Yes I'm new here but I want to give my opinion. I've played all of the previous Mass Effect games numerous times but I'm really struggling to get into this one. I never thought I'd say that about a Mass Effect game.
One thing about the Mass Effect games is I always loved (most) of the squadmates and would have a hard time deciding which to bring along. In this game I pretty much always bring Jaal and Drack. The rest are just...so boring....
Liam - he makes quips, that's about the range of his character. He bores me to tears.
Cora - wah, she was first in line and you took it. She likes rose gardens. She walks like an old grandma. I see her working some boring office job, not traveling with me across galaxies.
PeeBee - she's just irritating. I can't stand to listen to her. I want to throw her out the cargo bay.
Vetra - the dullest turian ever, she seems like a mommy figure. I don't like her VA. where's her personality?
So Drack..pretty typical Krogan, sadly that's way better than the rest. Jaal is the only somewhat interesting character and I like his VA.
The characters are horribly written especially Cora and Peebee. I thought with a reduced squad size we'd get some really interesting depth, but instead I got Cora yapping about her garden and Liam wanting to watch a movie. Okkkay. Where's the Garrus? Where's the Thane? Where's the Kasumi? Where's the Tali? Where's the Wrex?
NOBODY STANDS OUT except maybe Jaal and even his dialogue is pretty cringe at times.
These are the worst squad mates EVER.....and if there's a sequel I hope they scrap them all.

I agree. Tali the walking codex, garrus the disgruntled cop, space religious racist ash, kaidanzzzzzzzzzz and fainting damsel liara were all much more interesting in me1.

Hell, even Ashley who I don't care for had a temper and was fiery at times. The best word to describe ME:A squad mates is dull. Do you think anyone is going to remember or care about Cora, Vetra, Liam, etc. a year later? Highly doubtful. Those are bland characters that should be sending me out on fetch quests, not main integral characters in the story. as simplistic as it was, the convo with Suvi about her belief in a god was more compelling than any conversation I've had with a squadmate.

All she ever talks about is the fucking asari commandos.

In my opinion the ME characters never were that interesting, it took more than one game to get into them in any way. They are more "people" like, while DA have more "character" like... characters. Which makes those more fun to me. Drama, vs adventure sort of characters... Not sure if that makes sense. ME:A companions had some more emotional impact, Drack's story and how he hit rock bottom, Cora's dream of a rose garden (simple, but it was rather sweet I think, when she released those seeds on eos. I like how a random conversation was brought up again, and given more purpose.) I find the interactions with these companions far more rewarding than the other games.

I love the squadmates. Well, Liam is pretty boring, but other than him I love all the others ones. Heck, even Peebee who I thought I'd hate.

I rather like Cora, but based on how far I've come in the game, she does seem to never shut up about Asari Commandoes. the only one that hasn't quite connected with me is Liam, and to some degree Vetra.

Okay, Garrus ended up being one of my favorite characters later on in the trilogy, but he didn't really stand out first game. Wrex didn't become likable until 2. Let's stop pretending these characters were instantly iconic; they grew on you throughout three games.
What you're asking for is carbon copies. You can't go into Andromeda with the first trilogy's old baggage. Put that on the back burner and try to play Andromeda as it's own game. These characters, too, grow on you. I really disliked Peebee upon first meeting her, but now she's one of favorite party members. People are so easily dismissive.

Thanks everyone for giving me your thoughts without chewing my head off. I'm glad most of your are enjoying the new squadmates. Maybe I'm not far enough along, but I remember in previous games how new squad mates clicked right away and I was interested in them, like Thane or Samara.

Meh. Feels about the same to me as the original trilogy - some characters are instantly likable, others have to take time to reach their peak, and the rest pretty much fall flat or are just there.

I will. These are by far my favorite characters and they are so much more interesting than the characters in the OT. I've only played a few hours with them as opposed to the three games with the OT characters and I like the new ones more. That doesn't mean I don't love Tali, Grunt, Wren, Garrus, Thane, etc, but I just like this ragtag bunch better. There's more organic interaction and the group already feels like the ME3 group finally did in the Citade dlc. It's great

I agree. I've beaten the game now, started in new game +, and I feel like I've already forgotten them lol. (I'm not that old, I swear) As much as I want to like these new characters, I feel like none of them were given an impactful introduction, or memorable story. I loved the Nomad banter, but most "bonding" scenes/convos between Ryder and crew feel pointless and hollow.

I like all the squadmates, actually, even Peebee whom I thought I would hate. My least favorite one is actually Drack, he doesn't bring that much more to the table than ''stereotypical Krogan badass''. But I still like him thanks to the relationship he has with his granddaughter and because Krogans are awesome anyway.
Certainly beats the crap out of the ME1 squad (whose characters only started being great in ME2 apart from Ashley and Wrex) and ME3's too.

Well, I find MEA squadmates bland and irksome, especially when they kept circling like a whirlpool around the same topics; we went over the dang subject before, I don't want to swirl around it the 3rd and 4th time (my dad died, yes my dad died too. Our fathers died. "cries" / I ran with asari huntresses because no one in the Alliance could handle me. I'm such a stand out. Good for you. I don't care, stop talking about it) I have no favs, no interest. At the most they're all "can do" in combat blow outs.

I really like the squadmates and crew members. Liams writing is a bit strange, Dracks too similar to our previous Krogan and Gil's a bit of a twat but I'm really enjoying everyone else. Particularly Vetra, Cora and Suvi.
They are much better than ME1 and ME3's crew. And while the individual characters aren't as interesting as those in ME2 they make up for it with much more fleshed out interpersonal relationships.

I don't dislike him, but 95% of the time it felt like you could replace him with Wrex and none of his dialogue/actions would feel out of place. There were plenty of other Krogan characters who didn't feel like repeats, like Kesh, and I'd rather have had one of them in his place.

I think we love the old trilogy characters so much because we could interact with most of them for more than one game.
For example, I found Garrus interesting in the first mass effect, yeah, but I fell in love with him only in ME2 and by ME3 I couldn't think of Mass Effect without him (there's no shepard without vakarin :') )
That' why I hope ME:A gets a sequel with Ryder and some of the crew.
