I'm a bit confused about combat in MEA. Some of the passive trees have very small starting bonuses - e.g., if I recall, Assault Rifles starts with +2% damage, or something along those lines.
In previous ME games, you would have never noticed this bonus and it would have been a wasted point. But, in MEA, do these bonuses matter? Are the weapon passives good investments of points?

The shooting in this game plays more like a shooter than a mutant RPG like in the older games. Those bonuses are there to make you feel as though you're progressing RPG-wise, but not enough to totally unbalance the gameplay. (My opinion anyway)
They will make a difference, but not in a 'I am become death' kind of way like in ME3.

first thing. there is no such thing as a wasted point in ME: A. you can get everything if you play that character enough so worrying about that is fairly pointless. as far as the weapons tree thems it depends on what your doing if your not even going to be equipping a shotgun it can wait. and even if your gonna to mostly use powers it's not a bad idea to get the lvl 4 weight passive so you use more or bigger guns without hurting your cooldowns as it stand my first run endgame character has one of each with a good bit of room to get bigger guns without having to worry about weight.

Read the description, it increases with each point you invest into the combat tree. When you level up Concussive shot, Turbocharge, Fitness, another weapon mastery etc. your assault riffle damage % goes up.

If i look at a Black Widow Sniper Rifle version VII without points in that category it does 660 damage, with the talents it does closer to a 1000. So yeah those passives do matter.
