Is it worthwhile to play with a rank 1 character on gold, or would you wait until they're a higher rank before you would even consider playing with them? Are there any characters that don't suffer too much from missing out on 25 skill points at level 20?

If you have a Rank X character Card, a level 1 can do something on Gold.
Or do you mean a rank 1 character Card (like an UR?) on Gold? Thats perfectly fine, you don't need a rank X to be viable on Gold, you just need some basic skill points (Aka, some levels - I would recommend level 7'ish if you play with friends/regulars) and some remotely decent weapons.

It has absolutely nothing to do with characters. The two primary factors are:
1) your weapon.
2) your aim.
Everything else has very little impact. If you have unlocked a good weapon and you have good aim you can do gold lvl 1.

no. It doesn't matter what gear/cards you have it's about common multiple player courtesy. silver is recommended 10+ gold 18+. You stick to the recommendations because it's a courtesy to your fellow players, no one is as good as they think they are, no matter the game you see it all the time, ppl with below rec character team gets trashed. hell even if you are that good you hold the standard so others do.

Vanguard or infiltrator and a good weapon will definitely work on a level 1 on gold, esp if you're at x.

This game puts way more emphasis on guns than powers (which is amusing considering most of the guns seem to suck dick), so as long as you're lucky enough to have a halfway decent weapon, you can play any kit on any difficulty and be fine, regardless of the kit's level or upgrade progress.

Anything is worth trying once. In ME3 it was pretty easy, if you had a good gun, good aim (like said above) and some understanding of game mechanics.
