Hm, shockwave is underwhelming in MEA, but i don't think it is because of its range. Short range was always a defining factor. What made it underwhelming in ME2 was that it didn't affect protected enemies. ME3 Shockwave was actually the best detonator in the game, with a +65% combo damage bonus and manageable short cooldown. The best biotic power currently seems to be backlash, or lance w.r.t. direct damage. Apparently it has a hidden -50% damage to detonations, or at least it did at the start of multiplayer. This is interesting: It still has the .5 multiplier to combo damage and force. And as far as I can tell, shockwave is the only power that has that. Every other detonator (even guddamn Energy drain! ) does the full 1.0 * combo damage, with throw also having a +combo dmg evolution. I wonder what the thought process behind this was. I currently use shockwave in combination with annihilation and concshot. I found that its main grace is that it can hit targets behind cover, which negates the drawback of its short range/duration. However, its direct damage is also not that high. In conjunction with rank6 the armour bonus, it does barely noticeable damage against Rylkors and larger. Its force is relatively high, but i don't think shielded or armoured enemies can be staggered in MEA. So shockwave seems to be intended as a sort of mook crowd control, as in ME2 (also fits with the lift evo). If I may hijack this thread a bit: I wonder, what would you people change to make shockwave good again? Personally I feel that the combo multiplier should be somewhere between 1.2 and 1.3, so that it is at least a better detonator than most alternatives. I don't think upping its damage or force would change much, but maybe lowering the base cooldown would. Then again, that could get overpowered in conjunction with the higher combo bonus.

In previous entries in the series, Shockwave was underwhelming because its range was so short. Do people like it in MEA? How do you think it compares to Lance or Annhilation? What is your favorite power for biotic damage? Shockwave doesn't compare well at all with those two skills. All three are different, but Annihilationu and Lance are very good. Shockwave is outclassed in nearly every way by another skill. For "caster style" characters, Combo Damage is king. Anything that allows you to reliably prime and detonate is good. The crowd control aspect of Singularity and Pull are also good. There are numerous builds you could employ. For raw damage, though, Annihilation is helpful. It creates a radius in which damage is greatly amplified. Lance can be made into an at-will/cooldown-free detonator. Throw can both prime and detonate. Charge is as brokenly good as it was in ME3. The most destructively powerful biotic build I've seen is Vanguard [Charge/Annihilation/Energy Drain]. That build creates a cycle of combos, weapon damage and invulnerability that destroys any semblance of challenge. Ditching Charge and swapping in Lance, Throw or something similar could at least keep things interesting. I'm assuming that you're looking for Combo Damage builds when I give the following advice. Look for skills that both prime and detonate. These include Throw, Incinerate and Energy Drain, off the top of my head. Such skills give incredible versatility. Paired with the right passive Tech skill evolutions, Energy Drain is likely the strongest skill in the game. Gear also plays a part. Craft weapons and armor that supplements your playstyle. Combo damage is king for casters, so build some of that into your armor. A good melee weapon loaded with Kinetic Coils boosts all of your weapon damage, not just melee. Look for synergies like these to fully develop your build. I can talk about game mechanics, builds and gear all day. This game has such a fun assortment of skills and gear with which to tinker. If you want more specific input, just tell me what type of playstyle you're looking to achieve. It's hard to build a bad character in MEA; but you can build an amazing character with just a bit of tinkering and tuning to perfection.

It probably helps to think about your preferred weapon use too. If you like sniping, Annihilation won't do much for you.
I was really underwhelmed with Singularity/Shockwave together; not quite sure why. I eventually ended up mostly running with Throw/Singularity/Lance on that character, or swapping Remnant VI in for Lance. (Keeping throw because it'll detonate targets that I might miss with Lance)

Another fun fact about Shockwave: The rank 6 anti armour bonus is only applied against shields. Scratch that, read the bools wrong. PB's shockwave without the anti shield evo gets that bonus against shields. If I understood this right this time, it's still wrong though...

I personally wouldn't use shockwave for damage. It's much better suited for being a godly detonator that it is against multiple enemies. God forbid if you have combo radius augmentations you'll have some serious collateral damage, if you have for example multiple enemies primed by singularity, flamer or even cryo beam.
Probably one of the best detonators or if not the best, besides something like biotic charge, although they're both good in their right.
Biotic charge: Detonate multiple enemies within its radius Can restore shields Insanely low cooldown with shock trooper evo Buggy targeting sometimes even though Ryder is clearly in valid range of a target
Shockwave: Detonates multiple enemies, that are more spread out Passes through walls Has no targeting issues unlike biotic charge Longer cooldown Spec for radius in containment and choose the reach evo in shockwave to make it even better.
