... Not to suggest that this will exist or not in whatever it is we're working on ( ) but I thought I'd drop a comment - I seldom get to reply in this thread because everyone just goes on about the story and all the mechanics/gameplay threads are stale . Heh... Yep, we're in a wee bit of a lull right now. Gonna need to come up with something - like a gameplay topic of the week. Hmm... Gameplay topic suggestion: will we be able to throw nugs at enemies? Also - will they explode?

There is very little there I disagree with. Only a couple of quibbles: 1) I don't care about New Game+. I'm not opposed to it. But I don't think it's vital or even important. 2) I rather like the Deep Roads. Same. I thought adding the Golden Nug was a good idea, but I don't think NG+ is important either. And I also like the Deep Roads, but I wouldn't mind seeing more environment variety and biodiversity underground. Apart from that, I pretty much agree with the rest their points as well. I agree, I thought the golden nug was an excellent solution for those who wanted ng+

I'd actually forgotten about how much more involved Origins's tactics system was (clearly I need to replay it soon), but it was fun to play around with and made more sense than Inquisition's vagueness. One note on the "Companions Who Disagree" request: I love that companions can disagree with the PC. I like that companions can disagree with each other. What I don't want to see happen is a repeat of the Anders-Fenris Hatefest of DA2. In isolation or with Varric, they were decent characters (my Hawke even romanced Fenris), but they were so obnoxious to each other that as a player I ended up hating both of them. Note related to above note: A big cast of companions is great for banter, but it's also great for class/skill diversity. I had to put up with Anders because he was the only companion in the game who could heal, but a larger number of companions to choose from makes it less likely the player feels stuck with a character they can't stand. (I almost always play healers myself, but I decided to force myself out of my comfort zone for DA2. Never again. Healer/Barrier Mage for life!)

(When you actually get to hear it...looking at you DAI) I don't hate any of the companions , although there are some I like a great deal more than others.

I'd like them to return to banter that triggers in areas where you are not potentially going to have to fight enemies whilst trying to listen to the latest bit of conversation. In DAO banter mainly happened in town areas when you were just walking around. Same with DA2. I used to go out shopping in Kirkwall with certain characters just so I could hear what they had to say for themselves. Then in DAI not only did banter not trigger for absolutely ages but when it did, invariably it was just before same random bear or bandit attacked us, so I was left with a choice of actually defending myself or dodging around straining to hear the conversation because once triggered, never repeated.
Also important conversation triggers with PC not tied to some area actually off the main path. It annoyed me the conversation with Solas about his "run in" with Dalish only occurred if you go way off track up river. First run I was conscious of the need to get up the path quickly so it didn't even occur to me to go up the frozen river. Then when I innocently asked him about his views on elven culture in Haven he was all snarky with me because I was a Dalish and I had no idea what I had done to make him like that since I had been nothing but friendly and interested in sharing ideas.

I don't mind them bringing back dog as long as I can ignore it if I wish. This means not having it in my face in my quarters like the stupid pyjak in MEA. If the pyjak had been anywhere else in the ship, I might have bothered to actually acquire it. The only reason I put up with the mabari in the previous games is because they're more intelligent than your average dog (can actually understand most of what you say). Aside from that, I didn't miss it in Inquisition. However, here are DG's remarks on the subject:

I have to say I started to dislike the location only banter in DAO. Last time I played DAO, I was in Lothering and had just recruited Leliana. I had to do some different side quests (killing Spiders, then bandits etc) and Every. Single. Time. I would cross the bridge Alistair and Leliana had to chat! I literally shouted at my PC "Shut up!" As for banter, I thought that the IDEA was sound. We have this great, big open world to explore, off linear paths, so I thought it made sense to do it that way. It felt more natural and organic -- people trudging along, getting in little spats, seems real. There also ARE location specific banters, such as Dorian remarking about Tevinter baths near a waterfall in the Emerald Graves. However, the implementation was lacking and I don't think it was really made for how people actually play the game. ~15 minutes between any banter firing is just too great a period of time, especially if a player is only going to be in a given area for a single quest and then leave. 15 minutes is actually quite a lengthy bit of time if you head right to a specific location and start fighting (banter doesn't fire during combat). Let's say you have the Hinterlands objective to clear out that bandit fortress in the southern area. Once you load into the Hinterlands, you may want to fast travel to the nearest camp. Then you run down there relatively quickly and start fighting. You can clear out that place in about 10 minutes or so. Then you leave without having heard any banter. The timer resets if you leave that particular map. If you've been exploring the Hinterlands for about 12 minutes and a banter is going to fire shortly, but you're done so you leave and head to the Storm Coast, your timer is reset, so it may end up being nearly 30 minutes before you hear banter. The same thing may happen with your time on the Storm Coast, and before you know it, it's been over an hour since you've heard any banter at all just because of the way you've decided to use your time. In addition, there was the possibility that, instead of a party banter, you would get a random remark about the location, such as Dorian saying, "Finally, some humidity!" on the Storm Coast; that's fun too, but not what most players are hoping to hear. So it seems like that period of waiting was for nothing since you just got a remark. And of course there were simply bugs that were never worked out (checking off all the codex or quest journal entries??), as some players have always had banter issues. When I play, I never use fast travel. I also don't use a mount, so my party is always about with me. I actually keep a timer nearby and keep track of the time between banters. If my 15 minute window is coming up, I stop what I'm doing and just wait for the banter or environmental remark. Once it fires, I move on. It works out because of the way I play (I purposely choose to not using fast travel or use mounts {party disappearing} for immersion reasons), but I, nor anyone else, shouldn't have to work out a strategy to hear banter. The Trespasser method was kind of nice, but also immersion breaking. While having the guaranteed banter was nice, clicking on those orbs didn't feel right and I didn't care for it. I gave it a pass because it was the final DLC and also there was other weird shit going on, so an orb for banter wasn't so bad in comparison. Mods like More Banter remove the chance yes/no factor and force the banter to fire (unless in a loading screen, after which you will get the banter). I think this is closer to how it should have been to begin with. What I think would be good is a combination of both methods. Even in open world environments, there are certain locations that are likely to be passed by the player. These can be used to have perhaps one or two banter triggers per map. Then the rest of the time, while the player is roaming about, the DAI method can be used, with perhaps less randomness than originally designed.

I hardly ever got banter, even though I walked everywhere and didn't fast travel. And if by some miracle my companions started talking, it was usually just as we were about to be attacked by bears. I'd rather hear the same banter over again and again, than not hearing it at all. DA2 seemed to have the best method for hearing banter. The 15 min timer thing seems so arbitrary and not really necessary. Sometimes in DA2, the banter would start as soon as you entered somewhere new and that game never felt so quiet as DAI. The banter is another way to get to know your companions better and if I'd had more banter, I might have begun to like some characters more.

- For those interested in diving a little into the technical side of Frostbite... Sébastien @sebhillaire My SIGGRAPH 2016 PBS presentation "PB Sky,Atmosphere&Cloud Rendering in Frostbite" extended course notes are online! www.ea.com/frostbite/news/physically-based-sky-atmosphere-and-cloud-renderingTalk by Sebastien Hillaire at SIGGRAPH 2016 in the Physically Based Shading in Theory and Practice course.
Video games are becoming more and more demanding in terms of visual quality and dynamism. Open world games may require lots of visually dynamic elements, such as time of day lighting and real-time evolving weather. The dynamic and often global nature of these elements make them difficult to simulate and render in real time. Sky, atmosphere and clouds are the three main components we need to simulate in order to achieve dynamic time of day and weather conditions.
In this document, we present the practical physically-based solutions we have researched and developed for Frostbite to simulate, combine and render these complex and dynamic participating media elements. We present background on volumetric rendering, and then dive into the choices and improvements we have made to render each of these elements, as well as the complex interactions between them. We will also describe how this fits into Frostbite's physically based shading framework as well as how artists visually author each component to achieve their vision. Very purdy pictures, a good thing since I saw the algebra and my eyes began to glaze over... I'm glad they're looking at changing night/day/weather cycle stuff, maybe that's something they can toss into DA4 if it fits the game.

There was one guy on BSN Prime....crimson...something? Pre-release on DA2 and DAI he had nearly monthly threads about were they going to have NG+. So - as I say - some do like it. And whether we like it or not, it could open a discussion about HOW it might work IF it were implemented.

Especially since it should generate discussion about level caps, gear, trials, transferability across classes/characters, known abilities/usable abilities. If you'd like to start a thread yourself - please do, or I'll start on after dinner.

I definitely want to get into a discussion around magic in general, so that sounds like a good topic for the next one. Dealing with healing in general has come up in a few threads already. It's a tough one to weigh in on though as it'll depend on how combat as a whole will be treated in the next game. Also... I've started a thread for NG+: bsn.boards.net/thread/12438/ng-next-dragon-age

I didn't like them besmirching the Shaperate of the Dwarves. The dwarves write important visits down in lyrium (I think) but somehow found it necessary to wipe away the existence of the Titans. So much so that there weren't even hints of titans in DAO or DA2. Unless the Titans are secretly evil, or the modern day dwarven descendents rebels against their benign creators, why the heck would they wipe such a major thing from their history? And wipe it so clean there weren't even myths? Or were Titans made up just for DAI DLC and that's why there isn't a hint of them anywhere else? I don't find that to be "a different perspective." I find it irritating. Could have got amnesia when they got severed from them. I think Dagna is tapping into an unconscious memory when she reads the Fade sample off you, which implies the knowledge is there in her, but she doesn't normally have access to it. Could be the same for all of them. They could all have woken up like Sandal (minus most of the apparent brain damage) in lyrium-lined tunnels one day waaay back, with no clue where/who they were or how they got there. ... I'm just gonna assume that Tom there is being conscientious and avoiding spoilers, shall I? Cus otherwise... yeah.
