Probably too hard to balance, but the concept of choosing from a range of powers and slotting them to create a custom build seems to be a better design than unlocking 30 different character classes.
I could see the same micro transaction system used, but instead of unlocking character cards, unlocking slotable powers just like unlocking weapons. I'm enjoying using a a sniper with tactical cloak, pull, and throw in SP. Using the same idea in MP would have been a nice step forward in the MP design over ME3.

How would it start off from the beginning though? You select the three you want, and hope the rest? Or you get stuck with the powers you don't want, and suckily play until you get the ones you want?

mp is there for diversity and trying stuff you didnt in sp. your suggestion means: probably overpowered combos, no need for teamplay/comboplay at all and on top of that: you would probably play only 1-2 characters, making the mp boring after a short while (even for those who love it)
as bioware said before release, there will be free future content for the MP. meaning you will probably get new characters and with luck you will see your combo in the future.

But then you wouldn't buy packs Exactly.Other than the infuriating lag and the need for serious balance changes, the insane ammount of grind needed to max your manifest on MEA's MP is 1000 times worse than it was on ME3 ( and it sucked badly back then ) EA makes tons of money with Fifa's Ultimate Team, and we can all se a pattern in here.Unfortunately MEA's MP is such a mess that many of us wont be wasting a single $ on packs this time
