Did you not play ME3MP? I know the character cards now work a little differently, but weapons work exactly the same. It took me over a year to get my first Krogan soldier in ME3MP. Personally, I like the RNG. I like that all my friends have all different characters and weapons unlocked. Wanting something specific and not getting it just gives me something to look forward to. I dont feel the packs are too expensive, nor are good items currently dropping too infrequently for my interest to dip. Eventually ill get bored, but hopefully thats where regular DLC kicks in to refresh it. I actually agree with this. If players could just buy whatever they wanted, everyone would be running around with TGI/Harriers or the MEA equivalent 2 days after release. This type of system ensures variety. Well, that's kinda going from one extreme to the other: Either random rewards or let the player buy whatever they want a la Counter-Strike. I always say that they could've implemented some sort of progression to unlock kits/guns. So for instance, sniper players will only do these sniper challenges to unlock their fav SRs and what have you. AR fans will do AR related challenges to progress through a line of different ARs, thus everyone get what they want if they work for it, instead of letting them buy it straight away or punish them with random stuff they'll never use.

Opened a premium pack just now. Saw N7 card... ... prays for kineticist... ... gets N7 Valkyrie... This is utter bullshit, grinding time away rather than enjoying playing. This game really tries to make you NOT want to play.
