Ever since Citadel DLC BioWare has been making cop-out conversations. It goes something like this.
Liam: "Hey Ryder, wanna do something?" *They drink beer. Fade to black.* Liam: "...and then I said, hey you can't be serious!" Ryder: "Haha, what a story Mark!"
This also happened at the end of a pretty personal scene with PeeBee. Thanks for not showing me what happens because you copped out BioWare. Inquisition was full of this crap too. I go talk to someone and suddenly we're on the wall of Skyhold, the conversation goes nowhere interesting and it skips in a sort of "and then they had a good conversation..." fadeout thing.
I mean jesus, are you paid to write these scenes or not? Stop wasting time or don't make those scenes to begin with :/. That's part of the problem with new BioWare games and budget-things. They have really poor economy in terms of priorities. They just have a number of planned scenes but then each scene gets less effort. It sucks because all it does is kill immersion... momentum even. Not that every scene is like this, but it's too often and especially there the longer you get into the game. It just feels like the writers don't believe in what they're writing or they ran out of steam.

It's not an uncommon technique in television, although the typical application is to cut away to the B plot for a minute.
Remember, the metric the industry uses for budgeting is wordcount, not scenes. Doing the stuff under the fade-to-black means cutting a scene someplace else.
At least, that used to be the way they kept count. Idon't know how animations and cutscenes figure into that. But there's no way they count by scene.

Huh. I thought people wanted cinematic storytelling in their games. So now it's bad when they build scenes similar to movies & TV?

There's just no excuse that isn't "technical" or "budget"-related here. In movies you have to cut some scenes short because there's a limit for the run-time and of course if there's a legit time-skip intended then go for it but to cop out of a conversation that could've been interesting like hearing Liam's life-story but no, nothing.

I don't like any moment that suggests that the PC is doing outside what the player can see or control.
I can't remember any scenes ME1 that felt like this. It was like seeing Shepard's story from beginning to end.
ME2 betrayed this feeling with the awful Joker scene and since then BioWare continue to make scenes where the PC is acting outside of the player, lessening the RPG aspects of the game significantly.

Was anyone making an excuse? I didn't mean my comment to come across as such. I think it's a legitimate technique that doesn't need an excuse.

There's just no excuse that isn't "technical" or "budget"-related here. How about to avoid trouncing player's role-play? You do realize a lot of people object to auto-dialogue, right? The purpose of (for example) the scene of Shepard drinking with Chakwas was not to dictate exactly how Shepard would behave in that situation - what would be discussed, etc. The time they spent together may have been 10 minutes or a few hours, and you can bet that people would have held very strong opinions about how much time their Shepard would have spent w/ Chakwas, how many drinks their Shepard would have consumed during that time, and what their Shepard would talk to Chakwas about. No thanks.
