Well, the final issue of the Knight Errant comic gets released on the 13th. Unless there is some big revelation, it doesn't appear as if this is going to be some lead-in to the game. I suppose we'll have to wait until a hypothetical novel for that.
Of course, if Vaea, Marius and Tessa (from Magekiller) are all in the next game as optional followers, I'll be pretty peeved at their continuing to use ancillary materials to introduce characters. They can say all they want that these things are optional, but while technically true, there is no debating that reading these types of introductions adds dimension to a character (or events) we see later on in a game, just as it did with Cole and the events in Masked Empire.

I've been assuming the comics are being used to introduce/give backstory to Inquisition agents (or their equivalent) cuz honestly none of these people exactly jump off the page.

(I very much doubt Vaea will be in the game because she's kind of a poor fighter and doesn't like to kill.)

Marius is particularly unfortunate because he's like Fenris 2.0, but human. I like Fenris, but we don't need another one.

Marius is an extremely poor stand-in for Fenris, given that Fenris was occasionally humourous and even charming. Also, he was given a legitimately cool superpower, ie. the lyrium markings. What separates Marius from an extremely skilled swordsman? His lack of personality?
And Tessa is essentially Cassandra/Dorian 2.0, given the recycled views on Nevarran traditions and the shaky relationship with her family.
They're both cardboard cutouts, and I'm dreading their inevitable appearance in Dragon Age 4 because they've been shilled to hell and back.

Actually, fighting mages (very powerful mages who frequently use forbidden arts, like many of those in Tevinter do) with nothing but a skill in swordsmanship and wit is pretty goddamn badass. Marius also displays subtler humor either in comic or short story with Calpernia, but considering that he hasn't been shown that much aside from short comic, I don't think it's fair to judge the totality of his personality and comparing it to fully realized character in the game.

It rather undermines the opening monologue where Tessa waxed on about how ayou "need" someone like a magekiller to deal with mages if said magekiller is just some regular asshole with a sword.

Vints don't have Templars like the South. Magekillers are trained specifically to deal with mages. It's kinda in the name.

Well, he does poison that one lady. Do you need a magekiller to slip someone poison? Is that not something you and I, regular people with an Internet connection, are capable of? Is magekiller just a pretentious title for an assassin? Zevran's training for the Crows was pretty rigourous.

Yes, because regular assholes go against blood mages regularly or get hired by Archon to assassinate some of the most powerful people in Imperium and manage to pull that off... Anyway, I think you may be influenced by protagonist's bias. We mostly see the story from perspective of certified badasses - cutting mages may seem like a regular thing, but from lore perspective it is not.

The archon recruited Marius and Tessa because he needed someone skilled at killing mages AND someone he could disavow if they were caught. (Also, he could quietly dispose of them after the job was done.)
But I don't have a problem with the Archon's logic. It's sound. What I have an issue with is the narrative stating "Magic is a cheat" and "You need badasses like us to deal with mages," and then doing nothing to demonstrate what sets Marius and Tessa apart from any other well-armed asshole.
That's in addition to Magekiller's numerous other faults, like the non-existent storyline, the numerous plot holes, poor characterization and the jammed-in romantic sub-plot with Charter.
And I'm being very vocal about my complaints because I fear the inevitable re-appearance of these two cardboard stand-ups in upcoming Dragon Age products. Just as you do, but for different reasons.
With that, I think I'm going to stop de-railing the Twitter thread and call it a very late night.

Gamasutra: 5 key lessons from the candid game dev book, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels www.gamasutra.com/view/news/304602/5_key_lessons_from_the_candid_game_dev_book_Blood_Sweat_and_Pixels.php2) BioWare designer Daniel Kading on taking responsibility for fixing bad gameplay systemswww.gamasutra.com/db_area/images/news/304602/DragonAge.jpgPlaytesting on an early build of Dragon Age: Inquisition revealed that the combat system was in shambles. But rather than make sudden overhauls or throw it out and start again, Schreier reports that lead encounter designer Daniel Kading got approval to grab the whole development team once a week for an hour of combat playtesting sessions. For these sessions, he and a group of other designers devised a set of encounters and post-playtest surveys that would help them pinpoint the problems. When surveys came back during the first week of Kading’s experiment, the average rating was a dismal 1.2 (out of 10). Somehow, that was comforting to the Inquisition gameplay team. “Morale took an astonishing turn for the better that very week,” Kading said. “It’s not that we could recognize the problems. It was that we weren’t shirking from them.” The experiment worked. Every week they tweaked the combat systems based on playtest feedback, and every week the rating improved. After four weeks, when the experiment ended, the average rating from the surveys was 8.8. TAKEAWAY: When part of a game isn't coming together, it can do wonders for both team morale (and the game itself) to not only recognize that you have a problem, but also turn your full attention to fixing it. Alexis Kennedy @alexiskennedyrefreshingly practical response from daniel_Kading , but all 5 are good www.gamasutra.com/view/news/304602/5_key_lessons_from_the_candid_game_dev_book_Blood_Sweat_and_Pixels.php … Daniel Kading daniel_Kading Honored, & also fortunate to have @hanlsp & his combat design team to push the number up.
