How it uses lines to connect where you are to where you want to go on the map.
In the trilogy, we used Mass Relays to jump from system to system. Each Relay connects to one or more other Relays, but not all of them, so those lines made sense.
Why do they appear in this map?
We use FTL (Faster Than Light) on the Tempest to travel from star to star. We go from point A to point B. Not A to B to C. No jumping to other stars in the process.
Those connection lines don't need to be there and it irks me that BioWare left them in.

Yep, you are right. They make no sense. The Tempest even has an ODSY drive, so even drive discharge doesn't count.
That said, it's just a representation. The lines and relays in ME1/2/3 didn't quite make sense either, when you really look at the lore. At least in ME2/3 we always fly into the same relay representation in a system, to go to another cluster. In the books/codex, it tells us that there are different types of relays, main ones that have only one partner and connect very distant points and secondary relays that can turn, connect to different partner relays and send you shorter distances in a more versatile manner. That's not represented on the map though, since it's just a UI to tell Joker where yo steer the ship (which is why the little toy ship interface in ME2/3 bugged the crap out of me).
At least this GM feels more like we are navigating again, rather than pushing the ship around.

My bigger issue with the cluster map is the time it takes to travel, and it's not the loading screens. If you're on EOS and want to go to the Nexus, these are the steps you have to take and what you experience:
1) Choose to board the Tempest and leave the planet. 2) Click the Galaxy Map on the Tempest. 3) Zoom out of the planet. 4) Zoom out of the system. 5) Choose a new system and fly to it. 6) Upon arrival, the screen zooms in on the star, and then zooms out. 7) Choose the new planet and fly to it. 8) Upon arrival, zoom in on the planet, then zoom out. 9) Choose to land on the Nexus. 10) Watch cut scene.
On average, this takes about (or a little over) two minutes. It just feels like this could and should be streamlined a bit. It makes wanting to travel anywhere rather irritating and monotonous. I wish that if I wanted to fly to the Nexus I could just choose it rather than going through all the unnecessary loopholes.
