Hi folks,
I am posting this in the spoilers section because this is for folks who have gotten well into the game.
I am having a real issue with pacing, particularly in regards to crew dialogue. I cannot get a sense of how often I should talk to my crew. For example, I remember in ME2 trying to pace myself with crew dialogue, and then totally missing chunks of dialouge with them because I had progressed too far in the game (this happened with characters recruited later...one initial convo to welcome to ship and then BAM, time for their loyalty mission). I totally missed Thane's initial conversations about his memories, etc, because I did a mission after recruiting him. On my 2nd ME2 play through, I realized that I should talk to everyone until I exhausted all possibilities, do a big mission, come back, repeat. If they had something new to say, they would. If they did not, they would not. Simple, easy.
I can't tell what the hell to do in this game. There is so much dialogue that it is a little overwhelming, and I don't want to end up with a silent crew at the end of the game because I used up all their dialogue too early. For example, each character has a wheel of unrelated questions for the non-cinematic interactions (ie, why Andromeda? family? friends? adventures?, etc). Should I save those topics and spread them throughout the game, treating them as little "let's check in!" dialouges? Or should I hit them all as soon as possible because they will be replaced by new options soon (like ME2)?
Also, should I wait to talk to them until an email or Suvi tells me to (ie, for the cinematic ones)?
I guess what I am asking is...has anyone "figured out" the system? Ie, what is the best way to maximize all interactions, but still have time to let relationships grow naturally and not get blocked out of conversations later on. Someone also told me that ignoring emails can get you into trouble with your crew, so how does that factor in?
Can someone explain the system to me? Just general guidelines for how to work the game and enjoy it the most?
Note, I have just finished Havari (or whatever ever the jungle planet was called)...., so I am not super far into the game yet! I am hoping to get the pacing figured out so I can relax and enjoy the game more...
THANKS!

As far as I can tell, squad mates tend to have dialogue after each Priority Op is finished, or after progression in their loyalty missions. Other than that, they'll talk to you when they want to.
I don't have much insight into this however as i only just got to Kadara

You don't need to worry about them running out of things to say later in the game. You also don't need to worry about missing dialogue as long as you go talk to them when prompted. As for emails, just make a habit out of checking your email on the bridge before you start on your rounds and you should be fine. BioWare has finally figured out how to space character interactions out properly, so go ahead and talk to your crew whenever it feels natural to you. Note that even though dialogue options you have already taken will be grayed out, certain options will have different content every time you ask until you've exhausted everything they have to say in that regard (i.e., Cora and Drack's war stories), and certain options will have different content depending on story progression (i.e., Lexi's crew morale updates). It's also worth going back to the Nexus every once in a while to talk to the people there, as well. Most of the sidequests are also not time-sensitive (you can even complete a significant number of them after finishing the main story), so if you haven't had any new dialogue for a long time, you're generally free to move on with story or personal missions to trigger more dialogue. The game does a pretty good job of guiding you to the places you need to go and quests you need to do to maximize the story without punishing you for straying from the intended route. Like you, I always worry about the best "formula" to get the most out of each playthrough of BioWare games, so Andromeda's gentle guidance in this regard is one of the best things about the game, imho.
