2014) and ME1 (almost certainly 2017), that's unprecedented.

My bet continues to be MEA in 2017, Sekrit New IP in 2018 and DA4 in 2019. I don't see any way DA4 could be out before late 2018 at the absolute earliest - we're more than half way through 2016 and it's not in full production yet.
I have my fingers crossed we're getting that rumored strategy game to keep the franchise in the public consciousness and tide us over, though.

Developing a new IP takes a lot more time than making the next game in an established series. The first time I heard about DA was 2004, and then it was 5 years after that until DAO came out. I'd say what comes first is completely in the air at the moment. They have a plan of course, but we have no way to see it. There appears to be a significant lull in game production though. If I look at the games they made in the past since ME1, that would be ME1 in 2007, DAO in 2009, ME2 in 2010, DA2 in 2011, ME3 in 2012 and DAI in 2014, more than two years between games, as it will be between DAI (2014) and ME1 (almost certainly 2017), that's unprecedented. It definitely takes longer to produce games in general this generation.

Also, they did have postings for over 20 positions in various aspects of game development earlier this year (March or April, I think?) That's a lot of people to hire in one fell swoop. I feel that it's likely they did that to decrease production time and/or be able to work on three games at once. I'm speculating heavily here, obviously - but that's a lot of people to hire within a very short time frame. I read somewhere once that Bioware has around 800 employees. For comparison, my company has about 150 employees, and we currently have 12 openings posted. So no, in my opinion, 20 postings is not unusually high for a company their size. Okay, yeah, they still have a lot of postings open. I don't check their job posting page all that often because I am not looking for a job with them, but until March/April this year, whenever I had checked, there usually wasn't much. A 2012 article mentions that BioWare has 400 or so Canadian employees, but I'm not sure whether the journalist meant 'employees in Canada' or 'employees at all three studios with Canadian citizenship' since a number of long-time Edmonton studio staff are from the USA, and I think it's likely a bunch of Canadians are in Austin. Back in 2010, another article mentioned that the Montreal studio was doubling in size from 27 to 55 employees. I'm having trouble finding anything recent and reputable about number of employees, but I think 800 might be an overestimate. The wiki page on BioWare states 800, but the reference link is broken so I'm not sure how much I trust that figure.
