If anyone is playing the Gwent closed beta, there is a feature in that game where you can "mill" (melt) cards for scraps which can be saved up and used to purchase other cards - allowing for some control around the RNG of kegs (packs) from the store while still making you need to play or buy kegs to unlock more cards. In Gwent the system is: 30 scraps to buy a "common", 5 scraps returned when milling 80 scraps to buy a "uncommon", 10 scraps returned when milling 200 scraps to buy a "rare", 50 scraps returned when milling 800 scraps to buy an "ultra rare", 200 scraps returned when milling I used MEA rarity designations in place of the terms used in Gwent, though the principle is the same. The values I assume are based on rarity/chance to get in a keg/pack, so I can't suggest any values for MEAMP because I have no idea of the chance to get URs, rares, uncommons or commons from a pack. In any case you can see the scraps returned from milling are small enough that you negatively impact your collection in order to get the specific card(s) you want (thus incentivising store purchases), but still allows you the option to unlock the odd card you really want if you get several other cards you don't want. I find this a fantastic feature and tbh even with this feature I still donated to that game to buy 60 kegs (given it is free to play in the first place) - pretty much the same cost as the standard edition of MEA, and I don't feel milked or that I have to grind in the same way as I'm being made to feel in MEAMP. Of course in MEA, melting should only apply to fixed items - so not including consumables like boosters. And then each rank of an item costs the same amount to buy and has the same melt value - so if you get a, I don't know... Carnifex III, you can melt each rank to get three times the scrap value (call it "Omni-gel" ) - or only melt one rank to go down to a Carnifex II. It should be flexible. What I'm trying to get at is this would circumvent some of the drawbacks of a purely rng pack system, allowing some level of control to the player while still providing an incentive to buy packs from the store in order to get items faster.

Gears of War 4 does this too, it's actually not a bad system. Imagine if you could melt 255 Explosive Ammos and be able to buy 50 Incendiary Ammos with the scrap return.
