Saw many posts here saying AA or Vanguards can just stand in front of Hydra and punch him to death.
However, every time I tried I got grabbed and insta-kill.
Am I missing something?

Backpedal when it goes for the grab. It's actually very easy to see coming. Also that rank six evo in Barrier where your shields fully regen when knocked down to low health saves you from it. It's pretty absurd.

I don't think that grab sync kills since I can revive myself every time it happened me. Sometimes, off-host, there seems to be a lag and there is no wind up motion when it does the grab. It's standing still while I punch it and then it suddenly becomees grab move even though it was motionless 1 second before.

His grab takes like 3 seconds to actually hit you... move.
And if he does grab you it's not actually a sync kill just lots of damage.
