Hey guys! I've been hooked on ME:A for a while now; in fact, ever since it came out on EA Access. Contrary to what other players seem to be saying, I really love the game and have been having a blast with it so far. The romances are pretty genuine, and as a player I feel very drawn to my LI, Vetra. However, I still have a few ideas for enhancements to the romances that I think should add that extra touch. - More "just being friends" scenes. I really liked the addition of "just being friends" (let's call them JBF) moments, and I was thinking this could be expanded on. Specifically:
- Unlockable, single-use JBF moments on every planet. Each planet would start out with one of these, and then after each quest in that planet's quest line, another one or two would be unlocked. These would play out like small quests, and culminate in a conversation with a flirt option.
- Repeatable JBF moments (aka "activities"). Sometimes, you just want to hang out with your LI, and these would offer the perfect opportunity for that. For example, you could take them and go for a few drinks at Vortex, head to an entertainment district on the Nexus to play some games, or even just watch a vid on the Tempest. As with the unlockable JBF moments, you'd unlock an activity or two every time you completed a major quest on a planet, and you'd get to repeat them as many times as you want, but with an individual cooldown on each activity so your LI doesn't get bored.
- The ability to hug or kiss them at any point. Bad stuff happens all the time in games like ME, so sometimes you just want to hug or kiss someone for comfort's sake. The ability to hug or kiss your LI at any point - yes, even during missions - would add an unrivaled personal touch. There wouldn't even have to be any dialogue; the gesture, and the emotions and events behind it, would be enough to sell the moment. However, characters would become weirded out by repeated kisses and hugs, resulting in a cooldown before you'd be able to hug or kiss them again.
- The ability to take the initiative (see what I did there? ;]) in the climactic romance scene. Ever notice how it's always the LI who takes the lead in climactic romance scenes? It's always them walking into your cabin to kick things off, and all you get to do is say "yeah, we'll bang" or "no, I don't want this." What if you got to take the lead, and prove your love to them in your own way? For example,
[/i]was the one presenting Vetra with a surprise?" [/spoiler][/ul] The scenario mentioned in the spoiler would be a clever twist on the original formula, and the ability to prove my love to her in such a way would have been deeply satisfying. Of course, for players uncomfortable with taking matters into their own hands like this, there would be the option to let the romance play out in a more traditional way, with the LI taking the lead in the final scene.
Whew, that took a while to formulate! So, what do you guys think? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this, and I really hope at least one BW employee stumbles across this thread because I think these are some genuinely good ideas.

I think a simple and fun mechanic to have would be having the option to have the LI tag along in safe zones like hubs, and various points of interest for a more in depth encounter would be specific to each follower/crew member. Like, Suvi, for example, would probably gravitate toward the labs, Liam the bars, etc.

Also, make a dialogue system where "heart" is not an exclusive tone, but building a romance happens if you "push the right buttons" so to speak. If a certain girl on my squad likes it when I'm cocky and smartassy she will start to play back at me and eventually the bond will grow romantic as you move from "cocky" to "emotional" with them and it's up to the player to read their love interest properly instead of this dumbed down system where "romance" has its own dialogue tree.

To be honest, adding all of this stuff would turn this into the "Mass Effect Dating Simulator."
Adding a few personal touches here and there, like the ability to hug and/or kiss your LI on the Tempest or whatever, yeah, would be cool. Kinda like they did in DA:I. Anything much more than that could quickly get out of hand and be too much, in my opinion. I like the romances, when done well, and I think they add a more "personal" note to your characters' journey, but I'd be leery of adding too much romance related stuff.
Just my $0.02, YMMV.

I wouldn't mind having more interaction with companions in general, that could be repeated. Not just with LI, like shooting range with Vetra, or watching movies with Liam, sparring with Cora.. etc..

I'm sure that if you look hard enough, there will be a game just like you want.
It's gonna be in Japanese though.

Being able to maneuver through a companion's preferences would be fun to me. Heck I wouldn't be opposed to having some companions being averse to certain personalities, so like if your character is cocky often enough, it creates a negative or positive flag depending on what they're scripted to like.

Well I know for sure you could piss people off in previous mass effect games where they'd stop talking to you or they'd die if you had bad relations. I think DAII also had a rivalry system where you could have companions work with you but they'd disapprove of your actions and even talk negatively about it. I think the andromeda dialogue setup is going backwards personally as I preferred what we had in the past. But for the romance options like the dude was wanting I still think many people would be irked having to get certain dialogue correct to romance them. They won't want to put in that extra work.

I dunno. Having fail states in romance content makes it more interesting to me. It's why I prefer approval systems of some sort where major decisions could greatly affect chances of success.

I thought that older Bioware games already did that, and that they were attempting to distance themselves from romance being "pick the right response for sex scene reward". It wasn't extra work so much as it was like playing minesweeper with dialogue (Baldur's Gate II). I think if Andromeda is to be a saga or series of some sort they should definitely add more depth to the romances and character interactions in the next game; not unlike what the OP suggested, but also with the ability to upset your potential LI and lock yourself out of said romance. To clarify: I think the reason we can't really "burn bridges" with our companions is because this is the first game in a new Mass Effect series and is setting them up for the long term, building a rapport with Ryder.

The opportunity to give you LI a reassuring kiss after a difficult battle was something that was allowed to us with DAO. I don't think it was available with every character but there was certainly one where I could take a spontaneous kiss at any time while we were out in the field and it seemed very appropriate to that romance. I was rather disappointed when that feature was omitted from later games.
Another thing they had was gift giving on the part of the PC. People criticised this as being a cheap way of winning approval. However, there were some gifts that had a particular significance to certain characters, which you discovered by engaging in conversation with them, and would result in a special dialogue if you gave it to them, whether as a friend or a lover. This was also true of DA2 but the gift of special significance was altered to being something you just did for a lover in DAI. Still the option was there, so if enough people asked for it, it ought to be something they could do in the ME universe as well.

Exactly, and I wasn't even thinking of AP when I wrote it but you're right, that game, regardless of what you think of Mina, Scarlett or SIE had great romance arcs in the way it required you to use the dialogue system because you had to attempt at giving them what they'd like to see just like in real life instead of pressing the "click here to build relationhip" button.

Spoilers are contained within spoiler tags and are about the main narrative. My hope for future romance content would have a better tie-in with the main narrative. Example: I flirted with Jaal and had a nice thing going. Proceeded to do a main mission where SAM wanted to release Sara from the Kett cage thing and suggested stopping her heart to free her. Liam was like: "Holy crap! Are you kidding!?" Jaal, on the other hand, was like, "Eh, whatever". Ouch. Plus given how many times that can happen in this game, you'd think there might be some reaction from your Li about it. I've only experienced this one romance in Andromeda, which was a slow-burn, and I really enjoyed how it was done. No complaints but more Li content is always welcome .

In DAO, you had two extra squad members besides you and your love interest, who could be high fiving it. With just the one extra squad member in MEA, I'd feel bad for the squad member who wasn't part of the couple who was hugging and kissing after a hard battle.

With at least one of the DLCs seeming to be post-main quest, one thing I would like them to do is expand on the romances like perhaps each one can have a date scene while keeping to the spirit of the romance. For example Sarah and Suvi can go out to dinner with Suvi finally finding Heleus stuff she can eat, Scott and Cora can go on a camping trip like she talked about, etc.

Of course. Some of the stuff I've listed above would be held off until after you're locked in. Like you wouldn't just be able to up and kiss your LI if she still wasn't sure you're the one. That approach would leave room for fail-states, which would make the romance even deeper.

I'm always up for more and more complex squad interaction, no matter if LI or just other crew mates. It helps with bonding with characters immensely. Since I think characters are BW's true strength, I'll take any extra scenes I can get

I've only experienced this one romance in Andromeda, which was a slow-burn, and I really enjoyed how it was done. No complaints but more Li content is always welcome . This is my biggest issue with the romances so far-- they don't seem to be affected by narrative at all. For example, in my game Scott just woke up from his coma but I know Jaal probably won't have anything to say about it, or I won't have the option to tell him. Jaal and Scott probably won't end up emailing or talking at some point because Jaal is interested in getting to know Sara's last living family member. And I take it from a trailer I've seen that Scott might get kidnapped by the Archon, but Jaal probably won't react to that either.
I also would love it if you got romance content if you take your LI out on missions with you. In both the trilogy and Andromeda I took my LI everywhere with me and I'm sure I'm not alone. So it would be awesome if there were unique bits of dialogue that happened. Or, like in DA2, if you took your LI on a mission with you and your health got really low they would react to it. My biggest thing overall I that I wish the devs made less room for 'great banging' and more room for things that would have made the romances feel like an ongoing relationship between two characters instead of just a collection of scenes and a minor change in the end phrases of non-cutscene dialogue. Because right now that's the feeling I'm getting from them.

I don't think more detail should go into it. It's not a dating sim. If Bioware can put enough time into making a nude alien model go down on someone, then they can add a few more scenes/interactions with your LIs.

I am tired everytime when people push other who like to have more romance content to play The Sims or another dating game or something like that.
The Sims or dating game is not (Action) RPG like Mass Effect/Dragon Age. I (and many fan) want to play game that have RPG element with great story, ton of action etc. too.
All of us just want more for content that we like. The different is what content do you want most. Action, explore, crafting, story, role play element, romance and many more.
STOP push people who want more romance away from Mass Effect franchise (and other game) .

There should be an option to get Space crabs if you sleep with random characters in shady ports. And make it super punishing too, like every 20 seconds in combat you have to stop to scratch your balls. Make him PAY!!!!

One of the cool things about the DLC's for ME3 was having the Li react as an Li in certain situations. Garrus being terrified of loosing Shepard when she came back up from speaking with Leviathan, for example, was awesome. I believe this is my only problem with the romance content in this game. Everything else, at least for that romance, worked beautifully for me.
