GamesRadar @gamesradar Now that we know Dragon Age 4 is real, here’s what we want to see buff.ly/2gEGFGs Sigh, I fell for their f*cking click bait! I thought there was an official announcement about DA4 being official, but it's the same old trumping up of Alex Kennedy's coy, "I'm not saying what you think I'm saying, but I'm winking while I'm saying it."

Why would they want to see Cass and Varric yet again? Bring in some new blood please.

I was sad to let my 2018 release date dreams go, and am now using "2019" when I talk about it's potential release :/ 2020 is tooooooo far away. I suppose if they gave me a book every 6 months to keep it fresh. I'm hoping for more novels and comics as well. Maybe another DA game from Failbetter, etc. to help tide us over too...? But seeing where they are in development now... yeah, I wouldn't expect to DA4 before 2020.

It took them three years to come out with Inquisition after DA2, the game that critics panned, but it could take six years for DA4 after the well received Inquisition? What is the world? We're in a fantasy RPG drought after getting so many great ones so close together.

But in the end it's not in the number of years between releases, but about where they are in development now and how long things take. TBF, it was closer to 4 years between DA2 and DAI, but I think most will agree that the bar is also set higher now for a great RPG than it was when DAI was released. Personally, I'm perfectly happy to wait for a DA that'll knock it outta the park.

Yea, but they've had all that pesky Frostbite conversion and creating assets for new engine from the scratch and so on that took a lot of their time. And even Witcher 3 took only 3,5 years.

And even Witcher 3 took only 3,5 years. Bear in mind that's 3.5 years of full production time, and with a larger team. DA4 hasn't even ramped up to full production yet. The bulk of their team is on Anthem (~70% the last we heard) with the rest (up until recently) helping out on MEA (which according to Aaryn was not the plan but had to be done). They've only had a small team working in pre-production until MEA wrapped up. So the team has grown, and there's about 15 new job openings, but it's still a relatively small team. The Writer's Pit only started coming together this year. And with the loss of the Montreal studio, and Austin busy on SW, I don't see them truly ramping up until Anthem releases (and it was delayed). It's possible they could be outsourcing a ton of work, but we haven't heard anything as yet. That's why I was wondering if the reason why Mike was taking a trip over to Romania was to get some help from over there. Obviously that would not be the ideal choice though as managing a project like this is tough enough even when everyone is the same building, let alone halfway around the world. But, it's an option. So when you factor all these things together, it makes a 2019 release seem... unlikely unless it's being fast-tracked to meet some EA deadline, and I don't think anyone wants that.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but... Patrick Weekes, for example, will just get to sit there pecking at some words for 4 years before anyone gets round to actually making crap? I mean, isn't that a waste of money to keep him and others on staff if they aren't going to actually utilize what they're doing for years?
This sounds like major inefficiency financially.

It only happens when we romance someone and Cabot relies only what's murmured around the tavern, so it reflects what people think about it. Which is weird if you do one of the romances that doesn't involve sex. All they see is someone goes into the Quiz's quarters for 30 minutes to a couple hours. Isn't Jose's repeat scene cuddling on the Quiz's couch? As much as everyone seems to use the Quiz's bedroom as an office, sometimes, it's still their personal private area these people are being invited into.

On the contrary, it's the just the opposite. Very few games are afforded the opportunity for a lengthy pre-production period, as it would normally mean a large number of expensive devs are idling at the time. But with everyone being busy on other games, they can have a small team take their time, prototype a bunch of things, really nail down the direction the game, etc. Pre-prod is actually the most valuable time in production, so it's definitely a good thing they have this time.

Which is weird if you do one of the romances that doesn't involve sex. Those are rumors. People don't necessarily have to know details But it's a less prude society, so they may assume that romance automatically comes with sexy times. True, though I wish we could dispel those rumors. Which is weird if you do one of the romances that doesn't involve sex. All they see is someone goes into the Quiz's quarters for 30 minutes to a couple hours. No, the culmination scene is cuddling on the couch. The repeatable scene is you and Josie kissing in the garden.

We actually don't know what % of DA devs is working on Anthem right now, don't we? The information we have is fairly old, from what I recall. And from what can be extrapolated from scant hints on Twitter and some other places, the Writers Pit has been working on the project for... 7 months now? 6 months? Outsourcing is more than possible, now that EA is basically fully converted to Frostbite (I recall Mike also mentioned that he may be visiting EA Australia later). Otherwise, how would EA absorb Montreal devs for work on Battlefront 2 with seemingly little fuss? And what would these devs be working once BF2 is done?

I really hope Varric doesn't show up again. I didn't even want him in DAI.

A longer wait doesn't necessarily mean a better game, though, but I would definitely rather DA4 get the time it needs. Still, I can't help but lament the wait. Almost double the production time by 2020 estimates As midnight tea pointed out, the team had a lot added to their work load with the Frostbite engine. Plus any ripple effects DA2's reception and the ending of the Mass Effect trilogy made for the developers. Of course, I should just be thankful DA4 is getting its winks and sly smiles and an estimated release date by fans. Unlike a certain highly anticipated sixth game of a series that is in the back of the priority line.

The whole of EA is working on Frostbite engine now - also, how do you know they don't have people who don't work with the engine directly? We don't know the number of people they have on their pre-production team or when and how it's been expanding in past few years. Also - I'm not a dev, but I'm fairly sure that the process of evaluating what can be done and not doesn't look like the way you described it. After all, they're not working in the vacuum. We know of DA leads zipping around the world and visiting other studios for whatever reasons for years now (the mocap sessions in Vancouver have been happening at least for a year now, if not more), and there's at least one dev involved with design of combat that is visiting this forum and consistently stoking the fires of speculation

As for release, with Anthem coming out Fall 2018 I suspect DA4 will come out around a year later, late 2019 or early 2020.

Where did the article say they wanted Cassandra and Varric again? The only DAI person I saw them say they want back is Solas. I really hope Varric doesn't show up again. I didn't even want him in DAI. Was going by the picture....didn't clickbait on the link Ah, okay.
