My friend gave me Mass Effect 1 about two years after it came out as a Christmas gift.
Had never heard of it before but gave it a play through because I had like Knights of the Old Republic.
Played the Renegade, skipped a lot of side content, stuck to the main story, finished it. It was enjoyable but I found that it was buggy, the buildings were identical on every planet I drove around, the characters weren't amazing except for Wrex (Ashley did and still does bug the shit out of me, the choice of who to let die has always been an easy one for me). Anyway when I was done I set it aside and didn't think about it again. The graphics were so so. I found it was a little over the top, especially when you let the Council get blown up.
A year or so later my friend bought me ME2.
I enjoyed it, found it more restrictive and less open than the first. However, it was the first time I really like one of the characters and it was Garrus. In ME1 I found him a little bland. But in 2 I had a serious bromance going on. Then I ran into someone who was there on behalf of the rachni queen and realized decisions really were coming forward. Then I didn't get my Spector status back and I was pissed. Enjoyed the new companions, like seeing the hold ones. Don't get me wrong, it had flaws, the whole Human Reaper thing made no sense to me.
I decided to go back and make a couple different decisions so I picked up Mass Effect 1 out of my pile and played it again focusing still on the main mission.
Then Mass Effect 3 came out and I bought it for myself. That game made it all come together. Despite the rocky start with the endings I appreciated the work Bioware put in to fix it. I played 3 through two times and as soon as I was done I played my first complete playthrough of Mass Effect 1. I did EVERYTHING. I found the Turian Ensignia's, mined resources. I saw the game through a whole new light and realized all the tiny things that could carry through all the games. After this I ended up playing all 3 games through many many many times.
It was the combined strength of all the games forming a coheisve whole that made them really great.
So that's why I hate all the comparisons between the OT and Andromeda. It's not a fair comparison when you have 3 whole games to fall in love with the characters, explore the whole depth of the lore, and see every single thing. Each of the original 3 games had their flaws, but it was how they played together that made them great for me.
In the grand scheme of things I liked ME3 a lot, it still remains my favorite because it pulled all the aspects together for me, and the Citadel DLC is one of my favorite because I really got to have fun with the crew I had come to know so well. For me ME2 and MEA are tied. And ME1 is my least, but even then it is my least favorite game of my most favorite series of all time, so it still ranks well above a lot of other games for me.
Andromeda deserves a lot better than its getting. Especially for its opening week. For the first time in the series I took my time with the first playthrough and played Andromeda for 77 hours so I could get 98% complete. I then started my second playthrough. There is little details I just know will play out down the road. For example, I was asked if we should teach the kids the history of the Milky Way or not. I hope in the next game we move ahead 10 years, so we can see how the colonies develop. I would love to see a school with kids born in Andromeda, studying and learning together. Those little moments are why I love these games. This game has laid such a rich, diverse and intersting foundation that I honestly can't wait to see what happens next.
I honestly think with time people will have the same experience I did with ME1. They may not like MEA at first, but when a sequel comes (and it will come) it will make them look back at this game in a new light.
