Shit hole or not, his lover has a title and holdings there, which for my Lavellan was a pretty big deal. If Dorian is not on good terms with the Inquisitor he calls the south "a freezing shit hole" when sitting in the Winter Palace. I dare say, if Dorian actually passed through Kirkwall, he picked up on the negative vibes in that city that I believe all mages would experience, so he'd likely disparage it based on that alone. I agree that it is probably just Altus snobbery when comparing the rest of Thedas to Minrathous but I would have thought Kirkwall would have a lot of Tevinter architecture bearing in mind their long connection with the city. Yes, but the most striking of that architecture was giant bronze statues of weeping slaves. Followed closely by giant mosaics of weeping slaves. Seriously, Varric needs to melt that crap down, historicity be damned. Maintaining the moniker "City of Chains" so graphically, even though they've been free of Tevinter's rule for centuries, is doing no one's mental health any favors. I love Kirkwall for Hawke and company, but dream honeymoon destination it is not. I wasn't thrilled with Varric's gift of a title and property there for my Inquisitor. I don't have any attachment to Kirkwall at all on that character. In addition, if my Trevelyan Inquisitor is anywhere near the Free Marches, he's going to go visit his family in Ostwick. (I realize this doesn't apply to all Inquisitors, it just fell flat for me.)

I think Varric's gift was one thing that might be more appreciated by a non-human Inquisitor because it gave them a status they didn't have before. Lavallen elf had been a stateless wanderer, Cadash dwarf had been part of the Carta and Adaar was a Vashoth mercenary. None of them had any previous standing in society. Once the Inquisition lost its prominence in the world, the title of Lord Inquisitor would gradually lose its impact as well. So Varric's gift was a way of showing that not everyone was ungrateful for their efforts and would give them their own independent base from which to work in the future, particularly if they wanted to disband the Inquisition. I took the view "you don't look a gift horse in the mouth". Besides which my Lavellan only knew about Kirkwall by reputation and had never actually been there, so didn't necessarily appreciate just how bad the place can seem. I agree they do need to get rid of those awful statues - history be damned!
Trevellyan, on the other hand, as with the human origins in previous games, was from nobility. They might be a younger offspring so not automatically going to inherit the family estate (which a mage was precluded from anyway) but, as was demonstrated with Hawke, the fact you stem from nobility immediately allows you to move among the elite of society and gain acceptance, although having estate and money to back your claim does help. Really they gained very little that they did not already have, even if they were not on good terms with their relatives. Plus they may actually have been to Kirkwall so would know full well what they were getting. So it doesn't surprise me that you and your PC wasn't exactly thrilled by Varric's gift. In the same situation I might have thought it was just another one of his jokes at my expense or that he was going to foist off the day to day running of Kirkwall on to me in the future. There had to be a catch to it somewhere.

Mike Laidlaw @mike_Laidlaw There is no planned ending for DA. There is an evolving plan that tends to look 2 games ahead or so. This I find interesting. So, that whole bit with Sandal in DA2 was looking ahead then. At the same time, I find it some what disappointing that there won't be an "ending".

Peek 🌹 @pk_PDX what happens after DA 30 when we're 10,000 in-fiction years in the future and haven't left the dragon age Mike Laidlaw @mike_LaidlawYou all wanted to go to the Imperium so badly.... pbs.twimg.com/media/DGrXYjbVwAALwl0.jpg I'm not even kidding around, nothing would give me greater joy than if this all turned out to be an elaborate segue into 40K. Someone needs to do right by the Warhammer franchise; might as well be Bioware. ;p To consort with the heretic is to endanger one's purity. But to lie to an Inquisitor is to forfeit one's soul.

So, that whole bit with Sandal in DA2 was looking ahead then. At the same time, I find it some what disappointing that there won't be an "ending". I'm fairly certain they know which direction that ship sails. It's just that they don't keep to some sort of rigid plan concocted a decade ago - and why should they? At some point or another someone may get a better idea and so on. That doesn't mean that everything beyond "2 games ahead or so" is a carte blanche - just a subject of potential change. Mike Laidlaw has already confirmed a few months ago that Arl Foreshadow's notes from DAO actually foreshadow Inquisition. And we know from David Gaider's interview that Inquisition was actually cut in half in terms of how much story progresses forward and that 2nd part of story "still exists and is now in Patrick Weekes' hands".

There had to be a catch to it somewhere. Considering that the gift is given only to befriended Inquisitors the motive of Varric may simply be wanting to play a round or two of Wicked Grace with his friend. I know that Quizzies will likely never have a bond like Hawke and Varric got, given how long these two know one another and what they've been through AND Varric's confessed feeling of intimidation or inadequacy in presence of near-mythical Herald Of Andraste, but their friendship arc actually ended with Varric getting over that nonsense and accepting that Quizzy - in their own words - "just needs a friend" and I think he's there for befriended Inquisitor to be one.

I think the Hawke- Varric bond is one of the best uses of friendship in a video game. It's just really wonderfully done- though I'm not sure how it goes if you play an evil Hawke. In inquisition, I guess my inquisitor was close with Dorian, that'd be probably the closest for me to the Hawke-Varric friendship. But I expect you'd not really have that if you didn't go through time together. Really brings people together, nearly dying in the future.

So, that whole bit with Sandal in DA2 was looking ahead then. At the same time, I find it some what disappointing that there won't be an "ending". I hope that they don't do to future games what was done to DAI. Cutting the plot in half and having that epilogue with Trespasser, a CLEAR setup for the next game, only works if there is going to BE a next game. That is never a guarantee. In general, I prefer a more solid ending, tying up most of the plot threads, in case the series is done. I would consider the base ending of DAI to be a solid ending as far as the Inquisitor is concerned, and I was satisfied after that point even with the post-credit Solas bit. But Trespasser threw all that out the window. Tom @toallu@mike_Laidlaw Why is the Nocen Sea so unatural in shape? Mike Laidlaw @mike_Laidlaw Presumably because it ran out of "cen." Dad Laidlaw strikes again! I think the Hawke- Varric bond is one of the best uses of friendship in a video game. This is definitely a part of my headcanon for their friendship and romance.

Aussie Miriam @sagedufraineCurious: When DAO was made, was the DA ending always known/planned, or has the main plot slowly evolved? @patrickweekes @mike_Laidlaw Mike Laidlaw @mike_Laidlaw There is no planned ending for DA. There is an evolving plan that tends to look 2 games ahead or so. And that is why I think that Dragon Age 5 will be set in Anderfels. Too many plot ties ending up there. But first Tevinter, obviously.

So it kinda makes sense to leave a teaser like that in a DLC, after you had time to guage the success of the base game.

Might be about Hawke. 'Cause it would go on to say "We are the champions, my friends/ And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end..." etc.
