I've just started ME2 after ME1, and I am not sure how to do a couple of basic things.
First is how do I access my inventory -and does the game even have it? Do I get drops of more powerful armour and weapons like in ME1, or do I just evolve existing items on the workbench once I unlock the lab on Normandy?
second, if I do not have the Shadow Broker expansion, do my companions level up authomaticaly, and I don't need to do anything to initiate it? Or am I not finding something under the squad button to force them to level up?
thank you!

You don't have inventory as it was in ME1. You gain weapons and armor parts that you could call equal. The only difference between them is on which stats they focus on. So you can even finish whole game with what you start with. You can change them on the Normandy, as well you can change weapons at the beginning of the mission.
You don't need Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC (LotSB in short) to level up companions. They'll level up with Shepard, but depending on your options, you either assign points for them manually or the game assigns them itself.

On holiday on Dantooine. This whole "vengeance on the Jedi" thing gets very tiring after a while.

Mass Effect 2 doesn't have an inventory. There are only a few weapons which you find around the game, then you can choose them at the start of each mission for each of your squad members.
Upgrades are handled very differently also. When you buy an upgrade for a weapon, you can research the data in the Normandy lab and spend the resources you collected from the planet scanning. Instead of choosing which upgrades to choose individually, all the upgrades you get stack on top of each other. e.g. if you get an Assault Rifle AP (armour piercing) upgrade, it will automatically go onto all assault rifles. If you then get an Assault Rifle Damage upgrade, that will also go onto all your assault rifles too, and you don't have to sacrifice one for another. This happens with all weapon types.
For your second question, I am not entirely sure what you mean. However, this is a basic explanation of how levelling works in ME2:
After every mission, you will be given a set amount of XP, instead of the system from ME1 where each enemy you killed gave you a set XP amount. For most of the main missions, you will be likely to gain one level each mission. Next time you enter a new mission, you will be shown the squad screen, where you can assign the points 9also, like ME1, in the pause menu. There is also a button to auto-level up (this is shown when each power is highlighted), which assigns points randomly to each skill tree, although you will probably prefer to do it manually to focus on what sort of build you will like for you and your squad.
Sorry if the explanations were hard to follow or sounded patronising. It might be a good idea to check the wiki: masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Equipment#Mass_Effect_2 masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Upgrade_Guide masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Powers

Okay, I understand it now. I must have missed the companion button on the low left corner of the interface when it brought it up. I will pull up the squad screen and see if it's there all the time.

As stated there isn't exactly inventory which is good and bad.
The Research Terminal is in the Lab on Deck 2 (where Mordin is) and allows you to research upgrades that you find on missions (upgrades you buy from shops are automatically applied and don't need research).
The armor locker is in the captain's quarters so that you can change what armor pieces will be equipped on Shepard (squadmates don't have armor that gives stats in this game).
There is a weapon's locker in the armory that lets you switch the weapons for the squad members while on Normandy (although this isn't particularly useful to me).
