I haven't been a huge advocate for tactical pauses or ability wheels since I quite like the new combat/command system, but I understand how loyal and passionate most Mass Effect fans are so I came up with this simple idea on an Ability Wheel strictly for squad commands. On console, you press left or right on the DPad to order a squad mate. Works well IMHO! However, holding the left or right DPad button has no functionality/input. (Not sure what the PC buttons are, but it can be mapped differently) The way it would work, in theory, is you still need to point your cross hairs at the target before holding the button so you aren't taking advantage of a "tactical pause" to look around your environment. The screen/menu wheel would be fixed just like the weapon wheel. 1. Point cross hair at designated target 2. Hold Left or Right or UP on the DPad instead of tapping it to bring up Squad Mates' Ability Wheel 3. Select at most one ability for each squad mate. (Looks just like the weapon wheel. Example: Three abilities for Drack on the left. Three abilities for Jaal on the right. On the weapon wheel were you see the blue/red borders, those would serve as the cool down meter with any ability in cool down grayed out.) 4. Hit "Circle" or whatever is the designated back button for each platform 5. Squad mates perform ability and you can follow up on combo This system would be a quick UI design fix that still leverages the same game mechanics. It just adds an additional option as simply pressing the left or right button works normally as before. I am sharing with Bioware on their page, but I want to get feedback here. Thanks!

You barely even need to spec him. I've hidden behind crates and let him finish on a number of occasions. Run the enemy somewhere else, come back and revive. (I wound up turning the difficulty down.)

I choose no because I want tactical pause back. I want to be able to pause, look around the battlefield, and then choose powers for everyone. I don't understand why some people are so bothered by the fact that other players might be pausing their games. What do you care? If you don't like it, don't use it yourself.

Holding the button cancels the previous command. This is how you get a squaddie to stop standing where you told them to stand, or whatnot. (Holding left or right cancels individual, corresponding commands. Holding Up cancels universally.) I agree that greater control of squaddies is preferable, but I'm finding that properly specced teammates operate pretty well as is. They definitely are not useless meatshields, as many are suggesting. (I know that's not the theme of the OP, but it was already in my thoughts before I saw this thread.)

It's a shame that they decided that managing your squadmates was not important. That was one of the things that I thought needed improvement from ME3, and they could have done here.
I think the better idea was to create a method to design tactics with your squadmates so you wouldn't need to pause your game during combat. To program in a simple interface what they would do so they would behave more like they were Co-Op mates in the Multiplayer.
On the PC you could program a lot of hot keys to every power your squadmates have. But in Consoles, there's a limitation in the number of buttons available.
The game could have a screen like that:
[Squadmate Name]
Enemies with Health => Choose power Enemies with Shield and Health => Choose power Enemies with Shield and Armor => Choose power Enemies with Armor => Choose power Enemies Frosted => Choose power Enemies Burning => Choose power
And so on.
And you could rearrange the order of that configuration to design priority. In the example above, the character would try to use the power chosen to deal with enemies with only health first than the other options.
Of course it would be an advanced feature. Casual gamers would still use automatic squadmate powers.

I am going to be honest here. I am not a fan of squad commands. I know some people like to play like old hermits and take 20 minutes to fight something because they want to plan every little inch out, but for me personally, I am the type to jump straight in and not look back. So making the companions to be AI controlled fits me fine, so I can focus more on my own abilities and not theirs.

While I agree with the sentiment you expressed here, I voted yes because I would welcome any ability to better control the squadmates. I've found it much more difficult to manage them in MEA - to the point where I don't even bother trying. No power wheel, no mini-map are huge losses for me. I am going to be honest here. Even when the power wheel (and ability to turn off squad power usage) existed, you still had the ability to play that way. MEA has taken away the ability to play more tactically in exerting some control over squadmate behavior.

The thing is though that we always could choose whether we wanted to order the squad around or not. Now they dumbed everything down. Squad orders are what made combat most efficient (and fun) in the trilogy for me. I've seen various playthroughs and people tactically using squadmates slayed through enemies. There's also a lot more variety with commanding squadmates than only doing stuff on your own. If you're talking about only using the Power Wheel to issue commands, okay, fair enough. I started playing with it when I was new to ME and never needed it again after my second run, but some people like it and should have the option to do it. It's not like people would have to use it. But the option sure would have been nice. I don't want to start an argument here, but for many people it created a special bond and synergy with the squadmates when you could order them around properly and not leave everything up to chance

I did not realize that. They could have it where holding up on the d pad cancels the actions but holding left or right on the Dpad brings up the ability wheel. That could allow for the tactical pause if people really want to move around the camera. I personally like the new system a lot but I know there is a very vocal minority who doesn't.
