This is, quite frankly, my biggest issue with the changes to combat in this game. And really I am not entirely sure why they made this change. I started my first run on Insanity, and played the previous titles on that setting. All three of the previous games had a system for managing the squad on console, with controllers. Which was good because I am a PC player and it was great to be able to actual do meaningful micro with the squad. Any ME veteran should have been able to tell you that managing squadmate power use increased your efficiency fairly dramatically, and made the combo systems in ME2 and ME3 meaningful. Why did squadmate management need to be gutted for this game exactly? It isn't as if it saved on interface. We have a "profile" menu, which we essentially are pausing the game to bring up. We have a "weapon wheel," which on PC is nearly completely worthless except for activating consumables (and those, incidentally should be something that are on hotkeys). And on top of that we have pretty mediocre squad AI. I recently finished a "boss fight" the Cardinal on Hoth, I mean Voeld... which was pretty much perfect for highlighting the tedium of trying to get squadmates to use their powers in a semi-intelligent manner, nevermind keep themselves alive despite their less-than-perfect pathing. In all honesty it would have probably been faster and potentially easier to not even use the squad whatsoever. I mean this wasn't the first part where it was apparent that I was in for a long run. I mean the second squadmate you get starts off with Biotic Charge of all things. This is absolutely not the case in the previous games, where some squad micro actually pays dividends. And no, squad micro as a somewhat powerful tool is not the same thing as the squad playing the game by themselves, as it is requiring player input. I am not asking for the AI to be so adept such that the player could sit on their rear and watch the squad light everything up and duo the whole game. I have managed to do most encounters keeping the squad upright the entire time, even though it is more tedious than in previous titles with less payoff. ... Now that this is out of the way, what have you found is the most effective way to manage the squad in this game? Builds might also be worth noting, as well as how often you end up rezzing them.
