(Note, please be civil in this thread so we could have a genuine discussion about this question)
One of the things I enjoyed about previous ME titles was developing lasting friendships with other male characters. I liked the comradery and the male-male bond that could develop over time, especially when you have gone through the trenches together, to hell and back. I could be as friendly and kind to another man as I wanted, without feeling like I might be misleading them or sending the wrong signals. The only exception to this, of course, was that one scene in ME3, where my closest friend expressed his love for me, which forced me to turn our relationship strictly professional from that point on, so as not to mislead him to send him the wrong signals. Thus I could no longer develop a deeper male-male bond as I was hoping.
So now with ME:A, where almost every strong male character can be romanced by Scott Ryder, I must admit that it has put me a little on guard. Whenever I see that "heart" symbol, I feel hesitant to develop a deeper friendship with that person, knowing that he may be sexually interested in me. And so to keep things strictly professional, I keep to the logical/professional responses, without really exploring a deeper male-male friendship.
Jaal wants to talk to me. Should I talk to him? Will he express his love for me too? Have I been too nice to him? These are the kinds of thoughts that I consider now when interacting with other male characters. And to be honest, it has made things a little awkward for me. I no longer feel free to be as kind and loving to another male as I want. And in this sense, it is difficult to really to develop that bond with other characters or get close to them.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. Hopefully I was able to express myself without being discriminating or hateful. And I hope that your responses in this thread can remain civil and thoughtful.

Um... Gay Scott has the lowest number of options. None of them are squadmates, so you can go ahead and be friendly with all of the male squadmates, and Kallo. ... Are you sure the heart symbol you're seeing is the flirt option, and not the emotional option? The flirt one is a large, solid heart in the middle, and the emotional responses are smaller hollow hearts at the top, adjacent to the logical options.

I only finished a playthrough with Sara and barely started a Scott playthrough but my experience is that the game doesn't push anything on you. You can talk and bs with anyone all you want without being railroaded into any romance options. Any romances in game has to be initiated by the player.

For every romance option added I think the next one is decreased in depthness. Back when these games were hetero only like in KOTOR I felt like the romances went much, much deeper. Could be wrong but I just remember it that way. I think BioWare should take the next step and make a gay-only game in terms of romances

I remember that time I accidentally romanced Leliana because all you have to do is be nice to her and the game locks you into a romance with her, so I kicked up a massive stink about it on the internet.............oh no wait I didn't.

The flirt one is a large, solid heart in the middle, and the emotional responses are smaller hollow hearts at the top, adjacent to the logical options. It is probably the heart thing. I made that mistake. Spent an hour or two thinking, Holy Crow this Ryder girl is a slut! I hope SAM takes care of birth control as well. I finally realized my mistake when I was talking to Someone I knew I couldn't flirt with and the second smaller heart icon was up. Turns out I'm not quite the slut I thought I was. Not for lack of trying though...

yeah I confused the heart icons too at first, tried to flirt with the cute older doctor but it wasn't actually a flirt option.

No.
Liam is my Scott Ryder's bro.
No romance there. Didn't even touch the flirt icon.
Have a good relationship with Gil too.

I think the (small) heart icon is confusing a lot of people. I mean, it isn't the best design choice to have a small heart mean one thing and a large heart mean something else. It becomes obvious as you play the game, but they probably should have done something different. I also think some color on all of the icons would help differentiate them more easily.

Y-you mean all two of them? EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure as long as you avoid the heart symbols romance will never happen so your concern is entirely moot, even if the initial premise wasn't inaccurate to start with.

Omg, if you do read emo icon as a flirt, the game will indeed take on quite a different tone. Win the game by seduction, lol.

Do you guys know if there is a way to turn off the romance options altogether? So I don't even have to see the heart icon?

How about this? You use the emotional (hollow heart) or casual icons with your squad as you see fit. Do their loyalty missions as it allows, but do not do their follow-ups until you progress and lock-in the specific relationship that you want. (It will be clear when this happens.) And then feel free to talk to everyone else now that you're exclusive.

Do you guys know if there is a way to turn off the romance options altogether? So I don't even have to see the heart icon? No, you will have to keep yourself from clicking it all by yourself. I know, it takes a tremendous amount of willpower and a real high IQ, but I think you can manage not to click a clearly marked option you don't want to select. I am also positive you can screenshot it and post the result each and every time to complain how much you suffer because it's there. Waiting. Liam also hates wearing a shirt in any area where the Enviro Hazard is below 1. Just hates it.

Do you guys know if there is a way to turn off the romance options altogether? So I don't even have to see the heart icon? Again, the hollow heart is not a flirt icon, it's the emotional tone icon. It has nothing to do with romance. So, say anything you want to Jaal, Liam, and Kallo. As far as I know, the solid heart, where it exists, cannot be turned off from appearing. However, no one is forcing you to choose it. Gil and Reyes, the only two male-male options, will not ninja-mance you as far as I know (not in the way Liara and Kaidan both got me in ME1, for instance). So if you don't flirt with them, then they won't be sexually attracted to Scott all on their own. I mean, they aren't real people with their own emotions.

You will get all the friendship scenes he has. I turned him down with my FemShep and yeah, he takes it like a champ and we were still friends afterwards.

Meh... since I don't see any of the friendships with one of the guys reach anything that I'm actually interested in, and the flirting is always clearly identifiable, I don't really care. I mean, Reyes - or as I like to call him: space Zevran - seams like a decent enough guy, but he is such a cliche it makes my brain bleed, so. *shrugs*
Also, I don't really see the big "advantage" straight people have over gays... the romances are all equally shallow and boring... and in terms of actual flirt opportunities (not number of characters), the NPCs are actually superior to the squad. It's been 20-30 hours since I had an option to even flirt with Cora, but I had about 10-15 chances to hit on Reyes since I started working with him on Kadara. Just because your squaddies are with you all the time, doesn't mean they actually, well, do anything of note.

The flirt options should move on if you chose not to take the first one. That clearly states I'm not interested. I get tired of going back to talk to Liam and the option to say You want him is there even though he's going to turn you down. Pointless.
Or just not have Suvi/Liam be there for guys and Cora/Gil be there for females in the first place.
