Same sex romance boycott discussion

And so it continues...first Thane, then Cullen, now Jaal.


Anyway, boycott is going too far. You won't convince them you want more m/m content, you will convince them you don't want Mass Effect anymore. And I love Mass Effect, despite some of it's flaws.

I can understand if it's 1 reason out of many (I myself am highly disappointed over how the girls look as a superficial reason) not to get the game.

But seriously ...... At best you will get to watch like maybe 20 minutes worth of that gay talk and that steamy action. You're boycotting the game j for that reason alone?

Long time lurker, first time poster - I asked my friend (who is gay and games like I do) if this is a thing and I guess it really is.. he's aware of at least three other buddies who are doing this boycott thing.

Personally, I think a boycott is going too far, but he did make a good point... if I had to play as a gay character (especially in a series known for carrying your character/choices forward for multiple games), would I resent having to deal with gay content when it's not my thing... would I be frustrated there wasn't more content to suit my preferences. I have to admit, I kind of see his point....

I guess I'm surprised this is even an issue... Bioware had a huge success with DAI and it had stuff for everyone... including gays. Wondering why they reversed course on the ME series after that success?

Entitlement: 3 fleshed out romances and 2 flings catered for straight men "SHE IS SO UGLY AND BUTCH AND MAKE IT SO WE CAN CUSTOMIZE THE UGLY FEMALES MAKE THE HOT LESBIAN STRAIGHT"
Not entitlement: 1 gay male romance with half of the content of everyone else and a fling that doesn't even count for the achievement. "Why did you tease us about this character only for them to be straight? Why is nothing about that character as unique as everyone else? Why does he have less content than everyone else? Why tease us with this for months only to give us just... this?"

And you know what? Not a bad idea.

Oh and I'd like to clarify my earlier position on Jaal.

If he was earlier designed or at least strongly considered to be bi, I do say make it happen if its technically feasible at all.

If he wasn't, and the lines were clearly incidental, then don't.

I do refute those who say "Well he seems so written straight now, why would you change his orientation?" - do they say the same about Kaidan? Would they have liked that gone?

That's a little extreme, but still.

That said, Kaidan WAS wonky. He WAS an insert, even if to a comfortable enough extent to me.

The bigger issue isn't Jaal. Sure I'd like to have that option, ever since I found out about the dataminded lines and the concepts of the Angaran, but okay.

Its how it seems that m/m romance with proper content (squadmate, relatively same amount, tasteful sex scene like a bunch of others, able to complete paramour type achievements with only their orientation) don't seem to be just 4th in place for dev priorities, but 5th...6th.....10th...... Amazing . I could say f/f is at least 3rd, but m/m? Yeah, Bioware's so inclusive - so why does it feel like the door's open for me to leave any time? (in this regard if taken in isolation, I mean)

Like dude, I know some Montreal developers - are they this bro and I didn't realize it? What's up with this? I actually want an answer. I don't think I've been this offended by any of this stuff in all my time of knowing about Bioware. I'll try not to take offense, but damn.

Even in the case of 'well content has to be prioritized', we know the answer then. M/M has the clearly least priority. It matters significantly less. And if they come out with that, alright. But stop the LGBT flag waving. You don't care about that beyond corporate sloganing and token resources. (Not talking to specific devs!!! Only EA and Bioware as a studio.)



EDIT: In terms of 'what do I want from a Bioware game' on this matter, it'd ideally be the following:
-at least one bi or gay male squadmate
-if a bi or gay male non-squadmate happens, they have a truly fleshed out story (less Gil or even Suvi, more Cullen and Josephine)
-in total, 2-3 options; I'm only bothered by the lack of 3 in this case for the achievement
-somewhere, there is a non-fade-to-black scene. No this doesn't mean softcore pornography (hellooo Cora 0_0). It means not hiding m/m away while others get glorified.

I understand we're less people. I am okay with getting less in overall quantity. I am not okay with getting unequal opportunity while being told we're not. I am not okay with a company waving the rainbow flag with a beaming corporate smile while not demonstrating that it matters to them like it would to LGBT activists themselves.

ME3 I was tolerant or even accepting of, because Kaidan was an option (a little awkward as it was) and Steve got expanded presence in two DLCs.

I'm not raging, just explaining. Lets see what can happen.

Oh, they cut it? For real? I just remember some folks talking about data mining and it said Jaal, Peebee, and Vetra were all bi. Huh, oh well, I'm playing female Ryder anyway.
