I was livid at how these people were talking to Ryder after they found out that he was the new Pathfinder. I mean everyone was giving him crap and he did nothing wrong. Why doesn't he pull rank? Isn't he the commanding officer? I do remember Alec giving Ryder an ORDER to open that door on that planet if he didn't do it immediately. I mean I was thinking how I would've hit the renegade button with Shepard ASAP but Ryder just stands there like a dog with his tail between his legs and either jokes about how disrespectful everyone is or just stands there and says nothing. There's no way Cora would put up with that crap...
Anyway it's not game breaking or anything but man is it really irritating to not tell people that I don't care how much their face hurts - if they can't follow the chain of command and do their jobs I'll find someone who can!!
I'm sorry, Commander. Okay, I'm ready, I'm good. I'm ready to save the day.

Ryder technically only overrides on the most critical matters, I think.
It isn't as much 'military chain of command', even if you and other characters come from this experience, and even if the Ai is forced to be more militaristic than originally hoped.
You don't run the Initiative. The leaders could even pull rank on YOU unless you made the strong argument that what you're doing is very necessary for Pathfinding.
We're resorted to more than being a Commander/N7/Spectre so we'll be listened to, sure, but we actually have less direct authority. I think.
If you mean the Pathfinder team authority, yes Ryder has a lot of authority over them. However, Ryder's never commanded crap before, and never had official N7 training, etc etc. The point is that they're learning how to command in their own way, and sucking at it first, so we appreciate how much better they are later. And he does get better. Enough for your liking? Can't say.
In terms of Addison, she technically has more say than you, even if informal authority has her desperate for relevance and success so she can retire in peace. Pathfinder only overrides her on critical matters. She has more say within the Initiative and especially on colonial matters. You can bad talk her to her face and even disobey her and she'll probably deal with it, but she likely could also sic forces on you for going rogue. She's leadership - you're the vanguard - in the end.

I think a lot of this is justified by the fact it's a civilian operation.
The Pathfinder is basically the Chief Scout for the organization's Arks.
Which means his authority is limited to matters concerning the colonization.

I think a lot of this is justified by the fact it's a civilian operation. The Pathfinder is basically the Chief Scout for the organization's Arks. Which means his authority is limited to matters concerning the colonization. SPOILERS AHEAD, you have been warned Well, you aren't "just a scout" - look at Alec (and the other pathfinders or pathfinder-replacements (their seconds in case they bought it!)), he is part of Initiative-Leadership (he designed the freaking AIs the A.I. is using after all, hell he bosses the captain of the Hyperion around (despite the fact that it's her ship, she says so but in the end it's still his way or the highway!)) and the others are also in similar positions of authority, so we are kind of SPECTREs (I mean look at who they selected for pathfinder (and pathfinder second in command), those people are quite similar to SPECTRE and N7 recruitment criteria...one of them actually is (or was) N7 (Alec) and another is a former SPECTRE (Avitus) and another was a damned Asari Matriarch (and her replacement is a damned fucking combat proven Asari Huntress who basically seems to have re-written the book on Asari commando warfare! So someone like John "Lofty" Wiseman, who wrote the SAS survival-guide!)!)...officially we might not have similar authority (as in others could overrule us, but it's not like we would just have to sit down and take it...just like when the director tries to make you his puppet, in theory he could, but in practice he can't especially since he can't just take S.A.M. out of you and without the AI nobody would be an as effective pathfinder!) Still, it's probably not like the military - I'd love to read the A.I. book (to know what certain people can and can't do officially (not that they probably couldn't...not everybody plays by the rules or if they do they don't play by the SAME rules (can't get into a leadership position by being totally nice and all - you got to show you can handle people trying to keep you down and all that!)) - that it's always clear cut...then again the A.I. seems ill prepared for anything (they have no backup plans, they can't tough it out till planets are viable (without the Remnant tech we'd all be dead probably!)), kind of strange when you consider who is in the A.I.-Leadership (Alec Ryder for example) and who the secret "Benefactor" probably is (it's not confirmed, but very very very likely that it's TIM!)...look at their basic equipment: Most is either not very good (works fine, but is pretty basic) and some of it is downright endangering the people using it (Initiative helmets and space suits for example, same for an unarmed scout ship that has more in common with a luxury yacht than a true scout ship IMHO and again the same for the Nomad Rover (that thing is ok for a civilian prospector to use, but not for a scout venturing bravely into the unknown, boldly going were no one has gone before (sorry, CNR!))...strangely they seem to have access to blueprints for better stuff (hell, they have the Normandy plans (!) and not only the SR-1 if I am right!) It's also kind of strange that they didn't dock some frigates with the Arks (the Turians wouldn't go somwhere without a few warships and a backup-plan IMHO, it's highly out of character for them to just take an unarmed ship without escorts into the unknown! Hell, not even Humans do that, especially since the First Contact War!) to provide a basic line of defense for future colonies and the Nexus! Ok, maybe that's got something to do with "we have to accellerate our timeline" (might not have had time to pack the good stuff, that's why it's plans only - make the good stuff yourself if you really need it!) greetings LAX
