Vid on the Heinrich Himmler Sauer 38H sniper presentation pistol, which was one of the "killstreak rewards" for (German) snipers that scored 100 kills. Who would name a pistol after Himmler? The guy is such a dork... even by Nazi standards.

I suppose that makes sense What's funny is he knew he looked like a dork.. and didn't fit Aryan conceptions either. I could've sworn I heard once that he tried to excuse it by saying he was possessed by an ancient spirit, and the spirit used Himmler's inferior physical form to test people.

I did pick up this book a while back: Fascinating read. I knew Hannibal got screwed by politicians in Carthage, but I did not know how screwed. Apparently at one point, they opted to sent armies to various pieces of land they lost in the first punic war rather than reinforce Hannibal. Some armies were larger than Hannibal's. All of which were decisively beaten. And when he -rather successfully-purged some of the rampant corruption in Carthage, he was effectively ousted when he fled for his life rather than murdered or turned over to Rome. Oh, and he never sieged Rome because he never had the supply lines. Sieging Rome likely would have meant starving outside the walls. Still, a military genius by any standard. I can say that Rome's greatest enemy was its extreme imperialism, liberal life style and its populist-socialist governments... They ended to another series of factors that made Roman Empire economically and Socially non-functional and degenerating. Nerva–Antonine dynasty was its peak and the beginning of its end...

Hilarious Japanese Parade in China. I hope I haven't posted this before. It's not a documentary though. It's of course obvious from the quality, but I thought it meaningful to point out, since we have some children here. It's from a rather new Chinese movie, made just a few years ago.

Hardly. I think privately Goebbels or someone said he hated Christianity. His actions alone should be enough to convince you he wasn't though. Publicly, he was an opportunist. Or.... a politician. “The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.”

Now that was a somewhat...complicated relationship if there ever was one. Both parties eh...a somewhat and I stress that titling apt way to describe this association is...forced cooperation. Note this is for the relationship between the state itself and the Church as a institution. Both parties benefited from cooperation on a few occasions and this mostly had to do with the threat of communism in Eastern Europe during the late 30s and early 40s. Though this was usually on a provisional level nominally endorsed locally, but a handful of overt acts occurred in the lead up to the war. Though the relationship was stressed throughout the lead up and during the war. For example the Catholic Church was accused and was in fact hiding several of the Partisans who murdered Heydrich in Prague. Though I do not believe that the assertion they assisted with enabling the attack that assasinated the man was ever proven, it was overtly more circumstantial then anything but...its stuff like that strained relations truth be told. As much as Germany pushed the Church pushed back evenly. Though again, it was a relationship that both sort of had to endure. The Church's presence throughout Europe was undeniable and often times something that the Germans had to account for.

Vid on the 1934 National Firearms Act(NFA) that regulates things like sound suppressors, short barreled rifles(SBRs) and short barreled shotguns(SBSs).
One has to fill out paperwork with the ATF and pay a $200 tax stamp in order to legally own a pistol with a shoulder stock. >_<

German snipercraft in WWII is one of the themes I'm very interested in, I've read a ton of books about it and even have first hand experience with the weaponry used back then. And this the absolute first time I heard about a gift in form of a signed pistol given to successful sharpshooters. None of the sharpshooters - including the second most successful sharpshooter Sepp Allersberger- ever mentioned getting such pistol and all of them explained their equipment, medals and decorations to great detail. I think those never left the warehouse which - for me- translates into really low collectors value.

Vid on the MG34 and MG42, the two main machine guns used by Germany in the second world war. The '42 would still find use by militaries worldwide after the war with it's descendant the MG-3(whose most noticeable difference is that it was rechambered for 7.62x51 NATO from it's original 7.92x57) and was used in conflicts like the Iran-Iraq war(by Iran).
And here we have a vid on the American M60 machine gun, which was the main U.S MG in the Vietnam war and whose design was influenced by the aforementioned MG42 and by the FG42(an automatic rifle used by German paratroopers in WW2).

Missed my point. In the video, that is not the original M60 machine gun used during the Vietnam war. M60E4/Mk43 came later. After the war.
