(I was on the testing and customer service side of things, but nine times out of ten when we sent a 'why is this broken???' message up the chain, the answer turned out to be 'because the people who originally made the code built it to do something completely different from the thing we're trying to make it do.')

Yeah, the corpse pit metaphor suggests something old and unpleasant left behind in the foundations. Absolutely. And this applies to all legacy code, not just game code. It's not unusual to go into something like the "handle keyboard key" function, and find 20 lines of useful code with another 500 lines of obsolete stuff, most of which applied to features that had already been removed, maybe 15 years ago. Something that a lot of people don't realize is that code is hand-crafted with manual labor. With all the flaws and quirks you'd imagine from any hand crafts, like woodworking. Nobody has time to go back and rework that old thatching or barrel hooping. And what's worse, if you do try to go in and remove the dead wood, the roof is likely to cave in and all the barrels, even ones you shipped 10 years ago, start springing leaks.

As young as Alistair was (or other characters around that age), a lot of that 'baby fat' is just previous engine's inability to render finer details^^;
