True, it shouldn't of been done if they were planning any future series for Mass Effect, plus take out a few more big decisions. Honestly, I swing back and forth with the simplified ideas of mine below.. A. They had no plans at all to return to the Mass Effect Trilogy. The ending was like headcanon to what happen after the series was over. They may have thought that IP was wrapped up and thought the new IP and DA were going to be their focus for the next decade or so. The popularity and money making of Mass Effect was too much to pass up so they had to reboot somehow so MEA came the way it did to escape the handicaps of MET decisions including the ending. B. They have always wanted to make another Mass Effect but all those choices during MET (even excluding the ending) were too diverse to really expand on during a stay in the Milky Way especially if Shepherd was alive. The guy/gal you've played hundreds of hours now as an NPC (imagine those angry mobs shouting "my Shep wouldn't do/say that.") The ending uproar might of help them even more to want to not address the endings, ect ..so they planned to leave as soon as they could from the Milky Way and came MEA as it did. Just random thoughts. Shep didn't really get an ending or closure but the Milky Way definitely got it's ending. Honestly speaking, I don't think the publishers really would have had that much difficulty satisfying fans on that end. Fallout 3 had one of the worst endings of all time because it was designed to force the player into a needless heroic sacrifice. No one would have really cared if, say, Shepard had blown up the Reapers with the Conduit without genocide. What happens after that to Shepard, doesn't matter. I think gamer audiences are a bit more flexible than people give them credit for. Hawke not being QUITE right when they showed up in DA:I was a small price to pay for them being a NPC. You seem very open minded. Maybe I am just saying that stuff because those who hated the way it ended were the most outspoken group. I was thrilled to see Hawke. I would have been fine with Shep dying with the Conduit and the Reapers being taken out. I honestly couldn't fathom what they would have done in the Milky Way after that. Possibly rebuilding and expanding on the aliens established lore. I do not envy the team having to come up with a new storyline but they did a good job considering what they had to work with. They had at least 30 people at ME3's initial night release. There was only five people at MEA's night release. I really hope they did good on sales elsewhere to keep the franchise going smoothly.

Like ME1 and ME2 most of the choices have more significance in the sequel than in the actual game. Killing the Council seemed like a big choice in ME1 and it gave you a brief animation but didn't really play out till ME2 and ME3.
The choices can have short term impacts on other decisions and the final mission in ME:A but there are some big (and small decisions) that will likely play out in a more meaningful way in a sequel.

Ultimately the ending is a Christmas tree, you can put tinsel and baubles on it and maybe even a star on the top,but it is still a Christmas Tree at the end of all things.

To what post ending content are you reffering? Is there anything that unlocks only after you beat the game? No new quests, no. But you get like an hour extra content to talk to your crew, other important NPC's and even new NPC's about future ahead. I call that amazing. It's quite clear Bioware will continue working on post-ending content, perhaps some of your choices will play more role in them. Similarly like in DA:I's Trespasser DLC. CEASE AND DESIST - that DLC was the true ending of DA:I! Sorry, but putting the true ending of a game in a DLC is beyond the pale and it's a slap in the face for fans IMHO (especially if said fans didn't like the base game much and now have to shill out for the DLC in order to truly complete the story (not to mention that the decisions in that DLC were gimped, too - why would my atheist-mage inquisitor help the chantry (become their lapdog by downsizing the inquisition to be the divine's personal guard-force to kind of replace the templars in that role!)? Answer: He wouldn't, but the game doesn't offer that choice!)) greetings LAX ps: I don't own that DLC, but I've seen the YT-Vids!

It seems to influence a few things. As an example I saw people saying that Captain Dunn dies in the Hyperions crash landing. She didn't in my playthrough.
Andromeda is setting up things for a sequel however. I think your choices will have more impact in what is to come.
